SMiLE, I haven't read your article yet, but when I do, I will edit this post.  The reason I am commenting now is to ask: Zenobi, I thought the documentary stopped at 1974?  (I haven't had a chance to watch it yet.)

Yes, it technically ends at 1974, but REALLY ends at 1967. That is the reason I said "practically".

I plan on doing the entire catalog plus Brian's solo work.

I am kind of torn about what album I am going to review next. I could do SMiLE since it was recorded next but I am planning to cover both TSS and BWPS in it so it will be a major challenge to write or should I just skip to Smiley Smile and do SMiLE later?

I enjoyed this! This is such a minor thing, but I can solve the mystery for you of why Van Dyke Parks agreed to play the accordion on Kokomo--my understanding is that he was actually hired to do the steel band arrangement, which he was kind of a go-to guy for in LA at the time. In the 80s, he was focused on putting his kids through college (his words, I think, though I can't remember where I read them), and doing lots of TV and movie work... which is how you get Van Dyke Parks writing the songs for The Brave Little Toaster right around that time, for example.

I am probably going to do Smiley Smile next. I would like to do SMiLE but that will be a more daunting and labor intensive thing to write. So I will probably handle that closer to when it actually came out not when it was supposed to.

I like the idea of uncomplicated essays on each album for those just starting down the Beach Boys trail. Keep up the good work!
