Title: Did Brian ever listen to/talk about Freddie Mercury and queen? Post by: barto on May 12, 2015, 05:41:54 AM just curious...couldn't find anything googling. Seems like he would have enjoyed songs like bohemian rhapsody, killer queen, bicycle race...
Does anyone know if he has commented on this before? Title: Re: Did Brian ever listen to/talk about Freddie Mercury and queen? Post by: KDS on May 12, 2015, 05:48:16 AM I've never heard anything. I think Queen, particularly the early stuff, might be a little heavy for his taste.
But I'm sure he'd at least appreciate the vocal harmonies. Groups like Uriah Heep and Blue Oyster Cult also had nice harmonies. Title: Re: Did Brian ever listen to/talk about Freddie Mercury and queen? Post by: metal flake paint on May 12, 2015, 03:18:55 PM Here's what Brian had to say about Queen in a 1988 episode of L'il Arts Poker Party hosted by Art Fein:
AF: "Do you like Queen, at all?" BW: "Queen, oh yeah, Queen. Queen were not Beach Boy influenced, I mean, you know, but ah, the guy's classical background was immense, I don't have the background he has to create a record like that where it's such a big sound, ya know, not like a wall of sound like Phil Spector but in a class of its own, ya know what I mean. I heard something in it but I kept referring back to the wall of sound. If you're gonna go so far and make a record that's gonna be that great why not go all the way and do a record that sounds even better." Post by: Lee Marshall on May 12, 2015, 06:03:53 PM Very glad to see that Brian liked Queen [and Denny too]. I, too, really respect Queen's body of work. Freddie was just outstanding. BR was a mammoth piece of art. And at that time Mike was singing lead with the Boys on Rock 'n' Roll Music. Kind of a Night and Day difference. Both decent hits in their own right. Only one of the two has truly stood the test of time and become a classic.
Yet... ... ... If only things had evolved differently. Starting with Smile. Title: Re: Did Brian ever listen to/talk about Freddie Mercury and queen? Post by: KDS on May 13, 2015, 05:32:29 AM Oddly enough, Queen evolved from a band in the late 60s with Brian May and Roger Taylor called Smile.
Once Freddie Mercury joined with John Deacon, the name was changed to Queen. Title: Re: Did Brian ever listen to/talk about Freddie Mercury and queen? Post by: joshferrell on May 13, 2015, 09:30:58 AM yes and they covered "I can hear music." too.

That would've suited the BBs to a T. Title: Re: Did Brian ever listen to/talk about Freddie Mercury and queen? Post by: Aum Bop Diddit on May 13, 2015, 07:32:28 PM Didn't they "scare" him?
