Title: Re: Lucy Jones by Brian Wilson and Stephen Kalinich Post by: Wrightfan on November 09, 2015, 04:47:39 PM Honestly might be my new least favorite song with Brian involvement. Just sounded like a generic do wop song.
It is interesting though as it's kind off a sneak peak of the 15 Big Ones era. Title: Re: Lucy Jones by Brian Wilson and Stephen Kalinich Post by: The_Beach on November 09, 2015, 04:51:06 PM Holy smokes OH YEAH!!! now if we could only get some offical releases of all the unreleased material of the beach boys! Some awesome some im sure not the best but all a nice creative twist by Brain Wilson of his forever expanding creativity of music! Title: Re: Lucy Jones by Brian Wilson and Stephen Kalinich Post by: Cabinessenceking on November 09, 2015, 05:26:18 PM Pretty sh*t effort really.
Can't blame the sessions when all Brian came up with was this, ding dang and rework of Battlehymn of the republic. There's nothing to suggest the same man wrote Marcella or Sail On Sailor a year before. I was really hoping and looking forward to hearing this, but now its omission from everything so far seems perfectly justifiable. Goin To The Beach derserved a slot on MiC over this junk doo-wop ditty. Makes me fear the same applies to the rest of the mythical Bedroom tapes. And I thought the Cal Feelin and ITBOMM demos were surey just the peak of the iceberg. Title: Re: Lucy Jones by Brian Wilson and Stephen Kalinich Post by: kwebb on November 09, 2015, 09:29:04 PM My expectations were pretty low to begin with, so I thought the song was alright.
Title: Re: Lucy Jones by Brian Wilson and Stephen Kalinich Post by: Micha on November 09, 2015, 09:54:29 PM I think it's very much like the material recorded for Love You, just without the synths and the minimised drums.
Going off topic for a moment here: There's a nice fan video for Cabin Essence recommended there: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u38toJ2HhqA - which mix is that? Sounds a bit unfamiliar to my ears. Title: Re: Lucy Jones by Brian Wilson and Stephen Kalinich Post by: Jay on November 09, 2015, 11:20:29 PM It almost sounds like a rewrite of Walkin'.
Title: Re: Lucy Jones by Brian Wilson and Stephen Kalinich Post by: Andrew G. Doe on November 10, 2015, 12:20:07 AM Recorded at the same session as "California Feelin'", 11/12/74.
Title: Re: Lucy Jones by Brian Wilson and Stephen Kalinich Post by: shangaijoeBB on November 10, 2015, 06:21:35 AM It's a good song but nothing special really. It really made me think of that one (maybe a remake?): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MEU8E1w3nlU
Title: Re: Lucy Jones by Brian Wilson and Stephen Kalinich Post by: Douchepool on November 10, 2015, 06:31:49 AM Well, the stories of this track being awful have certainly been proven in spades upon listening to this clearly hidden "gem." Shiiiiiiiiit...bloody awful indeed.

Title: Re: Lucy Jones by Brian Wilson and Stephen Kalinich Post by: frightfulhog on November 10, 2015, 11:30:57 AM Definitely in my top 10 worst BW tracks, but I ain't complaining.
Title: Re: Lucy Jones by Brian Wilson and Stephen Kalinich Post by: pixletwin on November 10, 2015, 11:40:21 AM Finally get to hear Lucy Jones, from the fabled Nov. 74 session. Brian's voice was still there.. shame the song is crap. :lol
Title: Re: Lucy Jones by Brian Wilson and Stephen Kalinich Post by: Dudd on November 10, 2015, 12:56:15 PM Yes, not one for the compilations. Interesting listen anyway.
Title: Re: Lucy Jones by Brian Wilson and Stephen Kalinich Post by: Jim V. on November 10, 2015, 01:21:25 PM So I've listened to it a few times, and I must admit, I still hardly hear Brian. Could somebody point out to me where he is on this track?
Also, it's probably him on piano, right? Do we know if this is a Wilson/Kalinich song or just a Kalinich song? Title: Re: Lucy Jones by Brian Wilson and Stephen Kalinich Post by: The Shift on November 10, 2015, 01:29:36 PM It's a good song but nothing special really. It really made me think of that one (maybe a remake?): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MEU8E1w3nlU Yup, that song came to mind here too, as did this: http://youtu.be/xtLTvYzqJrA Quite likin Lucy Jones though, esp the backing vocals. Title: Re: Lucy Jones by Brian Wilson and Stephen Kalinich Post by: Steve Latshaw on November 10, 2015, 01:40:23 PM I'm enjoying this as well... goofy, to be sure (melody reminds me a little bit of Bony Moronie). Would have been an interesting album in 75...

I thought of Walkin' when i listened the first few times.

Title: Re: Lucy Jones by Brian Wilson and Stephen Kalinich Post by: LeeDempsey on November 11, 2015, 07:56:17 AM Ah ha, so now I believe that in "the "California Feeling" demo, when Brian does his melodramatic voice and shouts "California Feeling -- CAN'T YOU FEEL IT?," he's imitating / poking fun at Stephen... Makes sense to me now.

No you wouldn't. ;) Title: Re: Lucy Jones by Brian Wilson and Stephen Kalinich Post by: The_Beach on November 11, 2015, 07:13:05 PM I am sure the sound much better and clean if this was a finished track and not just a first time around piano demo! The lyrics are a little odd! But alot of Brians lyrics were odd! especially some adult child stuff
Title: Re: Lucy Jones by Brian Wilson and Stephen Kalinich Post by: Douchepool on November 11, 2015, 07:31:01 PM The crazy part is that those are Steve Kalinich's lyrics, not Brian's. :lol
I respect what the man did for Dennis and to a lesser extent Brian's material but listening to both this track and his A World of Peace Must Come record...all that comes to mind is eden ahbez. He's like another eden ahbez, although sadly (or not, depending on your viewpoint) without the reputation and snickers from the strange music revivalists. He's like another eden ahbez, although sadly (or not, depending on your viewpoint) without the reputation and snickers from the strange music revivalists. I really like A World of Peace Must Come. Stevie is a great poet. I think, aside from being a super guy, that the artistic appeal for Brian and Dennis working with him is that he has a way with purity and innocence in his poems and lyrics. "Lucy Jones" is just silly fun. "The skies were golden yellow The electricity of what feels like God was in the air I had a real connection with the Universe And it felt so good and full of color The world was opening up" Title: Re: Lucy Jones by Brian Wilson and Stephen Kalinich Post by: Douchepool on November 12, 2015, 07:48:40 AM I like the album as well, but just like Eden's Island I have to be in the right mood for it.
Title: Re: Lucy Jones by Brian Wilson and Stephen Kalinich Post by: The_Beach on November 12, 2015, 09:38:37 PM Well Lucy Jones is 41 years old today! Toke forever for us to finally hear it! So what do we all have left from the 11-12-74 sessions 41 year old to hear yet>?
