Title: Raspberries Disc
Post by: Domo Arigato on January 06, 2006, 08:45:17 AM

OK, here's the deal. I'm making an audio CD for someone who is open-minded but has never really heard anything by the Raspberries. The disc can't exceed 75 minutes. What songs and running-order would you suggest? Here's my initial list/running order.

Oh yeah, I'm going to title it "Two-Straw Milkshake"  8)

Overnight Sensation
I'm a Rocker
Drivin' Around
Come Around And See Me
Ecstasy
I Wanna Be with You
Rose-colored glasses
Let's Pretend
I Don't Know What I Want
Party's Over
I Saw the Light
Starting Over
Don't Want To Say Goodbye
Nobody Knows
I Reach For The Light
Hard To Get Over A Heartbreak
Go All the Way

You're missing their single greatest song, Tonight. And you HAVE to include Play On. I'd substitute I Can Remember for Party's Over and Rose-Colored Glasses.

Thanks! I'll heed your suggestions!

Well, I think I'll keep Rose-Colored Glasses though - just love the faux psychedelia on that one.

Yeah, I'm in the minority on Rose-Colored being a bit overrated. It's just too precious for me. But all other 'Berries fans swear by it, so don't listen to me!

I've got me Fresh Raspberries (this is their best Ian?)...

Something about the first track, I Wanna Be With You was really frustrating me...  Great tune, but the melody of "We wouldn't have to be worried tonight" sounded so familiar... I couldn't think of it, until, as soon as I clicked "Reply", I remembered what it was...  "Where in the world will I be?" from The Bee Gees "World"...

f***, I just love that melody... that chord progression, whatever it is...  Pumps me full of melancholy that.  Love it.

It's a good one. I think their best is the recent Greatest Hits CD. Their albums all have a certain amount of filler.

So, did your CD make a fan of your open-minded friend? "Let's Pretend," to me, remains one perfectly crafted and performed confection of PowerPop. Love how Eric Carmen goes from plaintive and sweet to that growley (Is that a word?) explosion of
hormones. Don't think that the Raspberries are given their due today as musicians, vocalists, performers. Never hear them on  classic rock or oldies stations.

Dig the energy on this performance of "Go All the Way"

Your thread got me reflecting on the Raspberries, Eric Carmen in particular. He really is an outstanding singer/songwriter
who seems to be forgotten. He can actually compose, not simply write a tune,  is a better-than-average lyricist, and my God,
the man can sing, whether rocking out full throttle or giving us a delicate, soulful ballad. I just caught this on YouTube, produced for Arista's anniversary celebration. I must say that Eric has changed since his early days, more so than simply aging. The hair, plastic surgery, and make-up leave me a bit confused. But oh, what talent...
