Title: No comment on the Nobel to Bob Dylan?
Post by: thorgil on October 14, 2016, 10:15:39 AM
The BB forums seem to ignore this event up to now. I agree 100% wiith the jury's choice (if anything, a bit late!). I don't dig Bob a lot as a musician, but think he's a very good, sometimes great, poet.

I love him as a musician and writer, and was glad to see him get the award.

Well, seems the subject is taboo here. Ty Captain for answering.

Thanks for bringing this up, General. I think it's a most enlightened decision. Generally speaking I prefer covers of his songs (Dylan's voice can drive me up the wall at times) but as a lyricist (poetry for the ear) he's hard to beat. Well done, jury. :=)

Not sure I agree about song lyrics counting.  Lyrics are tied to particular notes and melodies.  I see it as the realm of music.  It's not like for like.

Amused to see his lack of acknowledgement.

Lyrics do count imho. Many of Bob's lyrics actually gain (always imho) if you simply read them. It's different for Leonard Cohen, where his distinctively deep singing voice is an integral part of the experience.
About Bob's lack of acknowledgement of the prize: I don't know how to interpret it. I saw him at one of David Letterman's * last shows, and Bob "sang" his song but didn't speak a single word. He didn't even look at David.

* How I miss David!

The Dude speaks!

As for Bob, I see his punishing tour schedule as a form of general response to awards and accolades in general----it's all about the music and getting it across to as many people as possible.

Or maybe he just doesn't understand (or appreciate) the lyrics being isolated from the music...
