Title: David Marks - Live on Sunset (New Live Album)
Post by: alanjames on July 08, 2015, 03:42:54 PM
I don't know if it's already here (sorry if I'm repeating it), but there's a new live album from David Marks: Live on Sunset, by MsMusic Productions.
This is the concert that he performed in 2010 on the old Western Recorders Studio 1.
It's available from the label website:

I'll never understand the appeal of live albums.  I think they have their place, but give me a proper studio album over a live album any day.

EDIT: I'll make it clear that I prefer a live album over no album at all.  I just think they're kind of a cop-out.  They should be cheaper on iTunes than a studio album, and it annoys me to when I see a live album touted like a real album.  Some are excellent (In Concert, anybody?).  Some are downright horrible (C50).  Most aren't worth writing home about.  Maybe this Dave album is awesome.  I'll never know because the mid-90's era website it's sold on doesn't even include samples.

Man, I must be having a bad day.  Sorry, Dave.

There was a time when a live album was a big deal.  This was before it was so easy to go online and view live material.  Also, with bands not releasing albums as much as bands did in the 60s and 70s, live albums have become stop gap releases.  Some bands also have too many, to the point where a live album is released after every tour.

The 1970s was really the golden age of live albums

The Who - Live at Leeds
Kiss - Alive
UFO - Strangers in the Night
Cheap Trick - Live at Buddakon
Beach Boys - In Concert
Rush - All the Worlds a Stage
Blue Oyster Cult - On Your Feet or On Your Knees
Deep Purple - Made in Japan
Rainbow - On Stage
Scorpions - Tokyo Tapes
Judas Priest - Unleashed in the East
Eric Clapton - Rainbow Concert
Queen - Live Killers

Those are some great live albums just off the top of my head from the 70s.

But, now, it's not quite the same.   There's no way I could sit here and name even five great live albums from 1980 onward off the top of my head.

The Professor loves this David Mark's album. I wish they had done Summertime Blues for the 50th--way way better than the old album version. Your Summer Dream as Bossa? Brilliant. Beaches in Mind can learn a think or two from this album--a great chance to let Dave rib, and JT or whoever was producing failed to get the great DM sound we hear on this album on to Radio

Fantastic--listening non-stop--bluesy, smart, warm, deep, lovely, intimate--just great.

Agree with the Prof… this is actually a pretty solid live album. I like it and am glad untracked it down from amazon com not amazon uk.

I'm glad people are starting to find and hear David's live in the studio album. It has some great guests including the late John Walker , the man who taught David and Carl to play guitar in his last recording.

BTW the album was recorded in Western (East-West ) Studio 1 just across the hall from Studio 3 where most of the B. Boys hits were recorded.

And it is on Ms Music the same table that just released "California Feeling 2", the songs of Stephen Kalinich with a great all star cast......check it out here:

Who is this secret honored guest?  The Professor does not know.

I have that California Feeling album, what a gem, given me and signed by Steven himself, a man of endless energy and passion--what a gift, so much hope, so much power in music and poetry.  Watching him listen to Be Still and hearing him discuss the brilliance and soulfulness of Dennis in adapting his lyrics is a highlight of my academic career.

Dave can rock--all the more reason for his playing with BW (and all the boys) on any album of rock covers.

I was referring to the new just released Ca. Feeling 2 which includes tracks by Carl B. Wilson, Neil Innes Jon Tiven, Mary Wilson and P.F Sloan among others.

Not sure what "mystery guest" you are referring to on David's album. Please explain........

Yes, I am in the dark here but sometimes so one simply doesn't know who everyone is here please pardon my ignorance in this regard. Concerning the album, now I see that I was thinking of the early one and I did not even open up that link because I thought I already had it. California feeling 3 sounds quite wonderful. And I will look for that too. Thank you both.

Snicker! And a fabulous job you did playing him. Those sets were pure studio geek porn, fabulous attention to detail!

Couldn't they have just... left 'em up like that?

"Yeah but the next client wants to use ProTools."

"f*** it."

Gotta check out that album, Neil Innes is a hero!

You know, I'm really not good with words and letters but I was able to research that and figure it out. It must be our Grammy Award winning producer who is not likely to be nominated for an Oscar as best supporting actor but he certainly had a wonderful role in love and mercy. Sorry for the confusion mark and so nice to hear from you. In fact, at these lectures at school that I am discussing where Steve and Alan come to visit, you should certainly join in some time. The students would love to hear your wonderful perspective .

Thank you for your scholarly, historical commitment to the beach boys and all that you've given us. But back to the issue of Dave, I think that album shows just how remarkably powerful he is as an artist and what he could contribute to a new, creative, fresh, and powerful Beach Boys album. Dave's work on Brian's album is absolutely wonderful, but still its very refined and limited to 2 songs. A whole album of Dave rocking out as the lead guitarist of The Beach Boys on an album covers or new rock and roll song, produced by Mark and Alan, if I may extend my fantasy to the limit, would be just wonderful.

Yes indeed, welcome Mark. I love your work. Thank you.
Dave's new release doesn't seem to be available on Apple. Wish that it was.

is this the only thread on this great album?

I tried to start one a couple weeks back (before David had the health scare), but there was little response. This has been playing in my car since I got it. Great album that deserves more attention.

Might I suggest that the general lack of response may have something to do with the fact that this is a live (not studio) album from an obscure label (to most) that is apparently only available on a website that looks like it hasn't had a design update since about 1998.  Oh, and no track samples.

every track on this record is a gem of a different sort: Farmer's Daughter as a sweet duet with Marilyn!  Dave's own "have you ever been duped," an old school blues rocker and an autobiographical tune of adventure and woe (makes you think of Dennis too). The Hawaii arrangement is inventive and different from the BB version--I could go on. Can't wait to head to the library today with the record playing in the car.

Um... I said the label was obscure.

I saw the Amazon listing too, with no digital version.  Or even a track listing.  Just the 'only available from third-party sellers' clause.

If I didn't trust the Professor's judgment and didn't really like David, I wouldn't give this CD even a first thought.  It's almost like they just don't want to sell the CD.

Yeah, I was looking for track listings too on amazon and that label's website, because I believe a song that I produced is on the California Feeling 2 album, but you'd have no way of knowing.  I don't mean that from an ego standpoint, I'd just like to know and verify the track is there so I might be able to help steer people towards it.  I can forgive not having sound clips, but not having a track listing at all is a bit weird.  Hopefully that's something that will be addressed at some point.

I bought the original California Feeling CD four years ago and it's one of many CDs still in my "Need to listen to" pile. Thanks to this thread it'll be in the car for an extended drive tomorrow.

Here's a scan of the back cover, featuring 23 tracks:

Edit: Just realized the discussion is more on the Calif Feeling 2 album, and of course David Marks' Live on Sunset, both of which are on my "To be purchased" list. Hopefully it won't be four years before I get around to listening.

Gosh, I don't know.  I produced the track;  I'm on it.  I wasn't really involved with the album per se other than giving up the track for remixing by Mark, so I guess I can't kick that they truncated the band name.  But, sheesh, again, not so much an ego thing, it just isn't going to help sell the disc if you don't have the full (known) name of the band on there.

But then, it came out in 2011, and I just realized it myself!  So I guess I can't complain.

Oh I see..."intro."  Man, my name got left off two tracks.  Now that hurts, lol!

Anyway, thanks!  The band has done some pretty good work under the full name "Adam Marsland's Chaos Band," which you wouldn't know to look for from how it's written here!
