With the explosion of high-quality unreleased songs found on the Sunshine Tomorrow compilation, including several names that had been floating around for awhile but never bootlegged like "Game of Love" and "Honey Get Home", I was curious to see if we can come up with a basic idea for what tracks we can hope will finally be unleashed upon our ears in future rarity compilations. This is all assuming that Brother Records continues their yearly release cycle of copyright extension albums, which they show no sign of slowing down with.

Of course, we have no way of knowing if some of these are even releasable at all, but some of them are worth speculating on I think.

I’ve also made notes on the various copyright extension releases we’ve gotten over the years. These grey market digital drops have been done due to the European copyright law which dictates that the copyright on certain music recorded 50 years ago will be lost if it isn’t released. To skirt this outcome without spending money on an actual release of unheard music, the rights holders to The Beach Boys music have quietly uploaded yearly archival albums on smaller platforms like bandcamp and then removed them shortly after, technically counting as a “release” with almost no one knowing it even happened. This is obviously a heinous practice because these are put out with no mixing or care put into them, and for the 1971 dump, all songs included were only half of the original file. Not the entire track, just half of it, which meant butchering the second album recorded by The Flame. This practice seems to have no end in sight, so stay tuned for any news on these as they do contain worthwhile music but can be very hard to find.

And a quick guide to shortened terms I used to save myself some time:

1967 - SMiLE, Smiley Smile, Lei'd In Hawaii, Wild Honey era

- "Sunflower Maiden": Brian and Van Dyke Parks song written for Three Dog Night. Apparently lost

- Lei'd In Hawaii studio rehearsal sessions; "Surfin'", "God Only Knows", "Good Vibrations", "California Girls", "Surfer Girl": Brian running through some of the songs they would play live on an organ with his faint vocals heard in the background. Not extremely necessary, but I certainly enjoy putting them on sometimes, if not just to hear Brian play all of "Good Vibrations" on an organ

- backing tracks to; "Gettin' Hungry", "She's Goin' Bald" (released with backing vocals instead of just the track), "Wind Chimes" (Smiley version), "Vegetables" (Smiley version): booted

- SMiLE backing tracks: booted, should have been released years ago


1968 - Friends, 20/20 era

- "Friends" (alternate mix): booted

- "Fig Plucker": Dennis leading some of the group through a tongue-twister about a fig plucker

- booted backing tracks to; "Meant for You", "Wake the World", "We're Together Again"


1969 - Sunflower era

- "Harmony Friends" - name of the soaring vocal-only coda to "Break Away" booted as a standalone 2 minute track, a treat for the ears

- "Slip on Through" (acetate mix): different from the '69 mix on the Feel Flows set

- "(Wouldn't It Be Nice To) Live Again" (demo): anything related to this song must be released

- "America, I Know You" (backing track): unbooted, collaboration with Stephen Kalinich


1970 - Sunflower era

- "Take A Load Off Your Feet, Pete" (original mix), "Tears In the Morning" (original version with different lyrics, as well as the studio backing track), "When Girls Get Together" (original mixes for both the studio version and the instrumental track), "Good Time" (original mix), "It's About Time" (percussion mix with some dazzling bongo playing): booted

- "Carnival": still waiting for the channel-swapping version of this to be released

- Big Sur concert: excellent show booted in good quality

- Fred Vail country album: a country album that was at least somewhat produced by Brian that has not been booted, planned for release in 2025 I guess? Tracks included; "Bethany Ann", "There's Always Something There to Remind Me", "Kittens, Kids & Kites, "Lucky Billy", "Black Man in Georgia", "One Woman Won't Hold Me", "Why Don't You Give Her to Me", "If You're Not Loving, You're Not Living", "All for The Love of A Girl", "Only the Lonely", "Carolina On My  Mind", "My Way of Life", "A Fool Such as I", "You Pass Me By", "I Can't Help It if I'm Still In Love With You"

1970 Copyright Release: essentially this was most of the archival tracks from the Feel Flows boxset but covertly released a year earlier in 2020 so the precious copyright wouldn’t be lost. Interestingly though, the version of “Seasons in the Sun” here is closer to the original mix of the song with full backing vocals, as opposed to the version released on the boxset which Al had remixed to remove some backing vocals


1971 - Surf's Up, Carl & the Passions era

- "4th of July" (alternate version), "H.E.L.P. Is on the Way" (original mix), "Lookin' at Tomorrow" (original mix), "Big Sur" (original mix), "Won't You Tell Me" (original mix): booted

- "Barnyard Blues" (demo): unbooted

- 1971 Friends remakes; "Wake the World", "Be Still" and "Friends": Stanley Shapiro and Tandyn Almer worked with Brian on these rerecordings. Only Brian's lead vocal of "Passing By" with lyrics has been released, the others are assumed to have been lost, especially considering that "Passing By" was sourced from a low-quality backup cassette

- "Follow Me to the Sea": early title for “Before” which has more Dennis vocals than what was released on Feel Flows

1971 Copyright Release - an absolutely brutal way to let the public hear this music. Every song is only half of it’s actual length, they couldn’t even be bothered to release the entirety of each track. Here’s what was put out in an unforgivable form;

- Dennis Wilson solo album sessions (known as Poops or Hubba Hubba); "Sea Cruise", “Just for You”, “Untitled Piano Track” : a full take of “Just for You” has luckily surfaced on youtube

