Title: Somewhere Near Japan + The Church’s Under the Milky Way: keyboard sounds
Post by: CenturyDeprived on May 24, 2016, 02:58:41 PM
Give a listen to The Church’s famous 1988 song, “Under the Milky Way”:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pWxJEIz7sSA

Between 1:33 to 1:53, there’s a repeating “twinkling” type keyboard part that is heard during pauses between the lines of lyrics.

Then give a listen to The BB’s 1989 song, “Somewhere Near Japan:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bAdeXsyIvE4

Repeatedly throughout the song, at 3:01, 3:18, 3:37, 3:55, 4:12, 4:31, a very, very similar-sounding keyboard part is heard.

Is this the exact same type of keyboard and patch/setting? And does anyone think this is a complete coincidence, or did Terry Melcher, when producing SNJ, perhaps intentionally ape of the sound from “Under the Milky Way”?

Just wanted to bump this topic in case anyone has any thoughts on this?

While not a keyboard sound, the only derivative element that stands out to me is the intro to The Church’s “Under the Milky Way” reminds me of the intro to America's "Sister Golden Hair" from 13 years earlier.
