Title: Brian Wilson best of compilation
Post by: thetojo on May 10, 2017, 06:42:53 PM
I seem to recall reading in ESQ last year that we'd be hearing about such a project "early"  2017.
Any word?
David?
Anyone?
Little help.

In my not-so-perfect but practical world....

Brian Wilson: Let It Shine 1988-2015

1. Let It Shine
2. Melt Away (1988)
3. Water Builds Up (Sweet Insanity)
4. On The Wings Of A Dove (mainly because it's the only track I can think of that can bridge the synth sound of the previous two cuts with mid-90's onwards)
5. Orange Crate Art
6. Slightly American Music (Paley Sessions)
7. She Says She Needs Me
8. Your Imagination
9. Saturday Morning In The City
10. Wonderful/Song For Children/Child Is The Father Of The Man
11. The Bare Necessities
12. Live Let Live
13. Nothing But Love
14. Sail Away
15. Whatever Happened
16. Love and Mercy (IJWMFTT version)

Messed around a bit with the chronology for the sake of flow.

EDIT: Added a track from TLOS. Doh!

I'd change out a few songs here and there with other worthy choices which appeal more to me but all and all THIS collection works with but one exception.  I would definitely switch out "10. Wonderful/Song For Children/Child Is The Father Of The Man" and replace it with Rio Grande.  I would then add a 2nd disc...the one we all know as BWPS.  THAT entire album is his all time biggest solo greatest hit.  Maybe release it early in 2019 in order to celebrate anniversary # 15?  Remember Carl and the Passions-So Tough included an entire 2nd album as a BONUS disc.

Nice pick on Water Builds Up.

A best of might be tough with all the different labels.

How about some live material?

I made my own custom track listing a while back.  I omitted any duets, covers, or Beach Boys re-recordings including any of Smile (anyone interested in Brian's solo career should hear all of Smile anyways) and included a few non-album gems.

1. Love and Mercy
2. Melt Away
3. Let It Shine
4. This Song Wants to Sleep With You Tonight
5. Your Imagination
6. Lay Down Burden
7. Happy Days
8. This Isn't Love
9. Gettin' In Over My Head
10. Live Let Live (Arctic Tale)
11. Midnight's Another Day
12. Going Home
13. Southern California
14. What Love Can Do
15. The Like In I Love You
16. Nothing But Love
17. One Kind of Love
18. The Last Song

No doubt he has the "Wrinkels" box set with a 3D, glow in the dark album cover of myKe luHv rubbing mineral oil over himself.

I can't really see this kind of compilation happening. Brian's had only one really lasting song as a solo artist, Love and Mercy. It's the only song from his solo career he continues to perform night after night.

I think that's why a compilation would be a good idea.  It would put his solo career into a cohesive context for the first time and therefore more accessible to the casual Beach Boys fan and giving some of his more obscure material a second life of sorts.

I've just tried to make one:
1. Love And Mercy
2. Melt Away
3. Let It Shine
4. It's Not Easy Being Me
5. This Song Wants to Sleep with You
6. Slightly American Music
7. Your Imagination
8. Lay Down Barden
9. Soul Searchin'
10. Gettin' In Over My Head
11. Saturday Morning in the City
12. What I Really Want for Christmas
13. That Lucky Old Sun/Morning Beat
14. Live Let Live
15. Midnight's Another Day
16. Southern California
17. The Like in I Love You
18. Nothing But Love
19. Sail Away
20. One Kind of Love

Including two unreleased songs, but no SI, Orange Crate Art, Disney Album and IJWMFTT. Too much Andy Paley, though.

Agreed. Speaking of compilations, I think one including other BBs' solo recordings would be good for people who are interested in their solo career, but don't feel the need to collect many numbers of solo albums.

What I would like to see is a two disc compilation with the first disc being the "Hits" (Aka: Highlights from all of his albums) and a second disc of unreleased/rare stuff, including songs that were on compilations that are now hard to find..
