Title: Re: New Brian album Post by: mathen_ on October 05, 2016, 04:15:38 AM Rock n roll album? Boooooring.
Title: Re: New Brian album Post by: JK on October 05, 2016, 04:49:10 AM Thanks, Adw.
I can't wait to find out which songs he's chosen and how he treats them. Looking forward to the album. Title: Re: New Brian album Post by: jiggy22 on October 05, 2016, 05:39:43 AM Keeping my fingers crossed for "Shortenin' Bread" and "Be My Baby"! Judging by the PS50 concerts, I wouldn't be surprised if "River Deep, Mountain High" makes the cut.
Title: Re: New Brian album Post by: GoofyJeff on October 05, 2016, 05:47:13 AM Oh... he's finally getting around to releasing the Rock n Roll album that has been promised since Imagination nearly 20 years ago? I'll believe it when I see it. And then, let me guess, he'll follow up with an album called Pleasure Island.
Title: Re: New Brian album Post by: debonbon on October 05, 2016, 05:58:18 AM I just saw this story on FB and came here immediately. The vapourware rock n' roll album! Again!
Title: Re: New Brian album Post by: NateRuvin on October 05, 2016, 06:13:04 AM Boring? I'll take any new music from Brian!
Title: Re: New Brian album Post by: HeyJude on October 05, 2016, 06:18:37 AM Yeah, definitely nothing new in that article. It's basically another instance of Brian mentioning that he'd like to do that "rock and roll" album.
I'm also pretty certain that even if he had begun recording (and I doubt he's had much time to do a lot of studio work since March when the tour started), it's extremely unlikely they'd get any album out before the end of this year. I've already gone on record that while I love the idea of Brian continuing to create, regardless of the exact theme of a given project, a "rock and roll" album doesn't interest me a great deal. Brian is capable of recording well-done re-recordings of oldies from the 50s and 60s, but I've always been far, far more interested in original material. The best thing, in my mind, that could come out of the decades-old idea of a "rock and roll album" would be that it might help feed Brian's muse and mood for music in general. If it would truly be fulfilling for him, that would probably worth more to me than the degree to which I actually would *love* the recordings themselves. Ballads and melodic pop tunes have always been Brian's thing. The thought of hearing an album full of doo-wop songs or 12-bar-blues numbers, of hearing Chuck Berry remakes, etc., just doesn't sound very interesting. I'd be more excited by a Blu-ray of the PS tour or something. My guess is that if Brian does something along the lines of this album, it won't be strictly old school Chucky Berry-style "rock and roll"; it will probably just be 50s and 60s songs he digs, and maybe a few originals. I would guess nothing on it would be awful, and much of it would be like his covers of stuff like "California Sun" or "Listen to Me", etc. I think there's always room for a random gem of a re-recording. But in the realm of unrealistic "what he *should* release" wishes, I'd rather see him finish off the "That's Why God Made the Radio" outtakes, throw in some other "suite" stuff, maybe toss in a few oldies covers. Title: Re: New Brian album Post by: ♩♬🐸 Billy C ♯♫♩🐇 on October 05, 2016, 08:30:58 AM Yeah, no way it'll be out before the end of the year. Maybe he meant NEXT year.
Simply not enough time, with the touring and all Title: Re: New Brian album Post by: Rocker on October 05, 2016, 08:52:10 AM Really would like to hear Brian doing something like that. I tried to figure a possible tracklist. Add to that "River deep, mountain high" and his own "I'm broke" which he played in concert but weren't mentioned by me in this post:
http://smileysmile.net/board/index.php/topic,20516.msg514931.html#msg514931 Since he might have Blondie on the album they could revisit "For your precious love" which Blondie recorded and sang with The Flame(s): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1bcHj-pBph8 I also really like the 15 Big Ones outtake of "Shake, rattle and roll" which I think Al could still do a great job with. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RxkB2E8yk_Q I could get very excited for this. Maybe we all should make a list of ideas for songs he could record, so Brian doesn't have to do it all by himself. ;D Title: Re: New Brian album Post by: Kid Presentable on October 05, 2016, 08:54:00 AM Hey come on you guys, in 2004 he was given a chance to reclaim Smile and it made in everybody happy. Why shouldn't he also be given the chance to reclaim 15 Big Ones? :)
Title: Re: New Brian album Post by: Rocker on October 05, 2016, 08:57:10 AM Hey come on you guys, in 2004 he was given a chance to reclaim Smile and it made in everybody happy. Why shouldn't he also be given the chance to reclaim 15 Big Ones? :) Because that son-of-a-b!tch unfortunately got released Title: Re: New Brian album Post by: thorgil on October 05, 2016, 09:31:13 AM Instead, I'd love if the RnR album finally came to fruition, especially if it featured at least a couple of new rockers by Brian. He's the King of Rock'n'Roll, after all. :)