- “Sing Out a Song”: piano demo by David Sandler, not sure if it was meant for the band or not

- The Flame second album: the band consisting of Blondie Chaplin and Ricky, Steve & Brother Fataar that finished a followup album to their first release on Brother Records. None of these tracks are presented in full which is massive insult to how good this music sounds. Tracks are; "Mother Of The Century", "Sigh Baby Sigh", "High Overhead", "Sunny Skies", "Thank Someone", "Seven Sisters", "Have You Ever Been Happy", "Henry's Son", "Sweet Jane", "I'm A Man" (Outtake), "Hello!" (Outtake), "Everybody" (Outtake)


1972 - Carl & the Passions "So Tough", Holland era

- "Fairy Tale Music" (with narration by Brian): a rough piano performance of some of the Fairy Tale from a time Brian was playing music for a reporter

- "Burlesque": Brian and Jack Riely song, may have never been recorded. Jack said in an interview that a line of lyric in it is "Tantalation and hot glowing skin/Sun’s ‘bout to rest"

- "Slow Song": unbooted

- "The Trader" (early mix): booted shorter version found on the Brother Bonus Tracks CD, a rough version of just the first part of the song

- "Cuddle Up" (single mix): rare, but booted

1972 Copyright Release - mercifully these weren’t cut in half for some reason, but still some low quality audio files tossed online:

- “Unknown Dennis Piano Synth Track”
- “City Jim”: various takes of Carl playing a piano demo for what would become “The Trader”, lyrics he sings to it are “City Jim jived the city crowd, and City Jim fooled them all”
- “Ten Years Harmony” (incomplete electric piano take): early version of “Endless Harmony”

- full live sets from their shows in Jamaica, NY and Pasaic, NJ (some of these recordings were recently sweetened in the studio to enhance the performances, some are from the original assembly of the “In Concert” album)


1973

- "River Song" (original mix): booted. Recorded with the Beach Boys, seems the backing track and backing vocals were kept for Dennis' solo version. May have been from ‘74

- "Dr. Tom": unbooted Al song, apparently a reworking of the folk song “Tom Dooley”

- "Pattycake": apparently never recorded, about a gorilla that Brian saw at the Bronx zoo

1973 Copyright Release: just the live show at the Hollywood Palladium on April 20th, 1973


1974 - Caribou Sessions era

- "Honeycomb": unbooted cover recorded during the same session as "It's OK", also featuring Roy Wood of ELO and Wizzard on saxophone and Marilyn on lead vocal

- Carl demos: unbooted Moog and guitar demos

- "Just An Imitation": still hard to tell if a recording of this exists, written by Brian after his father's death

- Caribou sessions; "Good Timin'" (original track and lead vocal as well the instrumental version with more prominent mellotron), "Is This Really Love", "Why Don't You Try Me?": only both versions of "Good Timin'" circulate

- "Child of Winter": unbooted alternate mix with Carl and Dennis lead vocals

- "California Saga" (1974 live version with sitar): booted, might only exist as an audience recording

1974 Copyright Release - some bits here that fans have been waiting years for;
-“Dennis’ Symphony”: the first 2 sections of this are the same as the track “10,000 Years” which is instrumental with some Dennis backing vocals, the 3rd section is similar to the intro of “Friday Night” from his solo album
-“Brian’s Jam”: the first true recording done solely of the famous “Shortenin’ Bread” riff that became a lifelong obsession for Brian
- “String Bass Song”: an early instrumental version of Dennis’ “Rainbows”
- “Happy Birthday Roger McGuinn”: Ricky & Carl produced this elaborate version of the Birthday Song for The Byrds’ Roger McGuinn
- “Long Road”: parts of this demo would become Dennis’ “Cocktails”
- “Dennis Moog and Piano Riff”: early version of “Album Tag Song” done in 4/4
- “Untitled Dennis Demo”: a sweet little recording of Dennis & Audree Wilson wordlessly singing to Dennis’ piano playing
- “Rollin’ Up to Heaven” at last: the actual song in slightly better quality in all it’s profane glory
- “The Battle Hymn of the Republic”: also in slightly better quality in all it’s profane glory


1975 - start of "Brian Is Back" era

- "Come to the Sunshine": Brian's cover of a Van Dyke Parks song, supposed to be lost

- "Carl's Song": booted instrumental of what would become “Where We Are (It Could Be Anything)”

- "In the Back of My Mind" (piano demo): still unavailable for streaming for whatever reason, was a bonus track for the Target release of No Pier Pressure I believe. An emotional and revealing version with altered lyrics by Brian and features him prominently switching between his more coarse 15 Big Ones voice with the soaring falsetto from his younger voice

- "Rainbows" (early version), “Slow Blues”: unbooted

- “Grateful We Are for Little Children” - unbooted song by Brian and Stephen Kalinich that would later turn into “Saturday Morning in the City”

- Beachago live album: recording from the Beach Boys hugely popular tour with Chicago


1976 - 15 Big Ones, Love You era

- Love You demos: recording of Brian playing for the band a selection of new songs he had written on the piano. The following were released in high quality on the Timeline from Brian’s website; “Airplane”, “I’ll Bet He’s Nice”, “Little Children”, “Love Is a Woman”, “Mona”
and the rest have been bootlegged in varying quality over the years; “That Special Feeling”, “Let’s Put Our Hearts Together”, “It’s Over Now”, “Still I Dream of It” (higher quality version than what was released on Brian’s I Just Wasn’t Made for These Times soundtrack)

