Title: Let's experiment! How does the "East or West Indies" lyric work?
Post by: leetwall97 on November 18, 2016, 11:56:13 AM
First off, I'd like to say that I'd prefer if we do not choose a single entry or idea someone put forth and label it as the definite version. Since we don't know what the definite version is like, none of us have the authority to claim a submission as so.

Having said that...
I want us to try and figure out how the missing lyric in Do You Like Worms? would've gone. The version I think we should use is "Having returned to the East or West Indies we always got them confused", which was submitted to us by Frank Holmes. I imagine this lyric would've gone over the "Fall-Out" Part of the Bicycle Rider theme (it's the only place left in DYLW). At some point I'm going to present how I think the vocals would've gone, but for now I really want to hear everyone else's interpretation of it! There's a lot to experiment with here. Should the Indian chants be included? Should Al's Bahm-Bahm-Bahm's be included also? Should the kick drum and fuzz bass be overdubbed as well? Who knows? So let's experiment!

It's one of those Smile mysteries I'm sure we'd all love to know the answer to.

I've always imagined it as being a spoken word interlude in between tracks.

Wow! That's a really fun idea! Like in between the pause after the 1st Bicycle Rider or just after the song?

Or better yet, show us! Make a rough edit

I'm sure it would have gone over the tag

I always thought of it being spoken over the descending harpsichord outro, after which it picks up again for the fade-out. I can hear Brian speaking it in my head, the smooth, calm voice of his softly speaking, "And as we returned to the East or West Indies...we always got them confused". Think of the spoken voice he uses during "Can't Wait Too Long" ("And now I'm alone lying down, looking up at the stars"), that's the voice that I hear!

Bingo. Exactly as I hear it in my head. Similar to the "you're under arrest" bit, but without the comedy feel. More like a narration. Although, I think it would have been spoken after the harpsichord outro, but without it picking up again. I think it would have been spoken after the music had ended. To bad we don't have a recording of him saying those lines. Even if it were just casually spoken during the session(similar to how Brian recites the lyric for The Old Master Painter in the control booth).

it would have been sung over the 'bicycle rider' music-box fade out - its got the same meter as the 'bicycle rider' lyrics

Here's a link to the song:    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x9WnRRVBodg

So imagine the vocals starting with "As we returned..." right at 3:35 with Brian's falsetto. Then starting right at 3:43 Mike comes in  (using his silliest nasal voice) with "We always got them confused" ending at 3:48. The lyrics would fit pretty good there. I think it works just fine as an instrumental bit though.

I think it would sound good spoken, except over the Hawaiian chants at the end. It seems like you could put a little something more there.

Wow. That was really good! Thanks a million for that!

Have you thought about adding extra "Confused"'s?
"We always got them confused-confused-confused-confused...."
To cover the rest of the harpsichord.

Do you guys think Brian would've added the Kick Drum and Fuzz Bass to it? I've tried it and it sounds good
