Generally speaking I prefer covers of his songs (Dylan's voice can drive me up the wall at times) but as a lyricist (poetry for the ear) he's hard to beat. Lyrics are tied to particular notes and melodies. I see it as the realm of music. It's not like for like.

Many of Bob's lyrics actually gain (always imho) if you simply read them. It's different for Leonard Cohen, where his distinctively deep singing voice is an integral part of the experience.
About Bob's lack of acknowledgement of the prize: I don't know how to interpret it. I saw him at one of David Letterman's * last shows, and Bob "sang" his song but didn't speak a single word. As for Bob, I see his punishing tour schedule as a form of general response to awards and accolades in general----it's all about the music and getting it across to as many people as possible. Or maybe he just doesn't understand (or appreciate) the lyrics being isolated from the music... |
