Title: If the Beach Boys were dogs...
Post by: Uncle Jesse on January 29, 2016, 12:11:39 PM
If each of The Beach Boys were a breed of dog, what would each one be?

Carl would probably be a lab; intelligent, obedient, loyal.  Brian would probably be something like a border collie; absolute genius but with destructive tendencies.  Bruce is obviously a poodle.

Thoughts?

Myke luHv, though not a purebread by any means, would be defined as part Doberman, in that he traditionally and instinctively goes for the jugular.

Not really an answer to your specific question, but here are the Beach Bowsers at Chuck E. Cheese in 1989. My recollection is that the "act" was featured for roughly 10 years or so.

Bruce is obviously a poodle.

Trying and failing to find online that illustration from Millward's book  which depicts the Boys as animals wading through long grass… Broan's a bear, Al's a duck, Bruce might be a raccoon … I think.

Anyone able to provide a link here?

Holy cow! I find this picture very disturbing...
1) When was it drawn, and why are Dennis and Carl's eyes blacked out? That is very hard to look at.
2) What is up with the flying animals? What is the duck pointing at?
3) Are they on patrol? Like in the Vietnam war?
4) Zoom in on bear Brian's face. That is terrifying.

What the heck is the story behind this picture?

And, I didn't even mention Duck Jardine's face... because that is just too disturbing.

Fabulous, many thanks Allllan; I knew one of the Boys was depicted as a dog but couldn't recall which (just as I couldn't remember the book's author correctly),

(Thanks also for the spec on the turntable you used to capture the image… I didn't know they did that too ;) )

Easy.

All they would have left us with is the ending segment of 'Caroline, No'.

We would have been salivating over the 5CD box of The Louie And Banana Sessions, and countless cover versions by other canine groups, like the 5 Labradors, the Jack Russell Rousers, and the Poodle Pups.

And there would have been that mythical Lassie Project, unfinished but reconstructed a gazillion times by true aficionados.

And we'd all have been trainspotters gone totally bonkers, with an frighteningly detailed knowledge of the sounds of locomotives in action.

My two cents. I'll get me coat then.

And all The Beatles would have left us with after that is the ending segment of "Good Morning Good Morning". ;D

Yup. And a new and highly adventurous road in popular music definitely would have been opened.

Alas, history decided differently, and now we're stuck with Kenny G. forever.

Amazing. I will now forever think of Al Jardine as a duck.
Brian going fishing for ideas while the others are on tour in the tall grasses and flora.
What if the four ducks in the sky were The Beatles

The Byrds, perhaps? At least they were "hip" enough to play Monterey (to say nothing of being "Eight Miles High").

Years ago, I contacted the artist of that painting, George Chastain, and he was very nice in replying.  He remembered the painting, which he had been commissioned to do for the book (along with a bunch of other artists), "The Beach Boys" that came out in the late '70's.   He had since sold the painting, which he stated he regretted, and that initially it was one of the band themselves who wished to purchase it, he recalled it being either Carl or maybe Bruce.     Ultimately it was sold to someone else.   I cannot find this email exchange I had with him on my computer, but it was within the last 5 to 7 years.  He is still with us, I believe and may be open to contact and questions.
A quick search brought the following links:

Just looking through the Byron Preiss book that has that 'Country Air' cartoon. As AGD said, some great artwork, some of which could be a discussion in themselves. Any chance you could do some more Alan?

ie 'When I Grow Up To Be A Man' drawing by a Ralph Reese. Dennis going for a woman's chest, Al with a gun. Also 'Fun,Fun,Fun' by a Harvey Kurtzman. A blonde driving off with 5 obviously, shall we say 'satisfied' naked guys beside 5 limp surfboards. Brilliant!

I did find a couple from the book....

'Long Promised Road' and 'All This Is That'.

Yep! :)  I'm not sure why a contemplative Denny would be musing in front of a painting of Mike on the beach getting a massage from a gaggle of tiny beach babes.  Unless it's a "reimagining" of some other famous image (ie, looks like a different picture with Denny's head pasted in later).

And how about the ludicrous Surfer Girl air-brush pic - that would go well on a Panel Van down Frankston way.

Funny thing is I seem to recall a picture of Mike in just that setting. His pool, but don't remember where.

One that does not need an explanation is '15 Big Ones'. The group singing on a street corner.

If you do get the time, some of those shots would be appreciated by those here who have not seen them I'm sure.
