Hi Guys! Happy New Year!

I've been working on the Acetate containing the final vocals for the Hawaiian chant in Do You Like Worms. Carl is most predominant in the mix (It's been a while since I looked at the sessionography so I can't remember who else sings the lead with him). This tidbit is included on the Durrie Parks acetates and bootlegs. I've worked on the ORIGINAL 1966 vocal arrangement for the H&V verse so I figured I could handle this as well. Turns out it's slightly more difficult. There's A LOT A LOT of noise fuZZ on this disc. Definitely not as much as the H&V one. I've managed to remove all of the POPS during the Hawaiian section (the majority hopefully) and if someone else could at least attempt to remove the noise fuzz off the track it would make my year! I so want to clean this up as best as I can so I can add the kazoos and background vox to it.

Also I've already corrected the speed and gotten it down to mono so you won't need to worry about that.

And okay, I gave it a shot, if it isn't satisfactory I'll put a bit more of work into it haha. It loses some bottom end when i do noise removal so I'd have to find a way around that but the vocals are much much clearer now on the Hawaiian part. Let me know what you think!

@leetwall97, not discounting Seagull's work by any means, but someone you may want to message is 'SonicloveNoize' (could be spelling that wrong). I believe he did a ton of vocal isolation for his Smile mix(es) and it sounded pretty tremendous. He's got an account here though I don't know if he still posts, may be worth shooting him a PM though (just search the board for the name I mentioned and you should be able to easily find his profile).

That being said, what Seagull did above is as equally impressive as what I heard on those Smile mixes, so either way you're in good hands.

Ps, I've never ever heard this or any of the Durrie Parks acetates. So much looking forward to hearing what you guys come up with with this material!

W :o W! This sounds much much better. What program are you using to do this? In fact, how are you doing this? The only complaint I have is that it's too isolated. Give it some fuzz. The track needs some breathing room.

You even removed the pops too! Wow. It doesn't surprise me there's an algorithm to that. I worked on the pops for 3 hours yesterday removing them each individually!

Btw, do you think you could do the same on the others?

Seriously, have they been booted? What about the H&V assembly containing Great Shape?  I'm sure I'd have heard about it if that had surfaced.

By the way, absolutely loved the Child insert into the late piano version of Wonderful you did. Definitely one of those YES! moments.

I honestly don't have much. Just 2 or 3 really important things (to me). I have one of the alternate versions of Bicycle Rider (there's 2 apparently).

I have Disc 2 basically, and it's great. I would love to hear Discs 1, 4 and 7.

I WISH I HAD BOUGHT THEM! I tried tracking them down but to no avail. I'd imagine we'll never hear them. They're in the hands of a "Private Collector".

Wow! Thanks a million HV! I honestly thought no one'd heard that mix. I remember finding the melody for that piece awhile back but I've forgotten it now. It's similar to All Day's melody. I was going to finish that but I needed the vocals from the Smiley Smile version of Wonderful but I couldn't isolate them. Maybe I can get Soniclovenoize to help me out on this!

Okay I can just reduce the fuzz instead of removing it too. And I'm just using a noise removal thing for Adobe Audition nothing crazy. Ill happily do the same to other tracks just link them. I'll try to give it more breathing room

In order for it to sound good, it's got to contain some very faint and light fuzz. But the major fuzz needs to be taken out. Something in between this and your first attempt (maybe closer to your first attempt).

There's really no fuzz problem here. Just some light popping throughout.

I wonder if somebody could isolate the "backing vocals" for the second verse of "Do You Like Worms?"?

Not to get too off topic, but someone on YouTube actually did a pretty good job isolating the truck driving man lyrics from cabinessense. It's phenomenal what you can do with audio programs these days.

yeah I heard that! Really cool to finally hear with some clarity what Dennis is saying. And Jay are you referring to what is behind the Hawaiian chant or the hum de do da hum de da da vocals after the first chorus?

I used to have the "truck driving man" isolated part, but I lost it. I'd love to have the backing vocals for the second verse of DYLW isolated, and the "cornucopia" verse of Vega-Tables isolated without the laughing sounds.

