Title: Brian's Yahoo Chat from July 2000
Post by: HeyJude on May 03, 2016, 03:16:03 PM
In trying to recall some questions I got through to Brian on a Yahoo Chat way back in 2000, I finally managed to track down the transcript via the "Web Archive":

That was a really interesting read! It's funny that he said he loves Pacific Ocean Blue. There's been some back and forth on that subject for quite some time! I like how someone asked if he'd be performing Smile, and he said they'd perform it the following spring, but when someone asked if he was teasing them about that, he said yes. I forget that chats like these have been around as long as they have. I've lived in a house with Internet my entire life, and it's cool to think Brian Wilson has been using it to his and the fans' benefit for nearly as long.

Correct! Whomever was the moderator of those chats let several of my questions through during two different chats around that time, one for Brian and the other for Peter Frampton (I started another thread about the Brian Wilson story I got out of Frampton during that chat).

I recall that George Harrison did an online chat around that same time, but predictably it had like a hundred times more people on it, so none of my questions got through.

I'm trying to remember if I did any other chats. Obviously, folks don't much do such "chats" anymore with Twitter and Facebook and whatnot. But it was a pretty novel thing back in the late 90s and early 2000s.

Oh, and reading the BW transcript made me remember that I didn't get my "Darlin'" question across correctly. I wanted to know the first line, as in the opening line, which is essentially the chorus. Brian answered with the first line of the first verse, which is of course much easier to understand. I dunno, maybe there just weren't as many online lyric websites in 2000.  :lol

Man, that takes me back.  I also remember the very early days of the "Blueboard" on Brian's website (1999-2000).  I would anxiously await a "Brian" post that would be highlighted in yellow.  If anyone has a screenshot from those days, that would be really cool to see.  The "Blueboarders" have taken a lot of heat from other boards and folks over the years, but when the board first started, it was relatively small and a neat way to feel like you had exclusive access to communicate with Brian.

im with petsoundsnola, the blueboard was a great place in the day, they really screwed up with the new format.  It was great too before facebook and all that crap, it was really the only online direct site to Brian.  I enjoyed it when Melinda came on also.  Interesting questions in that yahoo chat, I like the one about
Brian possibly doing 'sail on sailor'. He said 'no chance of that'. ha.

What's also funny is not only that the song eventually made it into the setlist, but that it made it into the setlist so soon after that comment. It was in the setlist less than a year later, on the summer 2001 tour.

I add it to saved pages. Of course, I can't see his face and maybe he didn't type the answers but I'd bet Brian smiled answering some questions and it seems he had fun. Several people said New Hampshire - good state based on the articles and NH doc.
Interesting he ignored the question "did you ever have Leon Russell as a
session musician during Pet Sounds or
before that?".

True point.