 - "Michael Row the Boat Ashore", "Mony Mony", "Rock & Roll Music" ("Hot" mix), "Come Go With Me" (original mix), "Ruby Baby", "Short Skirts" (versions with & without backing vocals), "Running Bear", "10,000 Years" (instrumental), "On Broadway", "Sea Cruise", "We Gotta Groove" (versions with & without lead vocal), "Marilyn Rovell", "Lazy Lizzie", "Hey There Momma", "Let Us Go On This Way" (a capella backing vocals): booted

- "Don't Fight the Sea": unbooted, Al later rerecorded this and then worked on it for the next few decades, adding Carl & Brian in the late 80's and Mike in the 2000's

- unbooted Dennis songs; - "10,000 Years” (another take on the instrumental track?), "Life Symphony" (may be “Dennis’ Symphony” which was released on the shady 1974 copyright extension release), "Flowers Come In the Spring" (might be a remake of "Fallin' In Love"), "I Didn't Mean to Make You Worry", "Taking Off", "2,000 Years Ago" (possibly just a misnamed "10,000 Years Ago"), "String Thing 2", "Long String Song" (lotta "String" songs from Dennis around this time)

- "It's Like Heaven": booted. Recorded with Rocky Pamplin and Marilyn on vocals, I assume it predates the American Spring version

- "Just Once In My Life" (backing track): one of the absolute highlights of all bootlegs I've heard

- "Let's Dance", "Secret Love", and "Working in the Coal Mine": unheard covers

- "Lady Lynda" (original version): more superior version in my mind, lacks the classical music intro and has different instrumentation. Recorded for the band Celebration so may not be eligible as a Beach Boy release

- "That Same Song": performance with a church choir from the It's OK special for TV

- Anaheim concert: apparently polished with overdubs


1977 - Love You, Adult/Child, Pacific Ocean Blue, M.I.U. era

- "The Night Was So Young" (early mix), "Love Is A Woman" (early mix with Al lead vocal), "Johnny Carson" (early mix with guitar intro), "Roller Skating Child" (early mix with different vocals), "I'll Bet He's Nice" (early mix), "Solar System" (early mix with no backing vocals), "Clangin'", "11th Bar Blues": all on the Brothers Bonus Tracks CD

- "Honkin' Down the Highway" (alternate version): booted version with Billy Hinsche on lead vocal and a synth solo

- "Solar System" (backing track): a rare find, but what a knockout track

- "Gimme Some Lovin'", “Number One” (Mike song about a lonely rock star before its Christmas rewrite turned it into “Alone on Christmas Day”): unbooted

- "Mike Come Back to L.A.": any edit or rough version would be welcome, very fun and energetic track

- "How's About A Little Bit of Your Sweet Lovin'?", "Go and Get That Girl", "Beach Burlesque", "Egypt": only “Beach Burlesque” is unbooted, “Egypt” was released on the Made in California boxset as “Why” but this might be a different version?

- Merry Christmas From The Beach Boys sessions; "Christmas Medley" (a medley of Christmas songs with the band and their children singing “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus”, "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen", "O Come All Ye Faithful", "Hark The Herald Angels Sing", and "We Wish You A Merry Christmas"), "Santa Is on His Way" (rerecording of "H.E.L.P. Is on the Way"), "Alone on Christmas Day", "Sad, Sad Christmas": no boot has "Sad, Sad Christmas", but it's the original version of "Sad, Sad Summer" so it probably isn't too different from that

- "Pacific Ocean Blue" (backing track): booted

- rehearsals for Dennis Wilson solo tour: according to Ed Roach, there is some fantastic stuff here that some people have heard. Seems like it absolutely deserves uncovering, features Carl and a full band running through songs from his recently released solo album


1978 - M.I.U., Bambu, L.A. era

- "Rubles", "Ride Arabian, Ride": unbooted Al songs

- "Santa Ana Winds" (original mix): booted Brian song with different lyrics, grander instrumentation, and lacking the very unnecessary spoken word intro. Also exists an alternate mix with more instrumentation and double-tracked vocals. Al later revamped this for KTSA

- "Lookin' Down the Coast/Monterey": great work by Al on this one, meant to be a trilogy along with “Santa Ana Winds”

- "I'm Begging You Please": booted Brian demo, his voice is a bit rough reaching for the falsetto but still an excellent song with the kind of mature lyrics I wish Brian wrote more of

- "Where We Are (It Could Be Anything)": early version of a Carl song

- "California Feelin'" (original mix): booted mix with more synthy and without Brian vocals

- "Drip Drop": booted cover by Brian, although maybe not worth release for how off Brian sounds

- "Calendar Girl": booted cover with Mike on lead vocal with Brian singing the intro and providing backing vocals

- "I Really Love You": early version of a Brian song with him singing lead, a bit rough but his voice is smoother compared to a lot of 15BO and Love You. A rare find, along with its backing track

- "Basketball Rock", "Bowling", “There’s a Feeling Through the Air”: unbooted Brian, first 2 are instrumentals

- booted outtakes from Bambu; "Constant Companion" (extended alternate mix without backing vocals), "Baby Blue" (rough mix with no Dennis vocal) "Time for Bed" (backing track), "He's A Bum" (backing track), "Wild Situation" (backing track with backing vocals), "Love Surrounds Me" (backing track), "All Alone" (demo mix)

