Title: Re: The Fendertones raise the bar with \ Post by: ppk700 on June 14, 2015, 09:54:56 AM Hey, that was fantastic!
And some quality headphone-adjusting in there from the man who writes the songs ;) Really though, kudos to those guys for that. Title: Re: The Fendertones raise the bar with \ Post by: FatherOfTheMan Sr101 on June 14, 2015, 09:57:14 AM Mike Love singing Surf's Up with fans in 2015.
this is it. we're full circle. Title: Re: The Fendertones raise the bar with \ Post by: filledeplage on June 14, 2015, 10:11:32 AM Mike Love singing Surf's Up with fans in 2015. Should surprise no one. The BB's did the background vocals for the Surf's Up album, and shared lead by Carl, Brian and Al. And on the college/university/ other venue setlists. Brilliant. this is it. we're full circle. :thewilsons Title: Re: The Fendertones raise the bar with \ Post by: Marty Castillo on June 14, 2015, 10:16:16 AM Very impressive!

Title: Re: The Fendertones raise the bar with \ Post by: Robbie Mac on June 14, 2015, 10:22:20 AM That was the best thing I have seen on this board in years.
Title: Re: The Fendertones raise the bar with \ Post by: Autotune on June 14, 2015, 10:28:25 AM Lovely and brilliant. Congrats to those guys. BTW, you can't beat Mike Love singing those bass vocals. There's plenty of singers with a louder voice, or more adept technically or whatever; but none sounds nearly as human yet cool and expressive as he does in that range.

Title: Re: The Fendertones raise the bar with \ Post by: bgas on June 14, 2015, 10:42:05 AM Where'd they get the footage of Mike singing? He doesn't seem to be in the same room with the rest of them, or even in the same house
Title: Re: The Fendertones raise the bar with \ Post by: Custom Machine on June 14, 2015, 10:52:43 AM Uh-may-zing! Kudos Fendertones!
Title: Re: The Fendertones raise the bar with \ Post by: Edwin Herder on June 14, 2015, 10:55:12 AM Thanks for the nice words, everybody. To answer the question of where the footage of Mike came from, we went to him... it was hard to coordinate all of the schedules. Mike was recorded in a hotel room on Long Island, and the rest of the Beach Boys came to my living room in Pennsylvania. Darian recorded in two locations in LA, and Probyn recorded in LA as well. Scott sang his lead vocal in Florida, and the Stockholm Strings were recorded in Sweden.

Title: Re: The Fendertones raise the bar with \ Post by: NateRuvin on June 14, 2015, 12:50:53 PM That was the best youtube video I've ever seen. It seems like there is now peace between the camps. Perhaps another reunion? With members of the Fendertones?
Maybe I'm being too hopeful… The NPP tour will most likely be Brian's last, but imagine if Mike, Bruce, Al, Dave, Blondie, and Ricky toured with the member of Brian's band, Mike's band, and members of the fendertones! Title: Re: The Fendertones raise the bar with \ Post by: JK on June 14, 2015, 01:05:54 PM Brings tears to the eyes----the rest has all been said...
Title: Re: The Fendertones raise the bar with \ Post by: lastofmykind on June 14, 2015, 01:06:43 PM So where are all the Mike haters at on this one? 2 members of Brian's band appearing in a Fendertones video with members of the touring Beach Boys? For me in my opinion that video is hands down the best cover on YouTube of any Beach Boys song. This video shows that its "all about the music" that's why we are here. First class vocals by all, first class musicianship by all, first class attention to all the minutia of Surfs Up. I agree with the previous sentiments this is hands down the best recreation of a BB song my hears have ever heard. Keep up the excellent work Fendertones!
Title: Re: The Fendertones raise the bar with \ Post by: ontor pertawst on June 14, 2015, 01:16:03 PM Nice work, but I'm insane and still prefer their take on "The Monkey's Uncle." Man I love that song! I would probably explode if I heard that live.
But good job, people. Excellent job weaving it all together, Edwin. The strings were a superb touch. Dedicated musicians doing their best on some of the greatest music ever composed has to make ya grin. So enough with the Cousin-based drama on this thread at least! Title: Re: The Fendertones raise the bar with \ Post by: Mendota Heights on June 14, 2015, 01:23:24 PM So where are all the Mike haters at on this one? Let's not make this another BW vs ML thread, please. Instead let's discuss The Fendertones and their rendition of SU. I was very surprised to see all these big names in the video and it is evident The Fendertones' star is rising. They put a lot of time and effort into covering one of Brian's very best songs and the end result is something out of the ordinary. Thumbs up to all the talented musicians who made this possible. Keep the songs coming, Fendertones. I so wish I could sing like Darian. :drunks Title: Re: The Fendertones raise the bar with \ Post by: ontor pertawst on June 14, 2015, 01:27:21 PM Damn straight!
Title: Re: The Fendertones raise the bar with \ Post by: Radfahrer on June 14, 2015, 01:31:38 PM Because of moments like this I'm a Beach Boys fan. Nothing is impossible. In any and every possible way... This time in a good way.

