Title: So, how tall are these people?
Post by: Komera on May 07, 2015, 12:37:48 PM
Okay, so here's the reason I joined this board.

I had an idea one day.  "Scooby-Doo, except with Beach Boys.  Yeah, I'd so watch that."

If this was back when I was a kid, that would have been the end of that.

Well... I guess I could have made a gigantic flip-book...

But in this era, there are plenty of free programs online that I can use.

So... Why not?

I wrote down some ideas I had.

Yes I'm intentionally extending this post vertically so the image in the next post will be a pleasant surprise.

It's a cheap trick, but I think you guys will like it.

Where was I?

Oh yeah...

I thought I'd try to shove everyone connected with the band in any way in '65 I could find into one cartoon.

I chose '65 because pictures of the band were starting to really show them as individuals instead of five clones in striped shirts.

So I tried to find how tall they all were.

Found Brian, Mike, Carl, Dennis, Bruce, and Al.

Could not find David's height.

Couldn't find the Honeys.

Actually, the best I could find on the Honeys were their birth years (that is, until Mike's happy birthday facebook post to Marilyn).

Found Jan.

He must be one of those guys whose natural hair color changes every three photographs.

Couldn't find Dean.

Hey, if I made this into a series, I'd put in some jokes involving Murry!

Couldn't find Murry.

I did try to sneak in a question about Murry's height into Brian's last Q&A on Facebook.

It got sandwiched between two requests for Brian to punch Mike in the mouth.

My son killed my tablet pc, so I actually can't work on this.

But I CAN gather information for when I do get enough money to get a new one.

So: how tall is David?  The Honeys?  Dean?  Murry?

In this cartoon, would Brian be the leader who stays at home and gives the missions / mysteries to solve to Mike, Al, Carl, Dennis, and Bruce?

At the end of each show, would the villain's mask be removed to show their true identify?

"Let's see who the giant crow who uncovers the cornfield really is?"

"IT'S VAN DYKE PARKS"

I lol'd.

The current idea is that which band members are in the episodes would vary.  Brian would actually attempt to sneak away, usually being pulled back to the rest of the group by the scruff of his neck.  (Except one episode: I thought it'd be funny if Brian did sneak away and Mike would exclaim "Well, I'll be a monkey's uncle!"  Then Tommy Kirk, Annette Funicello, and Stanley walk by, and Tommy says, "No, I am.")  Al and David would play paper-rock-scissors to see who gets to be in the episode, or they'd replace each other half way through for no apparent reason.  That joke's moot if I can't find out how tall David is.

There would be a series long villian, an alien painter who is trying to steal the boys' muse because the ancient Greeks didn't make up a painting muse.  (Never mind that the Greeks also didn't make up a muse for music as we currently know it...)  The alien painter's paintings would come to life, but she'd sometimes paint some really strange stuff.  Like, instead of painting a get-away car... she'd paint a cardboard cutout of a car and run off carrying that.

It makes more sense in Photoshop.  The ruler actually stops at their heels.  And I drew the hair from the Pet Sounds cover.  Think his hair was being blown by the wind...  But nevermind, when against the scale he's 5'5" to the top of the scalp.  And he's got a strangely large head for such a short guy.

Yes, it's Jan.  IMDb listed his height at 6'1.5" and Mike at 6'1".  Hence his position between Brian and Mike.

This is great, but why does Jan look like a superhero who just stepped in from an anime movie? Aside from that sweater, I mean.

Brian looks good. Mike looks good. Al looks good. Dennis looks good. Carl's face is passable but looks like he was on a massive diet. If you're looking for accuracy, you need to make him chunkier. Dave's maybe a little taller and he needs quite a bit of work on the resemblance factor.

I like Jan to death, but he shouldn't be in the picture. He should probably be replaced with Bruce.  Jan should be in a separate picture with Dean.

Just my unsolicited humble opinion........   ;D

Joke? Dave is no joke! He played Toes On The Nose rhythm guitar and kicked major bootie on the C50! Hey, this is serious stuff here. Give credit where it's due. David Marks is a very legitimate Beach Boy and deserves a fine graphic depiction on your layout there.

I always wanted to see a 'Beach Boys at The Last Supper' drawing. Wouldn't that be cool? OK, maybe a little disrespectful but still.

*Looks long and hard at the avatar.*

Hmmm... how do I respond?

1) Because I said so.
2) Neutral figure pose.
3) Sadly, due to being on different layers in different folders in Photoshop, these long denied lovers can gaze lovingly for all of eternity but are doomed forever to never touch.  It's a tragic tale destined to bring even the heavens to tears.
4) Dicks?  If the clothing layers are turned off (they all have multiple outfits... Brian has 13 of them!), they all have Ken doll nether regions.
5) All of the above.
6) None of the above.

Beach Boys Last Supper.  Hmm.  Might have to take that challenge someday.

This is a great start, i find it very charming. Here are some thoughts: Brian and Carl are too skinny, Al is too tall, Jan looks too much like a superhero or anime character, and all of their legs are too muscular. Why are they all positioned as if about to pick a fight or take flight like a bird or being strip searched? Also, why are you placing such importance on their height to the the point where you won’t even attempt drawing up a new character? Can’t you get a close enough approximation based on photos? I WANT TO SEE THE ROVELL SISTERS AND MURRY. Also, Chuck Britz (and his exceptionally hairy forearms), Van Dyke Parks, Phil Spector, Banana and Louie, etc.

I appreciate your enthusiasm.  Given that my tablet pc is non-functional, and I currently have no other way of drawing anyone else, I really don't think I can be faulted for trying to find the missing heights before I once again can get back to drawing.  My not drawing the missing people has nothing to do with a reluctance to estimate how tall these people are, and everything to do with a drawing device that no longer accepts pen input.