1979 - L.A., Keepin' the Summer Alive era

- "Little Girl", "Jamaica Farewell", "Stranded In the Jungle", "Johnny B. Goode" (two versions exist, one with Dennis on drums and a later one with Bruce producing) "Smokey Places": covers recorded with Brian involvement, only the first song is booted in unfinished form which would then be strangely finished into an original song "Sunshine" on KTSA

- “I’ll Always Love You”: Carl’s cover of the Barry Mann song

- “Surfer Suzie”: unbooted song written by touring guitarist Ed Carter

- “School Days” (single mix), “Da Doo Ron Ron” (original mix)

- "Oh Darlin'": unbooted earlier attempt on the KTSA song with Dennis drumming

- "Boys and Girls": unbooted Brian song, one from the KTSA sessions produced by Bruce and a remake from 1980 produced by Brian. Both may not have vocals


1980 - Keepin' the Summer Alive era

- "Oh Darlin'" (original version): features Brian on lead vocal with prominent Carl vocals, alternate lyrics, and a much less busy backing track, I prefer this one 1000x more than the studio version with Bruce's overblown production

- "Goin' On" (original backing track): neat version with some charged-up drum solos not in the studio version

- "Be My Baby", "River Deep, Mountain High", "Smokey Places", "Greenback Dollar": covers with Brian involvement. Only the first two are booted

- "My Solution" and "Shortenin' Bread": booted instrumentals by Brian, meant to be part of a track called "Song Within a Song" with narration from Brian that’s unbooted

- "Can't Wait Too Long" (1980 remake): unbooted. Overdubs were attempted by the group

- "Fly", "Up Again", "Candlesticks", “Starbaby”, How’s About It”, “Return” (track), “Roller Skating Child” (remake): unbooted

- "I'm a Man": unbooted Brian song

- "Bucks": unbooted Mike song

- Dennis Wilson and Christie McVie sessions: unknown what these were like


1981

- "Stevie": Brian/Dennis collaboration, written by Brian with production by Dennis and Garby Leon. Baffling why it hasn't been released, sounds so damn good and finished enough to put out there

- "I Ran (All the Way Home)": unbooted

- "Sweetie": unbooted studio version with Al, Mike and Brian taking turns on lead vocal


1982

- Cocaine Sessions material: "Why Don't You Tell Me Why (You've Been Good to Me)", "I Feel So Fine", "Oh Lord", "City Blues", "Heroes and Villains", "I Said A Prayer" (early demo of "This Isn't Love"): been circulating for many many years, being repeatedly taken off Youtube whenever it is discovered there

- "Cry Like a Baby" and two other untitled songs: ubooted Brian songs

- "Labor Day": reported to be Dennis' final studio recording, unheard but hopefully out there


1983

- "California Dreamin'" (alternate version): earlier attempt with Mike on lead

- Brian and Carl sessions: unbooted. Unknown what these were like, need to get my hands on this

- Carl demo sessions: unbooted

- "Black Widow" (piano demo), "The First Time" (demo mix): booted

- "It's Just a Matter of Time": a live version with Brian on lead vocals, he sounds better here than he does on the '85 album


1984 - The Beach Boys (self-titled album) era

- "Getcha Back" (alternate extended mix), "She Believes In Love Again" (alternate mix), "California Calling" (Al lead vocal): booted

- "Down By the Pier", "And I Always Will", "At the Hop": covers, only "At the Hop" is booted, and it might be better off kept in the vault

- "Buzz, Buzz, Buzz": unbooted live cover

- "Water Builds Up": unbooted. A song Brian later recorded on his own for the Sweet Insanity album


1986 - Wilson Project era

- "Sweetie", "Rings", "Walking on Water", "Don't Let Her Know She's an Angel": booted piano demos by Brian

- "Rock and Roll to the Rescue" (alternate extended mix): not available for streaming, don't think the original version is either

- "Wouldn't That Be Cool": a Brian song attempted during sessions for Made in U.S.A. with a co-lead vocal from Terry Melcher

- Wilson Project recordings: Brian's first serious work on a solo album done with Gary Usher and under the watchful eye of Dr. Landy. Previously talked about in one of the Sunshine Tomorrow topics. "Good News" was deemed unreleasable, and no tapes for "Good Time Mama" exist (and has been theorized to have just been a working title for the last section of "She's Goin' Bald".

"New Song" actually HAS been booted, commonly referred to as "Indian Wisdom", "Spanish Guitar Instrumental", "Margarita", etc.

That's exactly what it is. A run-through take of "Good Time" transitioned into a very loose, incomplete jam of "You Never Give Me Your Money".

"Gimme Some Lovin'" is lost. Hard to say if "Is Jack Rieley Superman" was even recorded, or it was even its own song as opposed to a temporary name given to another W.I.P. track. "Spark in the Dark" has no relation to "Funky Pretty". Apparently, it's an instrumental featuring a riff later heard in Brian's "Chain Reaction of Love".

I think there should be a Brian is Back box set. Including 15 Big Ones/Love You albums and sessions. As well as unreleased material from that period. As well as an official release of Adult Child. Include maybe a DVD of highlights of Brian on the road and interviews from 76-78ish. I don't know if there would be any money in something like this, but I would pay $100 for it!

Added they should throw in a restoration of Brian is Back, and some of the live performances from the era.  I would also pay $100 for it if not more...

