Title: Amy Winehouse Post by: Ovi on October 27, 2016, 03:49:57 PM To celebrate Back to Black's 10-year anniversary I wrote a review of it attempting to explain what is it that makes it one of my favorite albums of the 2000s.

Title: Re: Amy Winehouse Post by: Emily on October 27, 2016, 07:48:21 PM I love the album. It's one of my favorites, and not just of the 2000s. Amy Winehouse was brilliant. Her lyrics work in musical, phrasing, and story-telling terms and, of course, there's her voice, which sounded so natural but was so minutely controlled that it did exactly what she wanted when she wanted. And she clearly thought through every vibration. Also, I really like the musical vibe - the arrangements which, as you say, were retro, perhaps too imitative, but they completely work for me.
Amazing and too short. I wonder if I could fit one, more, comma, in the above paragraph. Title: Re: Amy Winehouse Post by: JK on October 28, 2016, 04:04:11 AM Hi Ovi. Very cool review.
I'm one of probably many who were overly influenced by the media focus on her excesses (a bit like Pete Docherty) and shied away from her music. I even made patronizing remarks about her on this forum (well, we all do things we're later ashamed of). Since then a friend sent me Back to Black. I love this album. If there has to be a stand-out track for me it's "Tears Dry On Their Own". The chorus is one of the saddest things I've ever heard; the music is majestic. I think the connection with the optimistic Marvin Gaye--Tammi Terrell song only makes it more poignant. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ojdbDYahiCQ Frank is good. Back to Black is a timeless classic. Posthumous compilation of songs from various periods of her career. Title: Re: Amy Winehouse Post by: JK on October 29, 2016, 04:14:10 AM Frank is good. Back to Black is a timeless classic.
