Title: Brian Wilson's favorite albums
Post by: sea of tunes on September 01, 2015, 03:44:42 PM

Does anyone happen to have this interview with Brian (the audio)? It appears to no longer be on SoundCloud. I remember there was a Pet Sounds 40th Anniversary blog and there was an interview with Brian then (it might be the same interview) and Brian listed the following as his favorite albums:

Frank Sinatra "Songs For Swingin' Lovers"
Phil Spector "A Christmas Gift For You"
The Beatles "Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band"
Randy Newman "Sail Away"
Pink Floyd "Dark Side of the Moon"

Any help tracking the audio down is appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Dark Side of the Moon surprises me! I love it, but didn't picture that as one Brian would choose

Maybe elements of its subject matter appeal to him, rather than the music. The title, for one thing...

Hey, John. 8) I dunno. There are a few seriously sweet vocal harmonies on that album (less ambitious than what Brian is known for, of course) that probably would've caught his ear. I know who I think of when I hear them and I can't help wonder if they weren't the inspiration for such. :) (Possible... Seems like I read somewhere that somebody in Floyd at the time was a fan of the Pet Sounds album. Unfortunately, I can't remember and provide the source of that so I may be confusing it with something said by someone else entirely.)

I can confirm that DSOTM is one of his faves, read it in a mag interview, Q or Mojo or something like that. I too was surprised, but maybe it's just the production and the sound effects that grab him.

That would be Dave Gilmour, yep a big BB's/Brian fan - He was sat in front of me (with one of his kid's) for 2 of the initial SMiLE shows at the RFH London, and he also had the honor of introducing Brian into the UK Music N Roll Hall Of Fame.
Also saw him at the RFH bar before one of the TLOS Shows.

Cool.

Looking forward to Gilmour's new album.

Wonder if Brian digs Floyd's album The Wall? After all, his old buddy Bruce did some backing vocals for it, along with Dennis's old friend Daryl Dragon's ex-wife, Toni Tenille?

Tenuous, moi?  ;D

He mentions Switched-On Bach from time to time, which of course makes perfect sense considering his own synth work in the 1970s. Listen to the little melody playing in the background throughout the 2nd verse of I Wanna Pick You Up, that sounds like something straight off a Wendy Carlos record. Would love to hear the backing track to that song! I'll Bet he's Nice is a similar case.

How about Brian's Bach? ;D

Obvious contenders for inclusion are the title track, "Bach Home", "In The Bach Of My Mind", "Fall Breaks And Bach To Winter (Johann Sebastian Symphony)", "Getcha Bach" and (how could you leave it out?) "Lady Lynda" (as a hidden track).

I reckon these would make a great lineup for Brian's Moog album----in a new, all-synth arrangement, of course:

How She Boogalooed It
Don't Talk
Car Crazy Cutie
We'll Run Away
Misirlou
Whistle In
Summertime Blues
Anna Lee, The Healer
Boogie Woodie
Tell Me Why
Louie Louie
Good To My Baby
