Title: Tom Jones/Jimmy Page. Your opinions please.
Post by: mel91679 on July 19, 2015, 10:31:28 PM
Hey again
Tom Jones was the very first  person I ever started buying records of starting back in 1969. I loved his tv show back then. Later on I got into more of the hard rock including Led Zeppelin. Jimmy Page said in his photo biography that he played on many sessions back then including Tom's sessions. No, he did not play on It's Not Unusual. This came from the man's own mouth and also, Tom's original drummer Chris Slade (now in AC/DC) said he thinks Big Jim Sullivan played on it. I just wish some interviewer would ask Mr. Page exactly which of Tom's songs he did play on as Tom's very early albums really rocked and Mr. Page probably played on several songs before he joined the Yardbirds in 1966. If any of you have the time, I will list some songs that sound like it could be Mr. Page playing on. You can find these on youtube so check out these Tom Jones songs and give me your opinions. Here goes: Worried Man, What's New Pussycat, Little By Little, Wont You Give Him One More Chance, Bama Lama Bama Loo, The Rose, Promise Her Anything, Weeping Annleah. Hope to hear from some of you. Thanks.
Joe

Does Mr. Page also claim to have played on Kinks sessions?

Hey Alan
The Running Bear song was pretty good as a cover version. One of the best that Tom did was You'll Never Walk Alone from his tv show. I am sure that's on youtube. Hate to disappoint but I believe the guitar on She's A Lady was done by Big Jim Sullivan. If he couldnt do a session in the early 60's Little Jimmy Page did it. Sullivan was the guitarist that you saw on Tom's tv show. Mr. Page would have only done sessions for a lot of the big artists back then before he joined the Yardbirds in the summer of 1966. But he did do a Joe Cocker session back after he formed Zep didnt he?

Does Mr. Page also claim to have played on Kinks sessions?

He does uncredited work on some of the tracks off the first album.

Jimmy Page did play the guitar on She's a Lady.

You kidding? "She's A Lady" was 1971 or so. You figure Page did Tom Jones sessions by that time?

Tom Jones is a powerful singer who made some good records. Saw him in concert when I was 11 years old. Good show from what I remember.

Big Jim Sullivan & Little Jimmy Page  monopolised UK Guitar Sessions from 1963 until 1967.
As for the Kinks Sessions Dave Davies played the frantic breaks on YRGM etc while Jimmy Page's contribution was very small.
Jimmy played the guitar break on Joe Cocker's "With A Little Help From My Friends" - Big Jim played on Joe's first record - "I'll Cry Instead".
Which brings us to Tom Jones - Big Jim Sullivan was Tom's guitarist from 1969 for five years and so he played on all of Tom's records in that period.
Jimmy Page would have played on Tom's early records along with Big Jim Sullivan but it was Joe Moretti who played the guitar break on "It's Not Unusual".