Whoever did that really deserves praise. That reminds me, I need to get it before YouTube takes it off (they will when I finally need it).

I don't understand why they changed/left out some lyrics. You can easily use all of the words in the Truck Drivin' Man rant than the Telephone Direct one.

Regarding the Original Vaga-Tables; Do you want the full Instrumental without laughs or the Vocals without laughs?

It's the part that was released with the speed problem on the Good Vibrations set. The "hum be do da, hum ba da da" chant.

this is just a quick attempt, I'm struggling with some of it so someone more qualified than me I welcome to take a stab at it! I definitely can help more with fuzz than pops haha

Hey guys I was bored so I spent an hour or so making a stereo worm mix (as best I could) with Carl's vocal included it. IT has some tech errors here and there and yeah I did cheat with some 2004 stuff but oh well. Let me know what you thing and thanks to LeetWall for lending me the sample.  :-D

Flippin wonderful. I love mixes that include the 2004 Smile vocals (wherever they're needed). That transition to the Mahalos is killer. Any other plans to work on other Smile material?

Thanks very much for this!  It's great to have people on here who have the talent to create these things.

I especially like the use of the 2004 vocals, since that's what we have to work with, and I think they work quite well with the original song.

I'd actually love to see you continue to refine your work on Worms.  Aside from what you say are tech errors (which I can't really hear, perhaps because I'm not in a spot where I can play the song at a decent volume), I would suggest losing the "wooo wooo" at the end, since that is purely a 21st-century invention, and replacing it with the extended piano br theme, as was originally there.  Just my thought though- others may hear very different things.

I'm not sure if I'm familiar with the extend theme your referring to. Does anyone have a sample of this I could hear?

All these "snippets" are well known for years through bootlegs (SOT, Vigotone, H & V sessions vol 1 & 2...). If you look them up you'll be surprised how much goodies you'll find  :)
But on the other hand it's refreshing for someone try ing to "update" them (with missing vocals) and give us a look at what Smile could have been in 1967. So go for it!
I enjoy these mixes!

However, it's also sad, beacuse it shows how close BW was to completing Smile, "just few vocals away" like Vosse and Anderle said in their 1968/1969 interviews!

Actually, that was a vintage piece of music.

It is vintage piece, nobody said otherwise but it's use in DYDW is 2004 invention, to smothen the pass to Barnyard, because of live shows!
1966 DYDW ends with BR theme, in some cases with theme vinding down, and in other cases it starts again till it fades again...

The way jeff worded it, it sounded like he was saying that piece was strictly recorded for BWPS, instead of being a vintage 1960's written piece.

Really? I have been a rather avid collector of Smile boots for 20+ years and both of these acetates sound "new" to me, particularly Carl's vocal on the Hawaiian chant. And neither vocal appears to have made it on the Smile box set, suggesting further that these versions are less than commonplace...

Maybe I'm mistaken, but Carl's or maybe Dennis's vocal on hawaiian chant in DYDW is known through Smile Vigotone 110, track 24.
Regarding H&V Brian verse 1966, thhis one I know through Preiss tape, maybe first ever Smile leaks, from 1978-9 I think. Don't have that one one me now, so can't tell track number, but I'm pretty sure I recognize that version of HV verse with that Brian energetic vocal. Also found on H&V sessions, vol 2, track 10.
Love that vocal, but also love Brian and Mike trading vocals on 1967, January mix!

Sorry, I had assumed that everyone was aware that the woo woos were originally recorded in 1966-67.  In any case, they were recorded for H&V, and to my knowledge were never placed in any other song at the time.

You're welcome! This stuff needs to get out before it becomes forgotten! The other stuff I want to remaster is nothing mind blowing. I have the master take of The Old Master Painter and the Child Is Father of the Man acetates (the vocals are slightly different than the Smile Sessions on those, but still much better). Oh, and I don't remember how I got the DYLW and H&V acetates.  :lol


Absolutely! The biggest reason Smile didn't come out was the lyrics; they weren't finished! Van Dyke abandoned the project. Brian tried to finish them for songs like CFM and Look but he just couldn't capture Van's wordplay. The 2nd reason is the song restructuring on the singles f'd up the flow of the suites on the album.
