Title: I have a quick request for the Musical Members of Smiley Smile
Post by: leetwall97 on November 10, 2016, 08:51:31 PM
Can someone please transcribe the chords for the following pieces from the All Day session? The various sections can be found here:

Do you want JUST chords, or do you want sheet music?

Just the chords please! I can't read sheet music.

You're welcome to post both though!

I could't go to the piano to really work this out but it's definitively Gb - Ab7 - Db7/Co/Db7, with some color notes added for each chord (I'd say the 13th with Gb). It is the same progression for Love to Say Da-Da/Blue Hawaii (and Heroes and Villains, but with a different timing).

^ Doesn't sound right to me. I have Gb9 (Gb left hand / Bb-Db-Ab right hand) to Db6 (Db / Bb-Db-Gb).

Can't figure out the rest.

Yeah that's more accurate

I reckon guitarfool is your man when it comes to deciphering chords (wherever he is)...

Ok so, the progression is Gb - Ab - Db, but with some movement inside the chords. The first one basically moves between Gbmaj7 and Gb6(9)/Db. The second one moves between Ab7 and Ab7sus4/Bb (Bb left hand / Ab-Db-Eb-Gb right hand - that's the chord which terrei referred to as Db6). The third one is Db, with some nice movement in the bass, maybe without the seventh, and it finalizes in Ao. I recorded myself playing it to confirm it: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B7-MLlpEFs_AN1IySGg3SXB1a3M/view?usp=sharing

1st tack piano take:
Left hand (counting all notes, even passing):
F#, C#, F#, C#, Bb, A

Ab, A, Bb, A, Bb, A, Bb, A, Bb,

Ab, G, Ab, Bb, C#, A.

Right hand (copied from James Hughes-Clarke):
F#maj9, F#6/C#, F#maj9, F#6/C#,

G#7, D#m7/A#, G#7, D#m7/A#, G#7

C#7, G#m7, C#7, A7dim

It's a variation on Love to Say Dada, mathen_ is right.

Thank you guys sooo much! This is great! It's one thing to come on this forum and talk "blah-blah-dittyy-blah" and all, but to actually come here to work... I'm flattered, so thanks for helping me and everyone else figure this out!

And yes it's definitely the Dada variation. I find it funny that we compare it Dada, since Holidays was the first to use this variation. Isn't this all so weird how the same progression became Dada in '66, then was found in All Day in '67, and then after rerecording Vega-tables he re-recorded Dada in a different key? What was he getting at?

I do have one more request actually. I'd love to have the '66 versions of Dada transcribed. And can we check to make sure that both of these versions are in the same key? That would be great! And thanks for all of the work guys. This thread is awesome!
