Title: Did Brian + Mike invent the rap battle with "Cassius" Love vs. "Sonny" Wilson"?
Post by: CenturyDeprived on June 16, 2015, 07:26:25 PM
It almost would seem so. Serious question! Is there any earlier recording by any group which could qualify as a spoken word degradation battle between two musicians?

I really want to see this song performed live. Has anyone ever attempted it?

"Say Man" Bo Diddley (1958 or 59)  Bo versus Jerome- this is closer to the first rap record IMO.

But I do see your point, and as LP filler goes I'll take "Cassius vs Sonny" over "Revolution 9" most of the time.

I stand corrected! That is a pretty awesome find.

I think the Boys maybe are the first white dudes to do a spoken word derogatory "rap" battle? This track is just so weird in terms of how things went down between the two. I wonder when the last time was that either of them listened to it.

Could Mike be convinced to perform it at an M&B show, with Foskett as Sonny Wilson?
