Title: The legendary R&R already exists (at least potentially)
Post by: Zenobi on December 13, 2021, 07:33:08 AM
Rock and Roll Has Got a Hold On Me

Side A:
Night Bloomin' Jasmine (bonus track from BW88, 2000 edition)
Walkin' the Line (from "Timeline" section of Brian Wilson site)
The Spirit of Rock and Roll (ditto)
Let's Do It Again (ditto)
Sunshine (ditto)
I'm Broke (LPR soundtrack)

Side B:
I'm Goin' Home (LPR soundtrack)
Slightly American Music (ditto)
Desert Drive (GIOMH)
It's OK (LPR soundtrack)
Honeycomb (ditto)
Rock and Roll Has Got a Hold On Me (ditto)

Bonus tracks:
Listen To Me
Country Feelin'
Water Builds Up
Proud Mary

That's it. No track from physically released albums (except Desert Drive and maybe Night Bloomin' Jasmine), no Joe Thomas production or any kind of overproduction, no "guest stars" (hooray!), little or no autotune. For four songs I choose the (IMHO) vastly better "demo" tracks listenable in the BW site over the "complete" versions. I can't do the same for Desert Drive because the demo has no vocals.

I think the way Brian uses the "Shortenin' Bread" riff is a treatise on the art of variation in music, like the way he used the "Bicycle Rider" riff in SMiLE. He takes a small seed and makes it bloom into a whole soundscape.

I'd argue that you could also include Brian's Buddy Holly cover "Listen to Me" somewhere on this tracklist, though it seems difficult to find it anywhere online.

Agreed! And edited. :)