Why not a December download of the 1966-67 Smile tracks that were left off the box?  Plus a stereo mix of Smile.  They could also include more Smiley Smile, Wild Honey and live material that didn't fit on Sunshine Tomorrow.

That would make me very sad personally.  Maybe BW can rerecord it or something...  :(

Have updated the list up to 1981, what seems like the last year of the band's 20 year streak of recording new material with some regularity until the '85 album sessions. There is a LOT to go through here, sorry if it's too unwieldy in it's detail. Good to have a conjoined list of all this wonderful and mysterious music, reading some highlights here gets me really excited for the future of this group, seems like we're definitely gonna be seeing this stuff start to trickle out soon enough. Let me know if I'm missing anything/gotten anything wrong, there's a lot to go through.

I'm A Man Is Not A Cover. Despite what Bellagio and Wikipedia says, Brian wrote the song

You forgot "Surfer Suzie" from the KTSA era. That's one that I really wanna hear, apparently it's supposed to be surprisingly good!

Carl's Where We Are is a fantastic song.

One of my biggest regrets from visiting John Hanlon & Jon Stebbins in the studio for the mixing of Bambu was not having time to listen to the rehearsal tapes...  (Sadly, I do seem to recall that none of these recordings include DW vocals).  However, I was present for many of these rehearsals, (sometimes with Dennis, sometimes just wandering in to visit the band and listen by myself), and they were extraordinary!
The rehearsals took place in the back room of Brother, (in what was normally the room where the equipment was stored, and originally was rented to house the studio's return from the Netherlands), and I can't recall what format they were recorded on, (Jon, a little help here), but they were a portent of how monumental these shows were going to be!  Ah, Dennis, if only...

I've never looked up the intricate details of that particular track, but was it recorded as part of Carl's solo deal with Caribou? If so, then I would guess Caribou/Guercio/Sony might have a claim on that track.

I wouldn't personally put that song in the top tier of unreleased tracks; it's a pleasant song of, not surprisingly, a similar ilk as his solo albums.

I had always hoped Carl's solo albums would be reissued with the "My Father's Place" live show as a bonus; but that of course didn't happen.

Regarding the "Cocaine Tapes" as listed above, there's no way they'd ever release all of it or even a substantive part of it. It's probably highly unlikely they'd put *any* of it out, but if they did they'd maybe try to extract a decent edit of "Oh Lord" and "City Blues" and not much else. I'm not even 100% certain Brian and Dennis knew they were being recorded, and I'm not 100% certain anybody knows who owns the tape.

It's not a particularly listenable tape. It's obviously interesting and poignant, but the only reason I'd ever advocate for releasing anything from it is due to the pure, raw emotion Brian brings to "Oh Lord", and the interesting chord progressions on "City Blues" (my mind was blown when Brian re-recorded it in 2004; and then I was disappointed because the final track sounds way too busy and cluttered and muddy; simply put: overproduced). 

If they actually released City Blues, wouldn't that cause them to have to address the fact (it is regarded more or less as a fact, right?) that Denny actually cowrote the song, but oddly wasn't credited on its only official release on Brian's GIOMH album? That's always been a head-scratcher.

There's supposedly a Beach Boys attempt at Oh Lord, but I'm not sure if anyone has heard it.  Maybe it's one of those 15 songs Howie was referring to a couple weeks ago.

They supposedly worked on it (or, at least Brian along with Steve Levine did) in 1984 for the BB '85 album. I don't think I've ever heard or read an actual description of what's on the recording. It could well be a backing track or partial backing track with no vocals.

I recall that they worked on several songs not finished for the album, including possibly Al's "And I Always Will", which he of course put on his solo album 25 years later.

They also worked on a song called Down By The Pier with Carl on lead vocals in 1984

Still waiting for that Live Box. For a band that did so many concerts, the lack of live material released is criminal. Some of it is trickling out now on the MIC box and Sunshine Tomorrow, but still so much out there.  I would love one of the concerts from the summer of 76.

How bout the earlier 70's stuff, with Blondie & Ricky?  Carl was so tough, (no pun), on the earlier recordings for the In Concert album.  And then, in true Beach Boy fashion, they totally blew it, and released an album that didn't feel like a live concert at all.  Well, maybe didn't totally blow it, cause there are some great tracks on there, but it doesn't have the flow that anyone who was there witnessed

Sounds amazing! Plus, the release of "Good News", previously thought to be unreleasable. And all those live tracks too..... they need to better manage the release of these things, especially when it comes to all the amazing music the band didn't put out during their artistic period post-Pet Sounds, stuff that music fans could totally be interested in.

Still no word on the 2018 copyright releases, which I think we've all realized is due to the promotion of the Philharmonic album (which is honestly not for me, the whole point of Brian's work was his complex and groundbreaking arrangements, how could you top that?). It's the "Walk On By" cover released on the CD twofers way back when, but seeing as that song is still not available digitally, they instead posted the superb and beautiful edit done by steel7866, which I'm not sure if they post here, but if so, huge congrats dude! The official page of the man himself endorsed your mix, couldn't think of a more higher compliment.

So considering this was recorded in 1968, could this mean a possible release on streaming services of the originally released of the 55 second version, and maybe because of the popularity of the extended mix (90,000 views for a fan edit of an unknown cover is pretty damn good), maybe an officially edited version by Mark Linnett and Alan Boyd to make it extended? It's such an amazing piece of unfinished music that I don't mind it looping again and again.