I'll add to that list... a couple of Phil Spector tracks... DO I LOVE YOU (The Ronettes) BLACK PEARL (Sonny Charles & the Checkmates) Title: Re: New Brian album Post by: ♩♬🐸 Billy C ♯♫♩🐇 on October 05, 2016, 10:40:03 AM My daughter is always talking about how cool it would be if Brian covered ELO's "Strange Magic"

Title: Re: New Brian album Post by: Matt H on October 05, 2016, 10:51:31 AM I wonder if he would include "I'm Broke" since he dusted that off last year in concert?
Title: Re: New Brian album Post by: ♩♬🐸 Billy C ♯♫♩🐇 on October 05, 2016, 10:57:18 AM That'd be a good one too, Matt.
Here's another one that just occurred to me... "Baby Blue" by Badfinger! Title: Re: New Brian album Post by: thorgil on October 05, 2016, 10:59:08 AM Brian's RnR album will be 48 minutes of variations on Shortenin' Bread. (And I'd love that!) :)

Title: Re: New Brian album Post by: Jay on October 05, 2016, 11:30:57 AM You know what I'd like to hear Brian record? "I'm Not In Love" by 10cc.
Title: Re: New Brian album Post by: ♩♬🐸 Billy C ♯♫♩🐇 on October 05, 2016, 11:45:54 AM OMG that would be killer!
I'd love it if the album isn't a straight-ahead RNR album, but covers of 60s and 70s songs in general. Title: Re: New Brian album Post by: Jay on October 05, 2016, 11:51:42 AM How about "That's All For Everyone" by Fleetwood Mac?
Title: Re: New Brian album Post by: ♩♬🐸 Billy C ♯♫♩🐇 on October 05, 2016, 11:58:56 AM Yes!!!
Title: Re: New Brian album Post by: Jay on October 05, 2016, 12:07:08 PM Here's my list of songs I'd like to hear Brian record:
1. Take Me To Church 2. I'm Not In Love 3. That's All For Everyone 4. Awake(same arrangement as his piano demo but in his "mature" voice) 5.Patience 6. Angie 7. Wild Horses 8. Fool To Cry 9. Moody Blue 10. River Deep, Mountain High 11. A Change Is Gonna Come(maybe sung by Blondie?) 12. When Something Is Wrong With My Baby Title: Re: New Brian album Post by: B.E. on October 05, 2016, 12:16:18 PM Brian mentions a few songs by name in his book. I believe he has also mentioned Buddy Holly, in addition to Chuck Berry. If you click on the link in reply #11 of Brian's Book Thread you'll see the songs on page 281. I'd list it here but don't want to spoil the book for anyone. It'll be interesting to see what makes the final cut. As others have mentioned, I'd like it if he just records songs he loves, regardless of genre. Although, 50s and early 60s is fine with me!

