Well his name is Brian, and he is the man. At least he's not lying.  :)

I don't care what anyone says. I love it. I think it's hilarious--one of my favorite moments on an otherwise awful Sweet Insanity album. At least it lacks those god-awful therapy lyrics.

And I'm sure its lyrics, too, were written by Gene Landy.  It creeps me out, personally.  But it is funny if you can get past the creepiness.

Oh, I don't doubt that at all. But at least they weren't about people saying "hey brian, you're looking cool" and whatever other trash is on S.I.

To be correct: "man you're looking cool" is on "Imagination". "Brian, you've come a long long way" is from SI

I know. But your precision is certainly appreciated. Really. It is.

Really a bad song. I am glad SI never came out.

"Smart Girls" is a fucking comedy masterpiece, in the same spirit of "I'm Bugged At My Ol' Man" or "Vega-Tables". Brian often stated that he can't stand rap-music. And here makes fun at it AND at the fact that he can't rap. I think it's brilliant...

... unless it was meant to be serious.  :-\

Exactly.  This song works as a parody.  If done right, the music video for this could be very funny.

You people know that "S____  G____" never happened, right?

It was the last phase of the CIA mind-control experiment.

Repeat:

"S____ G____" never happened.

OK, I repeat

"S____ G____" never happened.

It's the "B_____ H___ O_ T__ R_______" of Brian's solo career

I just heard "Smart Girls" for the first time last night. I thought it was great. I`ve never heard so much energy in Brian`s voice, and it was fall down funny. Reminded me (as some others have said) of his humorous songs like "Vega-Tables" or "Johnny Carson".

I also heard "The Spirit of Rock 'n Roll", the duet version with Bob Dylan. I love Brian and Bob, but I didn`t really care much for this duet. They sounded pretty mismatched. (And this is not to knock Bob`s voice, which I love. I thought "Modern Times" was great.)

For SOR`nR, I much preferred the Beach Boys version that you can see a clip of on Youtube, the one where they are performing in Hawaii on some `80`s TV special.

If anyone can tell me where I can hear the rest of SI, please email me. The only other song I`ve heard from it was "Rainbow Eyes". The version I heard was labeled as Brian having recorded the song with Dennis (??) although I`m pretty sure that`s incorrect. (On the version I heard, he used the lyrics "sweet insanity" and a few others which were updated on "Gettin` In Over My Head".)

Basically, I think they should just release SI for collectors. There might be a few bad tracks on there. Who cares if they are interesting? I think Brian`s music can be both breathtakingly beautiful and also downright fun and funny. I like it ALL.

Smart Girls to me sounds like Gene Landy forcing Brian to try to be hip.  Basically, he insults every great love song Brian ever wrote, and has Brian do it himself.  Towards the end, you can almost hear Brian's spirit break in half when he gets down to "SMART GIRLS ARE AWEEEESOME, DUDE!!!!". It sounds to me as if a mentally ill man is being forced to do something against his will.

I have not been deeply into the BBs until the last few years, so I don't know the complete backstory of events with Landy or the SI album.

If you are right about this, that's very unfortunate.

I know one thing: I saw the "Summer of Love" video for the first time tonight and Brian definitely looks unhappy to me in that one. It seems strange he would even be in that video since he apparently didn't have anything to do with the song.

I think I need to read more about Brian's history to really comment intelligently on this.

His only connection with the whole album was that he co-wrote one of the tracks 31 years previously.  :o

I hate the version of Smart Girls with the recordings of the BB songs spliced in.  BUt there is another version - on the Vigatones Outtakes disc, in case anyone is looking - where all those song tidbits were re-recorded for the song, in the context of the song, and it works MUCH better.  It's a lot more organic sounding, and it sounds whole and complete.  Which cannot be said of the other, more commonly-heard version.

"Gimme a gal who teaches school, who's not afraid to break the rules!"

Nothing wrong with that!

So bad it's really bad.  I find it basically unlistenable.  Not even slightly funny even when taken as a parody.