No problem, man! It's more than well deserved, your mixes rule. Especially love the "Our Sweet Love" version with extra Brian vocals, it's the only version of the song I listen to now.

Updated to include much more bootlegged and non-bootlegged material, including the rest of the 80's and 90's. A staggering amount of songs, and just goes to show that even with the pool of unheard Beach Boys songs is shrinking every year, there is still an entire catalogue worth of bootlegged music that is crying out to be released.

Does anybody have a year in particular they're looking forward to? 1972 seems like a creatively fertile time for the group, can't wait to hear what's in store for that one. The Love You era also holds a special place in my heart, hearing alternate versions of those songs and those charming piano demos in studio quality would be a dream.

So overall this is pretty darn good, but I think I'd lose some of the opinionated commentary, and there are also a few facts that you've gotten wrong. Also, CD is digital, so when you're saying something isn't available digitally, perhaps you should say "it's not available for purchase on iTunes, Amazon, etc.”

Oh well, no vocals, that's a shame, nonetheless these rehearsals need to be released! I had understood that they were going to be the big archival release that year, until the Legacy POB/Bambu reissue gradually became the #1 priority. It must be very hard to get a physical release project greenlighted nowadays, but I hope Jim Guercio hasn't just put them on the back burner indefinitely, at least no more so than anything else during these times.

Also, Mr. Boyd had said once that there is high-quality, significant DW/Rumbo material left in the vaults. To me that would also be some of the most important stuff to let see the light of day, although the DW Estate/kids might be opposed to it.

There is a great and very intriguing track-by-track description of these POB tour rehearsal tapes, courtesy of Alan Boyd, in the pages of Ken Sharp's fantastic "Dreamer" book. The rehearsals were recorded to 2" 24-track tape, and while none seem to have a complete DW vocal performance, he does do some singing here-and-there.

Wishful thinking beyond "Feel Flows":

So Tough/Holland set, 15BO/Love You/Adult Child set, MIU to KTSA set, and finally whatever remains from '81 to BB85 era.   :hat

Great list! And while this probably belongs in the Unpopular Opinions thread, I'd cap it with "The Terry Melcher Productions."

Consisting of, as well as early Bruce and Terry and Rip Chords, a two-album "Kokomo" sessions set, including painfully slow, meandering songwriting interludes with John Phillips, Scott McKenzie and ML.

Comments/questions in italics.

All evidence indicates "Waves of Love" was never touched by the BBs during BB/TWGMTR sessions. I'd wager if they had worked on it and shelved it, Al would have used those BB elements on his subsequent mixes/releases of the song.

On the other hand, it sounds as though Bruce did steal away some time during actual TWGMTR sessions to work on a new version of "She Believes in Love Again", one that supposedly used elements of the original 84/85 recording (e.g. Bruce's vocal), and added a new vocal from Foskett on Carl's parts. How much work was done is unknown, but it sounds like recording work on this *was* actually done.

The scuttle has usually been that Carl co-wrote "Down by the Pier"; he was certainly writing stuff before, during, and after the '85 sessions with Robert White Johnson and probably others.


I think unreleased live recordings of songs otherwise unreleased by the band is a whole other rabbit hole. There are a ton. "Love Me Tender", "Come Softly To Me", "Bony Maronie", "Dancin' in the Streets", "Wishing You Were Here", "Oh, Pretty Woman", "Merry Minuet", just off the top of my head at the moment.


There would be sort of two versions of the "Beach Boys" version of this song, both very similar.

Brian and Gary Usher brought their studio recording of "Spirit" with them to the pre-show studio recording session for the 25th Anniversary show. Most everything for that show was pre-recorded, with then some live vocals for the actual show. Brian brought his studio recording of "Spirit" (essentially something identical or pretty close to the version/mix he just recently released on his website), and then Mike, Bruce, and Glen Campbell added additonal backing vocals during that pre-TV taping session (Carl and Al apparently staged a walkout in protest to Landy's shenanigans during the session). Then, for the actual live show, presumably some of the mics were live so we have that studio version plus whatever is live during that show. That "live" take would probably sound like a mess, but what hasn't been booted thus far is that studio session version with Mike, Bruce, and Glen adding additional backing vocals.



I think it's fair to say it's pretty likely that some sort of demo for the song exists, even if there aren't any full/proper studio sessions with multiple band members on it.

HeyJude, thanks for responding to most of my questions. Do you think my theory about the 1981 recording of I Ran (All the Way Home) holds any water?

There are so many of these it's ridiculous. Was "Duke of Earl" ever done prior to the split of the band, or just in the Mike & Bruce years.

Add Runaway from the early 80s to that (one of my favourites) - even though it was on the Sunkist LP.

There was a list once put together in the old Aussie BB zine BBA covering this exact matter - I'll have to dig up when I get a chance.

I'd be surprised if it isn't a cover of the Impalas song. Recorded together with the original version of Sweetie at Rumbo, March 1981.

The demo tape with Brian playing Walking on Water, Sweetie, Rings and Don't Let Her Know is dated October 1986 by a voice on a collector cassette, although the songs are all known to have been written by 1985. It's possible that the date could be a year off. Sweetie is just a case of Brian revisiting an old song.

Can't say I have any specialized knowledge on that one; I think your theory sounds quite plausible.

