Title: Don't you just know it Brian Wilson and Jan Berry Post by: Rocker on July 20, 2006, 05:31:47 AM What about this track? Was it released (if so, any chart success?)? Who did produce/arrange? Who played on it? I really like it. Brian and Jan sound great on it. I just wish they had worked together in the studio more often.
Title: Re: Don't you just know it Brian Wilson and Jan Berry Post by: Zander on July 20, 2006, 05:57:52 AM It was released as a single in 1973, I don't think it was a commercial success but it certainly is catchy! I *THINK* it was produced by Brian. Maybe someone else can give you a little more info...? You can find it on the "Get the Boot" Bootleg, CD 2.

Title: Re: Don't you just know it Brian Wilson and Jan Berry Post by: MBE on July 20, 2006, 08:58:40 PM I think it was really good but Brian wasn't promoted as being on it. One of my faves that doesn't get talked about much.

No chart action whatsoever. The old Huey 'Piano' Smith song. Who also wrote "Sea Cruise" I wonder if Brian was into New Orleans piano music at one point. Some years ago I saw a TV show about the story of rock'n'rol,l where Brian participated and he said that he liked Fats Dominos playing, becáuse he played some nice picturesqe chords. Brian's own piano playing can be a little fat and heavy like some of those guys. Søren Title: Re: Don't you just know it Brian Wilson and Jan Berry Post by: Mark A. ODE 66034 — summer 1973 (promo) (Ode was Lou Adler's label, distributed by A&M) Released as "Jan" b/w "Blue Moon Shuffle" . . . later known as "Tinsel Town," written by Jan Berry and Roger Christian (which was also released on Ode in the late summer of '74). There is also evidence that Jan was working on a version of "Don't You Just Know it" back in the '60s. That's not surprising, because Jan cut his musical teeth on Black R&B records of the 1950s. While Brian Wilson was listening to the Four Freshmen and similar groups . . . Jan Berry was grooving to the Hollywood Flames, etc. For all his Psychedelic experimentation on Carnival of Sound . . . Jan was working on three other '50s R&B-style tunes during his Warner Bros. period in '67-'68 . . . "Yakety Yak," "Stay," and "In the Still of the Night" (the latter featuring a spoken interlude by Davy Jones of the Monkees). Jan's original music scores for all of these songs (including "Don't You Just Know It") still exist . . . and are in my possession. M. What is the story behind Brian helping Jan out with this song? How long had Jan been out of hospital when Brian hung out with Jan in the studio. What is the story behind Brian helping Jan out with this song? How long had Jan been out of hospital when Brian hung out with Jan in the studio. Well, Jan got out of hospital after his big accident in '67 I believe and already started working on music (the fantastic Carnival Of Sound). Jan's abilities to speak had recovered quite a lot at this point (1970) so that he could sing again. Title: Re: Don't you just know it Brian Wilson and Jan Berry Post by: Slow In Brain on August 27, 2012, 04:22:57 AM These unknown, forgotten stories of stuff that Brian has done are way more interesting than the tabloid stuff about him...I bet Jan appreciated his old buddy hanging out with him.
Did they record anything else ? Recently my wife brought back from NZ heaps of magazine articles I made from the late 1980s to late 1990s, a lot of stuff from the OCA and IGIJWMFTT period...used to have scrapbooks then found it easier to just have all the loose sheets. Had the foresight to copy onto A3...what is the best method to upload on this MB ? Title: Re: Don't you just know it Brian Wilson and Jan Berry Post by: Slow In Brain on October 09, 2013, 03:36:29 AM Lol I will reactivate this thread again... I was checking out the Jan & Dean books that Mr McParland wrote at the State Library today and noticed that this song was recorded on January 22 1966, prior to the accident. Didn't mention when Brian's vocal was recorded which could have been later of course, but then again he does sound quite young.
Title: Re: Don't you just know it Brian Wilson and Jan Berry Post by: Andrew G. Doe on October 09, 2013, 02:26:48 PM Brian's vocal was recorded in 1970 (like I said back in 2006 :lol ). Jan's, I think, closer to the actual release date.