Title: Re: The Fendertones raise the bar with \ Post by: mikeddonn on June 14, 2015, 03:01:32 PM If Darian can sing it why can't Brian's band do it on the tour?
Also, when the touch passes someday in the future the Fendertones with the support cast from this recording would get my vote! Title: Re: The Fendertones raise the bar with \ Post by: GhostyTMRS on June 14, 2015, 03:33:58 PM This is the best cover/re-creation of a classic Beach Boys track I've ever heard in my life.
Title: Re: The Fendertones raise the bar with \ Post by: SurfJohnB on June 14, 2015, 03:36:13 PM Incredible indeed. I almost fell out of my chair when I heard Mike's voice. Great reveal and great decision to hear him in there before seeing him. That moment of "is that? yes it is!" is perfect.
Title: Re: The Fendertones raise the bar with \ Post by: Kurosawa on June 14, 2015, 03:52:19 PM These guys never cease to amaze me. Seeing the great musicians from all three groups involved just makes it that much sweeter.
I'd love to hear any complete performances of All Summer Long, The Beach Boys Today!, Summer Days (And Summer Nights!), Pet Sounds or SMiLE! by this group. Title: Re: The Fendertones raise the bar with \ Post by: DennysDrums83 on June 14, 2015, 04:34:06 PM I really liked their video of Sloop John B with Scott and John. But THIS...wow. Truly amazing.
Title: Re: The Fendertones raise the bar with \ Post by: wantsomecorn on June 14, 2015, 04:51:24 PM Wow, that was really cool.
Props to everybody who worked on this, coordinating all those recordings across multiple states and continents must've been tough, but this is one of the best covers of any song I've ever seen. Title: Re: The Fendertones raise the bar with \ Post by: Generation42 on June 14, 2015, 05:01:14 PM A Great video of a beautiful cover.
And what a thrill to see Mike and Bruce appear there at the end. It all makes me wish (for maybe the millionth time) that the Beach Boys would have performed this number during the C50 tour. And who knows, maybe one day, while everyone is still here, the Boys can get together and do it (yet) again. And maybe even include "Surf's Up" in the set list this time. Title: Re: The Fendertones raise the bar with \ Post by: Marty Castillo on June 14, 2015, 05:12:32 PM Nice work, but I'm insane and still prefer their take on "The Monkey's Uncle." Great great job Edwin. Really nice touch seeing Anna and the strings too. Brilliant. Title: Re: The Fendertones raise the bar with \ Post by: Jim McShane on June 14, 2015, 05:55:57 PM If Darian can sing it why can't Brian's band do it on the tour? They have - many times. Why not anymore? I have no idea. Title: Re: The Fendertones raise the bar with \ Post by: The Cincinnati Kid on June 14, 2015, 06:00:41 PM If Darian can sing it why can't Brian's band do it on the tour? They have - many times. Why not anymore? I have no idea. It is too hard for Brian to sing it these days, if sources are to be believed. Title: Re: The Fendertones raise the bar with \ Post by: Shady on June 14, 2015, 06:02:53 PM Incredible
Title: Re: The Fendertones raise the bar with \ Post by: Gregg on June 14, 2015, 07:25:17 PM It's total badass-ness when that bass vocal enters. I did an aural double take. Then my first inclinations were confirmed when I saw Mike Love appear.
Masterful cover. And the amount of involvement from actual Brian and Beach Boys touring band members is unbelievable. Congrats and thank you! Title: Re: The Fendertones raise the bar with Post by: SMiLE-addict on June 14, 2015, 08:03:02 PM Wow, fantastic job!
But if I were to offer one criticism, the lead vocals on the fade seemed "in the background" too much. But maybe that was just the video. Title: Re: The Fendertones raise the bar with \ Post by: Cyncie on June 14, 2015, 08:24:24 PM So Awesome.
Title: Re: The Fendertones raise the bar with \ Post by: petsite on June 14, 2015, 10:25:27 PM The Mike version of the Beach Boys did doing Surf's Up on their recent tour of the UK.