You never know, though. We later found out two *completely* different Brian songs called "Lay Down Burden" existed, and somehow they wrote during the "No Pier Pressure" era a song called "He Come Down" that *isn't* a cover of the "So Tough" song? They did "Where I Belong" in 1985 and apparently Brian has a brand new song for his new documentary titled "Right Where I Belong." There are many examples of course (All I Want To Do/All I Wanna Do).

So there is precedent for very specific song titles to reemerge as completely new songs.

I've long gone on and on about how fascinated I am with this era of material; I'm more interested than most. But I also have no problem saying that there was no even decent, KTSA-level "album" there based on what we know. Even assuming one or two of those Mike tracks are good, an album isn't there. Who possibly wanted a cover of "Roller Skating Child" in 1980? The potential story or explanation for why a remake was cut in 1980 is infinitely more interesting than it would be a feasible, well-thought-out album selection for a 1981-ish album.

The covers we've heard are interesting, but not commercial and are very much the epitome of what hardcore fans would find far more interesting than anybody else.

I'd be quite interested in hearing that studio version of "Sweetie", but the song itself is not A-material. It's the most uninteresting, common chord progression.

"Stevie" might rise to album-quality. A well-made studio version of "City Blues" could have been good.

This material would have had even less of a chance to be a solid album had Bruce somehow ended up in the producer's chair again.

Yes, Sweetie does indeed have Brian, Mike and Al trading lead vocals. And as for Roller Skating Child, I recall reading an article stating that if the Here Comes the Night single did well, then the group was planning on re-recording Roller Skating Child in a similar fashion as their next single. That, plus the song lasting in live sets well into 1979, helps makes it a bit more clearer as to why they went ahead and started work on a remake.

This was a proposed follow-up to KTSA. The board has a couple other threads on it; I could only find the link to one which I will put below. Like HeyJude, I have a strong interest in this era. Maybe it’s because there is all this interesting unheard material. Maybe it’s because they had 5 years of no albums. Maybe it’s because of how great the touring band sounded in 1980, but it’s just really interesting to me.

I don’t want to derail this topic more, but in typical Beach Boys fashion, couldn’t they have used outtakes from previous albums? Or even try to use some of Dennis’ unused songs from Bambu? I think that’d give them at least two albums worth of material (in varying quality) that they could narrow down to make something.

EDIT 10/13/21: My excitement and fast typing resulted in some embarrassing typos that have now been fixed.

Yeah, I think the "Cousins, Friends, and Brothers" project is really not much more than a title. It may have been thrown around as a title for the KTSA album (makes sense since it references the lyric in one of the songs on that album), and post-KTSA the title would occasionally be mentioned by band members (I recall several stories of fans just talking to Bruce or whomever in the 1980-82-ish time frame where Bruce would throw out the title), but it was just a title for a theoretical future album, which at any given moment could of course theoretically include any track that had already been recorded up to that point.

But as far as I know, there was never anything even semi-official about this. They never went into the studio for a "Cousins, Friends, and Brothers Session", and they never got to comping tracks together as an "album."

Knowing what we know now about the state of the band in 1981 and especially 1982 (and 1983 for that matter), it was pretty far fetched to think they could have put together a "new" album during that timeframe. Carl was gone, and recording solo albums while in and out of the band, Brian was off the rails by 1982, and Al, Mike, and Bruce weren't bringing in any A-list material. What were they trying to do? Bruce wanted to record a disco version of "Roller Skating Child?" Al was obsessed with doing that live "Runaway" track. They were sporadically recording material, but with no particular purpose, seemingly done on a whim. "Stevie" is about as formed and planned and commercial as it got during that time frame, and even that project was saddled with and ultimately brought down by group politics and machinations. I guess the 1982 "California Dreamin'" session produced a solid, decent track that proved they could have done more of something like that in 1982, but that project had issues too. Dennis still wasn't there, Brian was minimally involved, it wasn't exactly an inspired original piece of music, and even back then it ended up getting tied up in politics as Carl was supposedly pissed the song was released in 1983 in that state.

Okay, I'm up to speed now.

Reading Jiggy's post, I quickly (hopefully) jumped to the conclusion that there was an actual archival project in the works. I should've known that wasn't the case, because of the mention of a track or tracks not being in the vaults.

ps. It's a wonder that no bootleg, to my knowledge, ever adopted that title, but I guess stuff from this era didn't really leak widely as 60s and 70s stuff.

By the time the 72/73 boxed set is released, a huge hunk of these "Proposed Brother Bonus Tracks" will have been released.

I don't think any of this will hurt potential future boxes.

The question will become what and how will archival sets be formulated for post-1973 material? Will we continue to get somewhat album-themed/album-centric sets? Or will they do a sort of "Bedroom Tapes" type of set to present the 1974-1977-ish material?

Either way, if more archival sets come our way, I think most of these tracks will see release. With the exception of "Lazy Lizzie" perhaps, for obvious reasons. And perhaps we won't see those exact same sort of stripped-down, "underdub" mixes of "Love You" material; alternates of that sort can be presented in a number of ways.

Got me so hyped that maybe some record exec would see the popularity of the article and take a chance on such a set. Years later I get that there is copyright extension stuff to consider, as well as a whole slew of band politics. But at the time I was so hopeful for a Bedroom Tapes set. Perhaps one day...

