Title: Arctic Monkeys
Post by: Rerun on August 19, 2006, 01:20:14 PM
Okay, I'm probably behind everybody, but I finally went out and picked up their album.  After reading all the hype and stuff, it just turned me off.  It turned me off greater to know that their influences only go back so far as the Strokes/White Stripes/Libertines, etc.  Still, I haven't picked up much lately and broke down.

Anyway, I really do like the album.  There's not very many melodies, and when they exist, its primarily on some of the choruses and on the slower songs.  It was unexpected for me to hear an album primarily grounded in rhythms and riffs like that.  To me, it's very Police-y with all of its reggae rhythms, but again, without the catchiness melodically.  Still, it just has this energy that I love and have been listening to it non-stop since Thursday.

Not sure what more they'd have to offer, but has anybody else heard this?

I admit I'm not much of a fan of it. I've heard a small handful of songs, and while I've bopped my head to it now and then, that small handful is enough for me.

I like their version of "Baby, I'm Yours" on their latest single - but it's such a good song anyway... Just got the album - jury is still out - I like the way their vocals are recorded though, generally every lyric can be heard clearly......

They're an acquired taste, it took me a few listens to really form an opinion about them, what I heard I liked.