Title: Re: New Brian album Post by: Pretty Funky on October 05, 2016, 12:56:14 PM I also wonder if this album is finally going to eventuate. He has said the same before and it reads like a stock answer to interviewers questions.
Are you working on a new album? BW: Yeah...it's going to be a R&R album. Great....When will it be released? BW: Maybe by the end of the year. Thanks for a good interview.....Next! :lol Title: Re: New Brian album Post by: ♩♬🐸 Billy C ♯♫♩🐇 on October 05, 2016, 01:08:58 PM That is also true.
I do want another Brian album, though, badly. Title: Re: New Brian album Post by: Jay on October 05, 2016, 01:11:56 PM Here's my list of songs I'd like to hear Brian record: 1. Take Me To Church 2. But also this: Who's gonna drive you home? - The Cars https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u3K1vBlFCaY I don't think though that these would be fitting for a Rock'n'Roll album. Let's safe them for another album. I also wonder if this album is finally going to eventuate. He has said the same before and it reads like a stock answer to interviewers questions. Are you working on a new album? BW: Yeah...it's going to be a R&R album. Great....When will it be released? BW: Maybe by the end of the year. Thanks for a good interview.....Next! :lol Well, he has said it for like 20, 30 years... But it's fun nonetheless to think about the content. We really should help him come up with a tracklist.... :) Title: Re: New Brian album Post by: HeyJude on October 05, 2016, 01:28:02 PM Brian covering ELO could be potentially awesome. I think a "covers" album would be interesting if they broadened the scope to go outside of just things from the 50s and early-mid 60s.
Years ago, a fake McCartney covers album track listing was circulating, and it mentioned Brian doing "Dear Boy." While an obvious choice, I think that could be magnificent. Other than a few other tiny tidbits (a little interlude in "Vintage Clothes" for instance), "Dear Boy" is one of McCartney's most obvious Brian tributes. Title: Re: New Brian album Post by: MikestheGreatest!! on October 05, 2016, 04:02:23 PM Ugh, hope this is not really true. Who needs an album of rock and roll covers from Bri at this late date? I will believe it when I see it.
Title: Re: New Brian album Post by: Amy B. on October 05, 2016, 05:28:27 PM Every once in a while, Brian tells a reporter that he's doing a rock and roll album. And this has been going on for years. Does anyone else suspect that this is one long running joke he's playing on us? :-D

I had it on youtube until my profile got banned! I dig all the rare stuff one can find on eBay, but in the case of "Listen to Me", it's not exactly an obscure, out of print track. One can buy it for $1.29 on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Listen-To-Me-Album-Version/dp/B005J59FFW And the entire CD of covers can be bought for just over $5 on Amazon right now as well: https://www.amazon.com/Listen-Buddy-Holly-Various-Artists/dp/B005Q9SN9K/ref=tmm_acd_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr= And for those not inclined to purchase, it can still heard on YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zgPq3NKotzo Title: Re: New Brian album Post by: HeyJude on October 06, 2016, 12:23:36 PM Random thing I noticed on Amazon. The bestselling rank for individual download purchased for Brian Wilson tracks on Amazon goes like this:
1. Love and Mercy (from BW '88) 2. Peace on Earth (Amazon exclusive track from "In the Key of Disney") 3. Sail on Sailor (Live version from the recent "Brian Wilson & Friends" CD) 4. The Right Time (from NPP) 5. God Only Knows (re-recording from "What Love Can Do" CD, which I think is repackaging of the "New Songs from Old Friends" CD) 6. Sail Away (from NPP) Then it's a lot of "Smile" and "No Pier Pressure" stuff, with a number of other one-off tracks (e.g. "Goodnight Irene") sprinkled in. Title: Re: New Brian album Post by: kermit27 on October 06, 2016, 12:34:15 PM Nice to see everyone wanted Blondie's live "Sail On Sailor." All those downloaders really should checkout the "Wild Honey."
Title: Re: New Brian album Post by: coco1997 on October 06, 2016, 05:17:48 PM Brian also recently covered Little Richard's "Keep A Knockin" and Jimmie Rodgers' "Honeycomb," so add those to the list. :)
Title: Re: New Brian album Post by: RangeRoverA1 on October 06, 2016, 05:39:01 PM Random thing I noticed on Amazon. There's many cases of forgotten songs to get new wave of interest due to being featured in a film.1. Love and Mercy (from BW '88) Title: Re: New Brian album Post by: The_Beach on October 11, 2016, 02:07:49 PM Maybe Brian has a bunch recorded thruogh the past 5-10 years and only needs to do a little studio touch up so he can get it released in time for Christmas! you guys never know it is Brian frickin Wilson!!! :bw

That is exactly what I was thinking. Some of the TWGMTR songs were written earlier than released, so I think it would be fair to say that Brian has some unreleased stuff in the cans that he can compile into an albums worth of material and polish off. Hopefully with Al's vocals as well as he can still rock. "Yes. I'm just as creative as I was 50 years ago but I don't work as fast. I work a little slower. I'm going to make an album December. I'm going to call it – so far, this is just a working title – Sensitive Music for Sensitive People. I think that's a good title and a good starting point." |
