Title: Favorite Al Jardine Composition as a Beach Boy
Post by: Wata on May 04, 2017, 07:49:33 AM
Al is always good. He has always done pretty well through 70s/80s, and some of his composition (Susie Cincinnati, Lady Lynda, Santa Ana Winds) are often counted as the best song off these albums.

Now, what is your favorite work among the great Alan Jardine's composition as one of the Beach Boys? Look forward to seeing your interesting opinions.

[Thanks to RangeRoverA1 for the idea of this thread.]

I've voted for Susie Cincinnati. As I said on 5 Big Ones thread, it really should have been on Sunflower, then it would've made that great album at least 30% better! Al rocks!

I don't think She's Got Rhythm is an Al Jardine composition, is it?

According to AGD's site, he co-wrote the song with Brian and Ron Altbach.

Ahhh I see. I was going off of Wikipedia which has it listed as a Love-Wilson-Altbach composition. I don't have my copy of MIU to check but he might've meant it was produced by Jardine? Or I could be completely wrong :lol

I love it and I hate when people call it "wimpy" along with Bruce's compositions on Sunflower. Probably his best vocal he's ever done in my opinion.

Yep. It's funny - Bruce, least favorite BB, sings my favorite BBs ever song.
Some people actually prefer "Tears In The Morning" over AMW. The mind boggles. ::)

I voted All This Is That, but Island Girl is very underrated, in my opinion.

Yes, "All This Is That". A standout track on C&TP--ST and proof that the Boys could come up with a classic sans Brian if they really tried...

island girl!! great one!!  yeap, some of those really need recognition.  'somewhere over japan' 'make it big' 'rock n roll to the rescue'.
great songs right there in the BB cannon.

I voted All This Is That, the best Beach Boys song that Brian had nothing to do with, in my opinion.

Can any of you name favorite Al song he's main songwriter? It's weird to read about BBs, "All This Is That" etc. This is Al thread, let's give him credit, shall we?

"It's about time".

I also love "All this is that" but it doesn't need my vote, I'm sure it will win anyway.

I sure can. Eternal Ballad (Japanese bonus track on 2012 Reissue of A Postcard From California). That would be my favorite song Al Jardine composed completely solo. As for the options given at the top of this thread All This Is That wins hands down.

Although I prefer It's About Time, as far as I know that's mainly a Dennis song. So I voted for Lady Lynda instead

Thank you. It's jolly good indeed. As to "All This Is That" winning - this is not contest thread. People vote songs, that's it.

Thank you, Rei. You understood what I said. Now, the other folks?

Being as thick as two short planks, I'll stick with the winner: "All This Is That". :smokin

It isn't written just by Al. Don't you like Al-written songs from the list?

I really like "Looking At Tomorrow" but that doesn't count either (Gary Winfrey). Damn. Which one would you suggest I like?

Where'd you get that Winfrey thing? Al's written "Lookin' At Tomorrow".

What about "Susie Cincinnati", "Lady Lynda" etc.?

I read the Surf's Up wiki page but Al's name stands 1st. Gary Winfrey is their old chum, he just helped here & there. I started as lurker here at Smiley & never did I read that people said it's mainly Gary Winfrey song. So, it's Al's.

I've no idea how big Gary's input was. And I see that Al's name comes first in the list of authors of "All This Is That". So you see, all's well that ends well. :=)

Fair game - that said, I didn't see people give credit to Al for "All This Is That", they usually would say "great BBs song written without Brian's help". Re: LAT, some 2ndary people shouldn't be counted. Gary Winfrey isn't BB. It's mainly written by Al. As I said, I didn't read any threads with anybody telling Gary's main songwriter & Al just helped. Therefore, it's Al's song. Let's not take credit from him & attribute it to some other people.

Btw, "Take A Load off Your Feet" is 1st Al song than Brian - c-man confirmed it in old thread. :police:

Al and Gary WInfrey initially wrote "Feet", but later on Brian provided additional lyrics (probably the opening verse, which he sings) and helped with the melody (probably the bridge, which he also sings).

I think esquarterly.com may have made an error there. I see it listed multiple places as a Brian / Mike / Ron song, including the official liner notes: http://albumlinernotes.com/M.I.U._L.A.html

There are also some more songs that could be on this list: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Songs_written_by_Al_Jardine

This is a great idea for a poll by the way!
