Title: Real life people who were lyrical topics of BB songs.
Post by: CenturyDeprived on May 16, 2015, 07:34:54 PM
There are lots...

Any documented reactions from any of them to being immortalized in lyrics by the BBs?

Does anyone think Sonny Liston knew of being referenced? How about Muhammad Ali? Would love to see what Ali's reaction would be to being handed a copy of Shut Down Vol. 2 to autograph when sitting at a sports memorabilia autograph show :)

A Young Man is Gone was Mike's re-write of "Their Hearts Were Full of Spring" and that was about James Dean too.  8)

Neither Liston nor Ali (as Clay) were the topic of a BB track: they were just referenced in a title.

I still ponder the same question though...

True. I guess they were the only people with that unique distinction.

If solo stuff is included (not sure of the rules here) then there's always Cameron Diaz...

I'll include her on the list of people I question whether or not they have been informed of their BB lyric reference or not. Did Brian ever personally know Diaz? Or was it a random surprise to one day hear a lyric stating that she's having lunch with a celebrity she's met?

The Maharishi (Everyone's In Love With You, and several others, indirectly.)

"The TM Song" mentions his name.

The number of songs which are actually about real people, as opposed to just mentioning them, as I've listed, is rather small. Top of my head...

"Judy", "Surfer Girl" - Judy Bowlles
"A Young Man Is Gone" - James Dean
"Fun, Fun, Fun" - Denny's squeeze of the time, allegedly
"The Little Old Lady From Pasadena" - Katherine Milner
"The Girl From New York City" - Leslie Gore, allegedly
"I'm Bugged At My Ol' Man" - Murry Wilson
"Anna Lee, The Healer" - Anna Lee ?? (there was an article about her in Psychic News back in the 70s)
"Marcella" - the noted masseuse
"Susie Cincinnati" - Joellyn Lambert
"Johnny Carson" - guess...
"The Night Was So Young" -  :)
"Peggy Sue" - Peggy Sue Gerron (orig. Cindy Lou Kaiter)
"My Diane" - Diane Rovell
"Somewhere Near Japan" - Mackenzie Phillips

Borderline cases are...

"Spirit Of America" - more about the car than Craig Breedlove
"Caroline, No" - Carol Mountain, Marilyn Wilson, Asher's former gf... you pick
"Passing Friend" - Marilyn (Boy George's sometime squeeze)

Feel free to update/improve with solo stuff. That list was originally compiled back in about 2000/2001 as part of a much larger project in collaboration with someone who then proceeded to fall off the radar. With good reason, as it swiftly transpired.

+ "Frankie Avalon" (tho sung by Andy Paley), "Stevie", "Marilyn Rovell", "He Couldn't Get His Poor Old Body to Move", some songs about Melinda ("Cry"?, "Dream Angel"?).
