To quote Brian "you know I hate to be a downer . . . ". but I don't think a medal of freedom is the most appropriate honor for The Beach Boys.  An award in the musical realm would be better I think.

Excellent question.  The answer is yes, but the medals would be awarded to each individual member.  Recent example would be Bill & Melinda Gates for their work with the Gates Foundation.  Eight members of the Apollo 13 Mission Operations Team were recipients in 1970.

I think the Kennedy Center Honors is an appropriate item to shoot for, and Brian got it in 2007.
