What do you like besides Beach Boys/Brian Wilson? Or is that it so far? Or, what do you not like? Title: Re: Music Reccomendations Post by: Don't Back Down on January 11, 2006, 10:54:41 AM trumpet_sounds: I'm pretty much open to any thing. I just want to dive deeper into stuff like blues, classic rock 'n roll (50's, 60's, etc.). I have some jazz collections of Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, The Dorseys, that type of stuff. I'd also like to get into more piano music, whether rock 'n roll piano, blues piano, ragtime piano, etc. etc. I'd like to look into some Queen stuff too, listened to Bohemian Rhapsody (sp?) again the other day and it's great. So stuff like what I just mentioned. Thanks!
Harmolodic: Thanks man! I'll look into those Title: Re: Music Reccomendations Post by: GP1138 on January 11, 2006, 11:00:17 AM OMP, the entire "Night at the Opera" LP is wonderful.
Title: Re: Music Reccomendations Post by: harmolodic on January 11, 2006, 11:10:54 AM Harmolodic: Thanks man! I'll look into those No problem -- and if you're particularly into piano, grab that disc by the Bad Plus immediately! They are hands down the most exciting new jazz piano trio out there. Title: Re: Music Reccomendations Post by: the captain on January 11, 2006, 12:35:27 PM Some (but not all) of the albums I consider essential, barring those already listed (I think, although I can't guarantee 0 duplication):
Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool, Miles Ahead, A Kind Of Blue, Sketches of Spain, Miles Smiles, In a Silent Way, Filies de Kilimanjaro, Bitches Brew (then everything else). Thelonius Monk: anything. Velvet Underground: The Velvet Underground and Nico, White Light/White Heat, The Velvet Underground, Loaded (Fully Loaded Edition) and VU. Lou Reed: Transformer (and the aforementioned Berlin) The Beatles: everything Tom Waits: Blue Valentine, Rain Dogs, Bone Machine, Black Rider, Alice, Blood Money Captain Beefheart: Safe as Milk, Strictly Personal, troutmaskreplica Simon & Garfunkel: Bookends, Bridge Over Troubled Water Bob Dylan: Bringing it All Back Home, Highway 61 Revisited, Blonde on Blonde, John Wesley Harding, Basement Tapes, Blood on the Tracks, Love and Theft Leonard Cohen: Songs, Songs of Love and Hate Randy Newman: the first several albums Bruce Springsteen: pretty much everything through the mid-80s, anyway, if not more. Led Zeppelin: the entire catalogue Queen: Queen II through The Game Get it? This can go on forever. A little context would help, as I have a LOT more. It is just too tough to narrow this down. Title: Re: Music Reccomendations Post by: Chris D. on January 11, 2006, 12:52:33 PM One thing I would add -- if you're looking into a new band, look at their most praised and most hated albums to get a sense of what they're about. Often the most hated albums are as good as the "essential" ones.

Often the most hated albums are as good as the "essential" ones. I can see it now -- a thread called "Summer In Paradise is as good as Pet Sounds and Smile -- Deal With It!" ;D Ian, only those artists? Essential all, but I would have to add in a few like Village Green I would think... Get those, dude!" I prefer to let everyone else state the obvious. To my ears, everything I love about music can be boiled down to the things I mentioned. They found a box marked Carnegie Hall 1957......lo and behold it was a unreleased tape of the early and late show of these two giant's. Very Rare stuff and the Quality is UNBELIEVABLE !!

Not the easiest thing to find. Heatwave -- "The Best Of..." Rod Temperton, who wrote many tunes for that freak MJ, is the main writer. Title: Re: Music Reccomendations Post by: hrtshpdbox on January 12, 2006, 10:42:18 AM Lou Reed -- Berlin (have to second this one)>
Sure, because it's such an uplifting collection of tunes. And also because you can get it from the cut-out bins for a dollar-sixty-nine (oh, not anymore, sure, but you could at one time, but if you get a time machine don't go back and buy like 20 copies as an investment, because your girlfriend will just forget to pay the storage bill when you're out of town and you'll lose them, and everything else you own, you miserable sod - at least if you're like me, or actually are me, in which case you have my sympathies, and where the hell is my heart-shaped billboard icon anyway, dammit, and why is it 55 degrees in January, it was very nice candlelight and Dubonnet on ice). Title: Re: Music Reccomendations Post by: harmolodic on January 12, 2006, 11:14:23 AM Good to see you back!
And you won't hear me questioning 55 degrees (or 59 in my case) in January. Oh, how I don't miss the northeast... Title: Re: Music Reccomendations Post by: b.dfzo on January 12, 2006, 11:25:30 AM Art Tatum, "20th Century Piano Genius".

Title: Re: Music Reccomendations Post by: cabinessence on January 12, 2006, 01:55:24 PM For piano and keyboards, I recommend Bowie's Aladdin Sane: Mike Garson is a superb, fearless soloist without an ounce of prog-rock bloat
He reminds me a lot of Bernie Worrell in his P-Funk appearances of the same era (hard to isolate a single record) Title: Re: Music Reccomendations Post by: Domo Arigato on January 12, 2006, 03:10:01 PM Dread Zeppelin - "Un Led ED"
Elvis meets Bob Marley on acid. Robert Plant himself says he loves Dread Zeppelin and that their version of "Your Time Is Gonna Come" is better than Led Zep's. Jimmy Page kicked Carl Jah in the shins. Bob Dylan "almost" danced to their music in Oslo, Norway. David Crosby called Dread Zeppelin, "some weird merda". Dave Stewart of The Eurythmics let them record all of their classic "Un Led ED" in his home studio in Encino, CA while Jeff Lynne played tennis on the grounds. Jerry Garcia called "Un Led ED" the best album of 198.! Julian Cope called "Tour-Telvis: A Bad Trip" psychedelic. But Lionel Richie was apalled that DZ wanted to do his song, "Brick House (of The Holy!)" -hey, he's a serious art-tiste. President Bill Clinton, was excited to shake the hands of producer Jah Paul Jo and bassist Butt-Boy. Dude, this weather is perfect for winter here. Remember when it was almost 70 for a week last year in December? Got me high. When I go to see my girlfriend I drive by ur Capitol Beltway boi and often think of your lost Berlinz. Will you change your name to Hllrbckgirl?