Doe on June 14, 2015, 10:38:33 PM So where are all the Mike haters at on this one? Uncalled for. Just enjoy. And... To label this a cover is close to insulting: it's on a totally different plane. It's more than a cover, beyond even a re-imagining. Call it an invocation, if you will, an extended moment of transcendence. Time stopped, God smiled. Title: Re: The Fendertones raise the bar with \ Post by: Pretty Funky on June 14, 2015, 10:47:30 PM Nice clip.
Like us, they are all just a bunch of fanboys at the end of the day. Who here wouldn't want to join them? Title: Re: The Fendertones raise the bar with \ Post by: petsite on June 14, 2015, 11:58:18 PM I watched this early in the day, and I just watched it again. It's SO good.
And on a totally unrelated note (not really), boy I am missing Carl today. He would have loved this. Title: Re: The Fendertones raise the bar with \ Post by: D409 on June 15, 2015, 01:56:07 AM Fabulous - a real treat !
Title: Re: The Fendertones raise the bar with \ Post by: c-man on June 15, 2015, 04:05:00 AM It's an honor to use the same brand of headphones as these guys...heck, it's an honor to share the same universe as these guys!!
Title: Re: The Fendertones raise the bar with \ Post by: Cam Mott on June 15, 2015, 05:37:47 AM Another treat from the Fendertones.
PS, I also find "Monkey's Uncle" super hot, hotter than AF's version, which for a Mouseketeer is sayin' somethin'. (goes to lie down in the air conditioning) Title: Re: The Fendertones raise the bar with \ Post by: Douchepool on June 15, 2015, 07:37:09 AM This was AMAZING.
Title: Re: The Fendertones raise the bar with \ Post by: Gregg on June 15, 2015, 07:46:13 AM So where are all the Mike haters at on this one? Uncalled for. Just enjoy. And... Call it an invocation, if you will, an extended moment of transcendence. Time stopped, God smiled. So, I take it you like it. :-D But the only reason I wouldn't call it a cover is because some actual Beach Boys are involved, as it's pretty much a note for note duplication of the original arrangement. An extremely well-done duplication, mind you. Title: Re: The Fendertones raise the bar with \ Post by: Emdeeh on June 15, 2015, 10:30:26 AM That's a very, very nice version of "Surf's Up," complete with two actual Beach Boys, most of the BB Band, and several of the BW Band. Well done, all! :listening
Title: Re: The Fendertones raise the bar with \ Post by: keysarsoze001 on June 15, 2015, 11:57:43 AM This is gorgeous on a number of levels. Obviously the song itself is one of Brian's (if not THE) most extraordinary. The performances are rich, faithful, and nuanced. But most significantly, to see members of both bands plus members of a tribute band, including Bruce but ESPECIALLY Mike, collaborating this way to recreate one of the original band's finest moments...well, it's hard not to be moved by it.
On the one hand, nothing will ever replace the joy of the C50 shows. On the other, think how spoiled we are to have two bands with such talent hitting the road at the same time playing music we all love, and that they do it so well! Title: Re: The Fendertones raise the bar with \ Post by: Generation42 on June 15, 2015, 12:52:37 PM I see Mr. Desper is cited in the credits for this production, as well. :hat
Title: Re: The Fendertones raise the bar with \ Post by: Justin on June 15, 2015, 12:53:22 PM That was one of the best things to come along in the BB world in a while. Well done to those who put it together. Points for Mike for joining in as well....great surprise.
Title: Re: The Fendertones raise the bar with \ Post by: CenturyDeprived on June 15, 2015, 01:37:04 PM That was fantastic all around, and bravo to Mike and Bruce for being a part of it. Super.
Title: Re: The Fendertones raise the bar with \ Post by: petsite on June 15, 2015, 01:43:36 PM Truly wonderful. Just watched it again. Talked with some of the people involved last night and gave them a hats off. So wonderful. As I said yesterday, I think Carl would be proud of this presentation. He loved this song so much, which is why he pressured Brian to put it out. Thank goodness he did. Can you imagine if it hadn't. The Fendertones - sheesh, lets get these guys in that Pitch perfect franchise. They would kill all others involved. And since Elizabeth Banks is a producer and director of it, we have an "in". Just saying LOL!!!
Title: Re: The Fendertones raise the bar with \ Post by: mikeddonn on June 15, 2015, 01:51:34 PM If Darian can sing it why can't Brian's band do it on the tour? They have - many times. Why not anymore? I have no idea. Yes they have, many times, with Brian singing the verses with help from Jeff on the high parts. My point is if Brian doesn't feel up to singing it then let Darian. Brian could still sng the most of it (minus the high parts) if he wanted to but must choose not to. Title: Re: The Fendertones raise the bar with \ Post by: dombanzai on June 16, 2015, 09:31:20 AM A fabulous video, an unbelievable rendition. Everything about this song (and previous Fendertones recordings) is so precise and accurate. Aural magnificence and power to their elbow for recruiting Mike and Bruce, and spot on for them agreeing to be in it. How on earth did Edwin manage to persuade them to join in. Just one thing though, some of the more prominent members of The Fendertones seemed to be pushed to the side a little on this recording and it would be a shame to see them faded into the background in favour of the bigger, well-known names.
How on earth can they possibly top this? Or do they want to? Title: Re: The Fendertones raise the bar with \ Post by: Autotune on June 16, 2015, 09:57:19 AM Who are these Fendertones people anyway? Do they post here?