That track really makes me question how much "sweetening" was really done on Brian's vocals on MIU. Consider the fact that this "I Really Love You" recording is probably still in it's "raw" form.

In 2023, I would love to see a release when includes a lot of live material, including a live version of River Song, as well the original studio recording/demo.

I'd love to get all of whatever exists from the 1974 Caribou Sessions though we may have to wait till 2024 but you never know.  One can hope for an early release! 🤞

I'd wager that the next big release from the vaults will/should probably be the aborted Adult/Child album.  It would be the logical follow-up to the recent two box sets and we are venturing into 15 Big Ones and Love You territory. 

From the looks of it I reckon we’ll probably get something for 1974 this year. Am I expecting another physical release? Absolutely not due to the lack of material from the era. It’ll probably just be another digital only set but I’ll be perfectly fine with that. As long as battle hymn, Rollin’ Up to Heaven and that alt version of Child of Winter get put out (however bad those 3 are) I’ll be happy with it.

I’m pretty sure c-man and Joshilyn confirmed this existed - or at least did exist. During one thread relating to the recording of this song (maybe on a thread about Brian’s bass credits?), it was confirmed that the credits on 15BO for this song aren’t accurate and combine credits from both versions. The first version has Brian on bass, Carl on guitar, and Al producing the basic track. The second has Al on guitar, Carl producing the basic track, and Dennis Dragon on drums (plus overdubbed rhythm and lead guitars from Carl). Bruce might be playing keyboards, and Captain Daryl Dragon is either on bass on keyboards.

It exists, yeah, two separate tries at it.  The basic session that served as the seed of the final 15 Big Ones release had Al on guitar, Bruce on piano, Daryl on Bass, and Dennis Dragon on Drums.  Essentially, they only used the drums from that session for the final product.

Pretty sure that quote is pulled from his 2016 autobiography, so I wouldn't get too excited about it.

Then again, I can now listen to the 1975 version of "In The Back Of My Mind", the 1974 demo of "California Feelin'" and "Where Is She" whenever I feel like it. And even in like, say, 2010, I don't know if I'd believed it. So maybe there really is a recording of "Just An Imitation" and it'll be released!

I am still hoping for a cleaned up version of River Song that was recorded in 73, I believe, as well as a live version.  I was really hoping those would be included in the Sail on Sailor set.  I am still holding onto hope for a live set from 73 and 74 shows.

I believe they could mostly if not fully re-create that rough mix of "River Song" with the multitracks of the finished song. That would be the best way to get a "clean" version of that iteration of the songs.

Count me among those who would pay good money for a Love You boxset, even if it has to include material from 15BO and Adult/Child (which I personally don't care for) to fill it out. Maybe, hopefully, the silver lining to Brian's passing might mean that we get an archival release of material more associated with him as an individual artist. I'd love a comprehensive Paley Sessions boxset, even if a lot of it has come out in other places, it'd be nice to just have it all in one place and without any inferior remixes like in the 04 album. Im not sure what exists in the vaults for Brian's solo career but I'd love an "Imagination...Naked" type release of any raw tapes that may exist pre-Thomas' noodling, or perhaps the same for BW88, if there are demos and/or less overwrought mixes out there that let those songs breathe. (In my opinion the final version is so cacophonous I can hardly make out the melodies.)

Is there any good reason why the SMiLE material hasn't gotten the Pet Sounds treatment of officially released a capella and instrumental only versions of the songs? I know the TSS boxset gave us some session highlights and the "backing vocals montage" track but so much was missing if there wasn't a valid reason like the tapes being lost. Im desperately trying to get my hands on isolated CIFOTM chorus/SU reprise vocals for my fanmix as well as what I believe is referred to as the "Version 1 chorus" of CIFOTM. I wouldn't mind higher quality versions of some of the Psychedelic Sounds as well, though realistically I'm probably alone on that front. Just the Smog and Taxi Cabber skits and more of the Hal Blaine veggie fight would be great. (The one they included in TSS was way too brief.)

I heard a wonderful and rather short vocals only of Child is Father of the man with the very high key baby voice.  Described as ...'spooky surf'.  Also H&V - though vocals only isn't entirely accurate. There was the sound of a bell tolling. Rather odd.

This has jogged my memory, I’ve got a red coloured glossy card cased ocean CD I’ve not listened to for years! What I do remember of it is at the time loving the hi-fidelity in comparison to other SMiLE boots I came across way back then. The audio quality was rich and phat. Hopefully it’s a rich as my distant memory thinks it might be. I think it also had some tracks in stereo but I may be wishful thinking on that. Will dig it out and have a play  :afro

A day or two ago that IAMPAUL YouTube page posted a 15 second clip of "Holy Man" with Carl on lead. It has since been removed.

The KTSA version of "I'll Always Love You" sounds very very similar to the 1975 Barry Mann version (which would make sense, both were produced by Bruce). Carl very, very closely copied the vocal/phrasing of that Mann recording, which initially made me think there was some sort of AI shenanigans going on with Carl's voice on the circulating version. But it's apparently legit.

Very cool to hear; Carl vocals are always great to hear. But lyrically this ain't exactly Van Dyke Parks (or Tony Asher or Mike Love or even Eugene Landy for that matter):

There's a pretty active weaving melody that Carl sings on this thing; it needs like five times more lyrics to fill the melody. The "I" has like 37 notes in it. It almost sounds like someone is reading sheet music to a song with a weaving melody and making up lyrics on the spot.
