Title: BB Tribute Albums Ranked Post by: yonderhillside on February 17, 2016, 05:37:48 PM I dunno about you but tribute albums always seem to give me a warm new perspective on any of my favorite artists. I know of several for The Beach Boys but only care for a handful of them. If you know of more include them but these are the selections I have:
1. Caroline Now!: The Music of Brian Wilson & The Beach Boys 2. Smiling Pets 3. Mojo Presents: Pet Sounds Revisited 4. Smile, Vibes & Harmony 5. Do It Again: A Tribute To Pet Sounds 6. Surf's Up: The Beach Boys South American Tribute 7. Some of the artist contributions listed make it sound kind of soft-rocky but I'll definitely take a look-see. Dunno if you've listened to these but most of the top few ones in the list are mostly indie-ish/neo-psychedelic-y bands. The Flaming Lips cover of "God Only Knows" and Olivia Tremor Control's "Do You Dig Worms?" are to die-for. As well as everything on Caroline Now!

Might have worked better with less of a 'smooth' jazz vibe. Jeffery Osborne's Wouldn't It Be Nice is excruciating. Stars and Stripes belongs largely in the sh*t category too, but I'll except Warmth of the Sun, Caroline, No (and maybe 409) and the unused In My Room. I mean, Toby fucking Keith with Be True to your School...

The All-Star tribute DVD *is* a little soft-rock -- it's very oriented to 70s AOR middlebrow acts, and if you're more into the Elephant 6 style stuff (as I am) you may find it a little bland. That said, it's worth it for Paul Simon's lovely reworking of Surfer Girl, and Brian's band back everyone so it never enters too far into Joe Thomas territory.
