Title: RIP Leon Russell
Post by: Rocky Raccoon on November 13, 2016, 07:52:01 AM
We've lost another great one.  I put this in General Discussions as in addition to being a legend in his own right, Russell was a member of the Wrecking Crew and played piano on several Beach Boys recordings.

Which songs by Th Beach Boys did Leon participate on?

A great musician from an era of great music!

A member of the Wrecking Crew, this guy had the habit of showing up all over the place in the least expected circumstances and with the least expected people. Truly a master of music and cross genre performance.

Another sad and huge loss. Leon was one of those studio musicians who played on so many familiar hits without people realizing it was him playing. Of course add his solo career, his career as a producer/arranger, his career as a songwriter...quite the legacy. Everyone has heard his work who has listened to the radio in the past 50 years, that is not an overstatement.

He's on quite a few BB's cuts, Brian called him "my keyboard guy". If you see any session credits, Leon went by the name "Russell Bridges".

It's also pretty wild to think how many people every year party to the track "Monster Mash" by Bobby "Boris" Pickett...just a few weeks ago they were doing the same thing. Fast forward a few weeks to Christmas and how many people will be partying to Darlene Love's "Christmas Baby Please Come Home". Those incredible piano runs at the end of the record...Leon.

And that's just one or two examples of Leon's massive body of work.

RIP

Said it before - Leon is my favorite pianist/keyboard player. Among the best. & very good singer to boot too.

Spent the afternoon reading, watching and listening to/about him.

Read funny stuff about him in a book about the Wrecking Crew.
Watched his interviews in the Wrecking Crew movie (in one interview, gave high praise to Brian)

Listened to some of the Mad Dogs and Englishmen album
Also music when he worked with New Grass Revival.
And other stuff for the evening will be on tap.

RIP.

This hits hard.

A couple of links. First Leon with just a piano singing his second biggest hit in 2002

And a little something (well more than a little, nearly an hour) from when rock music on PBS meant something besides one of those interminable pledge specials. Leon gets going about three minutes in:

Many people underrate Leon's singing which was AS good as his playing. F.ex. "Welcome to Hollywood" when he worked with Marc Benno in "Asylum Choir".
