I think this is the first time any of the guys have been referred to by name in a Dylan tune...unless he’s got one still on the cab discussing Mike’s Rock’n’roll Hall of Fame remarks....

Apparently, this mention refers to Carl doing backing vocals for the Warren Zevon song "Desperados Under the Eaves", which includes the line "Look away down Gower Avenue"".

Not as audible as on Chug-a-Lug or the new Dylan song, but Bruce mentions "Carl Wilson" during Mike's "tried Al Jardine" lead on the Live in London version of Barbara Ann.

Does anyone have any opinions as to why Dylan named Carl Wilson in particular in reference to Desperadoes Under the Eaves? Why not Warren Zevon, or any of the other people who sang background vocals on that song?

Even though his own voice is ragged beyond repair, i'm sure he enjoys those who do have beautiful voices.

I'm sure Dylan actually is enjoying the Boys' music. Not too long ago someone mentioned on this board that Dylan played "Goin' on" suring a rehearsal or soundchek in the early 80s, so he probably was following their releases to a degree.

It's been years and years ago and I'm not sure where I read it - maybe on the Dennis Wilson Dreamer messageboard ??? - but didn't Dylan once refer to the Beach Boys as "Al Jardine's band"? That got stuck in my mind. But maybe someone was making a joke and I just didn't understand. Haven't heard that story since then either.

I assumed he was just referencing Carl's involvement singing background vocals on that particular song. As far as I know Dylan has never been derogatory when it comes to the Beach Boys. Their interactions have been limited but Dylan has said some complimentary things about them in the past and then of course there was that time he recorded a song with Brian...

Exactly. Hence my question of why he mentioned Carl Wilson instead of Warren Zevon or any of the other people who sang backup on that song. "Murder Most Foul" contains such a large list of musicians that I suppose we'll never truly know why.

The song I Love My Car by Belle & Sebastian has a line about 'I love my Carl' along with Brian, Dennis and Al, and the kiss-off 'I could even find it in my heart to love Mike Love'.

Dyan is, of course, a very talented writer. But the man's voice makes a yowling tomcat sound like a Mama Cass ballad in comparison. And he could not have picked a more beautiful voice to enjoy than that of Carl Wilson.
