Title: Hashirigaki -- Pet Sounds meets Gertrude Stein, etc.
Post by: Larry Franz on May 11, 2015, 10:26:17 AM
Thinking about "Don't Talk" reminded me that I got to attend a performance of an avant-garde theater piece in Brooklyn in 2003 called "Hashirigaki".

It's a mixture of Pet Sounds, Japanese music, Gertrude Stein's experimental writing, and some beautiful visuals. It was performed all over the world between 2000 and 2010. But I didn't find a reference to it here.

Here's a review from the Guardian from 2001:

And a link to the creator's site:

At the performance I attended, the three women sang "Don't Talk" very fast like a 60s girl group (same as mentioned in the review). In this audio of a different performance, they do it the regular way at around 43:00.
