Title: Have the BBs publicly insulted one another in the presence of each other?
Post by: CenturyDeprived on May 14, 2015, 01:12:33 PM
There are quite a few interviews of late where Mike, for example, throws what *could* be perceived by some people as insults or back-handed compliments directed towards his former BB bandmates.  Not trying start a debate about whether or not they are actual insults or not, this is a different question.

I'm wondering if such an occurrence ever happened during an interview where, for example, Mike was in the same room as Brian, during a band interview at some point? Or have all of the potentially inflammatory statements directed toward other members (that are often debated on this board) occurred only during times when it was a one-on-one interview with the BB insulter (without the potential BB insultee being present)? It seems to me those are instances where it's easier to say stuff without the other person being present.

Not just about Mike/Brian, I should add. Dennis of course was probably the most famous/infamous with his outbursts at some late shows he played, though I'm more talking about the context of proper interviews with multiple BBs present.

I guess you could add the joking ribbing that Brian gave Mike about Looking Back with Love at the Campfire sessions.

Not sure if this qualifies. At the Ventura show last year, after David Marks finished his lead vocal (can't remember if it was Getcha Back or Do You Wanna Dance), Bruce enthusiastically called David "almost an original Beach Boy". David seemed to realize the ridiculous nature of this statement and seemed to blow it off and move on. I want to think that Bruce didn't mean anything by it, but I can't be sure. Some young guy behind me who had been screaming obnoxiously throughout the show screamed "he IS an original!"

Well, it's a true statement.

Must have been a tad awkward to witness :-\

They must be having a passive aggressive fight over who is most almost-original.

You know, that's a stupid, really shitty thing to do on Bruce's part. But at the same time, I don't think he meant it badly in any way at all. However, it does seem that Bruce is kinda prone to doing things like this over the years. I've seen/heard it in interviews. Says the first thing he thinks of, usually an incredibly messed-up manner.

But regardless, I do think Dave is kinda looked at as being "less" of a Beach Boy in certain circles. And I think although Bruce has no malice toward him, it kinda shows up in the way he acts towards Dave (detailed in the Marks/Stebbins book).

'Cassius' Love vs 'Sonny' Wilson

Or the disagreement between Brian and Mike about where Fun, Fun, Fun was written

The first is obviously a gag, the second was probably playful teasing about senile memories.  :)

There's that clip, I think it's from the Making of Stars and Stripes but it also appeared on Endless Harmony, where Brian has Al hold his nose so he can sing California Girls like Mike.

After a laugh, Brian made a comment to a effect of "Mike's not gonna like this."

The exchange between Mike & Brian in Nashville Sounds concerning the genesis of "FFF", when Brian informs Mike "your memory must be getting senile !"*  Patently a joke: I honestly can't recall there being a public example of true animosity.

[* - in passing, can you just imagine the shitstorm here if Mike has said that of Brian ?  :)]
