I'd watch a video of a masturbating goat if it had previously unheard BW material in it.

Okay, maybe not, as that'd be baaaaaaaaad. I'd listen to it with my eyes closed :lol

I'd watch Oprah, though.

If Brian and his fans have to suffer through The View, then they could at least give the movie a proper wide release.

It's going to be sad on Monday when the box office numbers for the weekend show 'Spy' so far above 'Love and Mercy.'

Brian's previous appearance on "The View" promoting his Christmas album was one of the most painful ordeals I've ever had to witness. Luckily Melinda is with him this time to do most of the talking.

Watch the reactions and emotions that Whoopi Goldberg had on this show as Brian's music played and she was sitting a few feet away from him, and that's it. That's the heart of it. Deep, personal feelings that wash over you through the music, that's it.

I just watched this (after suffering through the first segment with an insufferable Fox News anchor). Brian's segment was sweet. He and Melinda were interviewed by Whoopi and one of the other hosts, and they played several BB songs for the audience. Whoopi said, "The one that saved me was In My Room," so they started playing that. The camera did a closeup on Brian's face while everyone was silently listening to the song, which was somewhat awkward, but when Whoopi spoke again, she had teared up and had trouble closing the segment, having become so emotional.

Brian got a standing ovation.

I must say , as much as I dislike the view, I was impressed with Whoopi's respect for Brian's music.
She even teared up at the end of the interview which almost made me go all verklempt.

Great segment!  They had the music all cued for Whoopie, who did a heartfelt job and whose response is similar to the rest of the world of BB fans...Bravo to all!

Saw a studio clip with Dano and the bobby pins in the piano soundboard for the sound effects of You Still Believe in Me...gave me a chill...

Can't wait to see the film... ;)

Love and Mercy, indeed!   :love

I had that exact same reaction after having the chance to say "thank you" in person to the man who created all of this music that meant so much. It's overwhelming, it's emotional, and it takes over. How Whoopi reacted on the show after saying "thank you for everything" is what it's all about, that's what makes all of it special. How fortunate we are.

Was I right, Ron, or was I right?  ;D  This was worth watching after all.

For me the way Whoopi Goldberg got choked up with emotion after she told Brian "thank you for everything" and as the various music played was the unspoken definition of what all of this means for a lot of us who have that connection to this man's music since we were kids. I can't define it, I can only say that there is no other music that gets to me in this way like that from the mind of Brian Wilson, and what you saw happen with Whoopi on TV today as the emotions took over was *it*, that shared reaction and emotion some of us have with the music and the guy that created it. One of the best things I've seen on TV, it got personal.

She never even got to explain what she was talking about, i'm not familiar with her Beach Boys story.

Brian's a very special human being, it's not really easy to put into words why but the fans get it.

more interviews like this would help more people 'get it'.  Seeing him sitting there like that while his beautiful voice, beautiful lyrics, and beautiful production fill the air around him just tells the whole story perfectly.

It probably would have been awkward at best. With this movie out he needs to be the best he can be. He is comfortable with Melinda by his side. She should be there. A good portion of the 80s material is through her eyes and experiences.

I'm curious as to why you hate it so much?

Seems to me that anything that makes Brian more comfortable in an interview situation, and therefore more likely to give better answers has got to be a plus

I never knew Whoopi was such a deep fan of Brian's work. I wonder if she's the reason for the song Happy Endings being on the soundtrack for her film The Telephone back in 1988? Does anyone know the story of that song? Was it written directly for the film? Maybe Whoopi requested it...

I find Melinda annoying in interviews and don't like when she pipes in and interrupts Brian and talks way more than he does. You're right that she plays a key part in Love & Mercy, yes.

However, I found the sections of Love & Mercy that focused on her to be much weaker than the parts of the film that took place in the 60s. A lot of that can't be blamed solely on her character (I thought Landy was energetically performed but given absolutely no depth and was pretty much a cartoon villain, Cusack struggled to portray Brian's mannerisms but did a good job imitating his voice). I wish the film had focused less on her.

She is in the film because she was an important person in Brian's life at that time. So much so that he sought her out after he became free of Landy. She and Gloria were the catalysts that got ball rolling and gave Carl the proof he needed for the courts that Landy was a scheister.

I guess that's why I thought we were done with this, right?

She is a major character in the movie, as well as Brian's wife. The story is about both of them. She should be talking in interviews about this movie,  she has earned that right.  Case closed
Yes, I agree all those things are a shame, Ray. Thank you.

Well I see the trolls are back out in their usual bullshit form.
Not a troll, just someone who has an opinion you don't like. Sorry for disturbing the community.

You think Melinda being Brian's wife is a shame. Yeah, I don't like your opinions and I also think you're a troll.
Look at the post above yours, that's not really the case. Sorry to have upset you!

What is your opinion? Just come out and say it.

Way to keep it classy, chief.

Oh yeah, I'm the unclassy one around here.

Don't worry; I'm sure at some point he'll sit down and write  another one of his infamous page long posts explaining  why you're unclassy, and why guys like you are the reason that this message board has gone downhill.

Go back to the Record Room, boys.

Gohi, I know I haven't posted much in the past (51 or so total as of now!). But, I've been lurking around for many years. And, I've sought out and researched the history of BB/BW since I was a very young man. In addition, I think I share the opinion of the BB historians and veterans of this page in believing that novices should not be faulted for having less knowledge of the history than they do...as long as they ask good questions and show a desire to understand.

But...when they plow straight ahead into these turbulent waters, even taking on people who are known to be long time first-person witnesses to the situations in which they profess to know the "truth"....well....then...they deserve whatever ridicule comes their way.

There are people here, including AGD, who have spent their lives compiling this data. And, they are all pretty reasonable people when approached in an appropriate and polite manner. There are so many people out there in this BB/BW universe that will add insight. And, with today's internet, one can find almost anything.

It's better to remain silent and be thought of as a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.

I'm not taking anybody on. I'm not saying Melinda isn't a good person or that she didn't save Brian from Landy or that she doesn't deserve her credit. All I'm saying is she's annoying in interviews and I'm hoping she isn't involved in too many more.  Sorry guys. If you enjoy her constantly correcting Brian and throwing out her two cents all the time, then good on you. This is the last I'll say about it.

She's rarely IN interviews,  but is important to get her take on what happened because she was there and directly affected.

As her her correcting Brian and throwing her two cents in, well, married couples do that all of the time.

He hasn't done an interview with Melinda for 11 years.

Couldn't agree more. It's her story too.

When I was lucky enough to meet Brian face to face and thank him for all of his music, he shook my hand and thanked me. I felt the same way Whoopi did during this interview. It's not just music, it's a connection and to be able to thank its creator was one of my favorite moments ever.

As for Melinda, I got to meet her after a show in Portland OR back in 2004 ( the SMiLE tour.) I was waiting near the buses, hoping to see Brian and introduce him to my son. Not surprisingly he never appeared but I did hang out with the rest of the band and towards the end Melinda showed up and actually took the time to talk to me and my son. She couldn't have been nicer to us, listening to my praise and glowing over our concert experience. She handled our interaction with flying colors, even though she didn't have to. Leave her alone, she's good people.

One of my favorite scenes was with Melinda hiding in her office listening to Landy throw an awful tantrum and making the decision to open her door and confront him and Landy shrinks down and slithers away.
