If I heard somebody singing that song in public, I'd probably call the police too.  I mean there's public decency laws in this country

Nobody singing Barbara Ann like that can ever truly be called... innocent.

We don't know what the guy said to the cop for him to react like that. If he threatened him ie "I have a gun, and I'll use it" then you take him down. Period.

"'Barbara Ann' Brings Jail Time" - as well it should in some instances.  I think we can build a case here...

Or was it "I know the words to the song and I'm gonna keep on singin' it."? ;)

The thing is...Barabara Ann was and IS 'filler'.  It came from the stop-gap measure album 'Party'.  Many of *US* think of it as 2 minutes and some-odd seconds of pure unadulterated 'poop'.  [and it is]  But the casual fans 'know' it and 'love it' and they are the majority at every show.  AND I'd wager...the absolute T O P song at every show in terms of 'fan' appreciation?  By a country mile...it's 'Kokomo'.  It's the most recent major hit.  More people know it and lived it than any other song performed.

Too bad that Capitol forced Brian to make the Party 'thingy'.  But they did.  And he did.  And Barbara Ann is a fact.

Yeah what were they thinking???  Too bad it was such a lousy seller and never got any airplay, thus nearly killing the BBs' career...  ::)

Capitol didn't force Brian to make the Party album; he loves comedy. He made it because he knew he could put it together quickly and satisfy Capitol's lust for more product.
The Capitol execs would have never thought of an album like this is a gazillion years

I just realized he was singing it in the wrong key.

Well no actually.  'They' were demonstratively pissed and pushing for product.  For a guy [Brian] and a group [the Beach Boys] who had turned out 2 or 3 albums a year virtually 'on demand'...Pet Sounds was taking WAY to freaking long and in order to get 'them' off his back Brian hurriedly tossed together Party to hold Capitol at bay.

It was all just a happy accident for all concerned.  Capitol kept the wheels turning on their annual Beach Boys related 'income'.  Brian bought time to finish Pet Sounnds the way he wanted it to be done.  The group had more hits.  'They didn't tell him to specifically record Party.  They told him to release 'the' album.  In fact they pretty much forced him to do it.   And?   He/The Beach Boys [and Dean] did.  And Barbara Ann is a fact.

Thank god it was only 'Barbara Ann'. There's no telling what would happen if it was 'Kokomo'! ;D

When I was a kid, I always hated the song.  Then I heard the original, and figured out that it was even WORSE than the Beach Boys version.  It's the most astonishing thing ever, the song's always been horrible, from inception, but yet made all kinds of money for about 4 different bands.  Craziness!