And estimating height is harder for me than I care to admit because of perspective.  The person standing in back is always going to look taller.  In some 50th Anniversary pictures, David looks taller than Brian.  In other pictures, he looks shorter than Brian.  Same with Jan and Dean.  Very hard for me to tell who is taller when neither is standing up straight.  Do I make Murry taller than Dennis?  I swear to Bob that I'm not making excuses for not drawing these people.  I just don't have the means to do any drawings right now and am just trying to get a little more information under my belt before I can resume drawing.

I am so heartened by everyone's replies.  Even those who have issue with the posture (so I can see the sleeves but not take up as much space as Vitruvian Man, or have foreshortened arms if their arms were akimbo).  It does amuse me that even though I did bulk Brian and Carl up, the replies think I didn't do it enough.  And that even though Jan, Dennis, and Al were drawn with similar body types, Jan somehow winds up looking like a superhero.  While I can't do anything about it right now, I will gladly keep in mind that I need to shove a few dozen Twinkies into Brian and Carl, and put Jan on a diet.  Never thought I'd ever type that!

Here's what I can tell from the Beach Boys I've met:

Brian -- FREAKY tall. I'm 6'2" and I had to arch my head pretty far to make eye contact with him!

Al -- short. He's as tall standing as Brian is sitting.

Ricky -- maybe even taller than Brian.

love the drawings! fun stuff

I think the issue with Jan is his hair, looks much more stylized (and "anime") than anyone else's. less realistic in comparison. I'm not sure why Jan is even included to be honest, but whatever.

apparently the idea for an animated Beach Boys TV show was actually floated in the 70s but never got past the concept stage. height was clearly not much of a consideration:

regarding the Last Supper idea, I feel like we've discussed that concept here before. other contenders for the Judas seat included Manson, Murry, and Landy.

I believe Jacob was the baptismal name of the man most know as "Zeppo" Wilson, though there are still some scholars who insist that his first name was Julius. (Not to be confused with Zeppo Marx, of course, whose birth name was Herbert.)

I think Jacob was one of the 18 guys who co-wrote Sail On Sailor.

Never knew there was a proposed cartoon in the 70s.  What would Carl think about the fact that he's so pudgy in that picture, while holding a large ice cream cone, while Brian looks to be in terrific shape?

I like the big sea monster nervously clutching his copy of Pet Sounds.  I guess music does soothe the savage beast.

each character had a quirky personality trait and like Shaggy, Carl always had the munchies. he's toting a picnic basket in the second pic. Brian was "Mr. Fix-it" with a permanent pair of headphones. Dennis was a karate master (and bassist). Mike the cowboy. and Al was apparently 8 feet tall and funky as hell. the monkey is a nice touch and predates BJ and the Bear by several years i believe.

Got my tablet PC working again!  Hooray!  So I started on run cycles, but scrapped them after half an hour after realizing that I just couldn't QUITE make out everything in the downloaded Muybridge sheets.  Drat, and I was hoping I wouldn't have to actually pull out the Muybridge books.  My toddler loves flipping pages.

So I went back and continued filling out the height and clothing psd (that's what the first picture in this thread is from... it's a height and (eventually) 13 different clothing reference, not supposed to be a fan picture), and I have come to realize that Bruce in the 60s seems to either be allergic or mortally afraid of color photographs.

It's true!  Al has the head of someone a full foot taller than him!  However... the proportion chart I was using doesn't.  But that's okay, I know exactly what it's like to be a short person with a big head (in retrospect, that just sounds wrong).  I'm of a height that'd make even Al look tall, and back in high school band it was natural that I was handed a small hat.  Except the hat didn't fit.  And neither did the medium hat.  But the large one did!

IMDb is where I got the heights of almost everyone that I have heights for.  Bruce is the exception, I found his height on a site that listed it in centimeters; I had to throw the number into an online cm to inch converter because I IZ AMERICUN AND DUNT THUNK IN METRIK!  The only site I've seen that thinks Brian is taller is TVTropes which simply generalizes him between 6'2" and 6'3".

I know you're looking for hard stats, but there are many photographs of B. Wilson and Marilyn R-W-R standing straight and right next to each other. The top of her head aligns consistently with his chin. Most pictures of her and her sister Diane are a little more slouchy, but I'd guess Diane is an inch taller than Marilyn.

I agree with some posters that B.W. is a bit more than 6'2" though that is the official number out there.

Was in the middle of working on Al's run cycle (after finishing Dennis and Mike) when my tablet pc's ac adapter made a crackling sound and started smelling horrid.  Since the battery was already a POS when I got it, I literally (and I do mean literally) had just enough time to save my progress before turning the tablet pc off.  Luckily I've got enough to get the third cheapest adapter on Amazon (the first two have low rating)... but my gawd I just can't have this thing working for more than a few days at a time, can I?   :wall :wall :wall :wall :wall

I know I haven't been on the forums for a while.  The reason I haven't been is the exact same reason I haven't hit the point of actually animating yet... real life happened.  Oh, so much to mention!  But you guys don't want to hear me "Wah wah wah!"

So without further ado...

THE LADIES!

Brian and Al are in there purely for size comparison.  That's why they're set at 50%.  The ladies from left to right are (not that you can't tell the Honeys apart, but one never knows): Diane, Marilyn, Ginger, and... Bheue, the space alien who's out to steal the boys' muse because the Greeks didn't make an art muse.

I drew Marilyn first, based on this picture so I could draw her eyebrows even with his colarbone.  That's the best I can do for her height since either the internet is not obsessed with her, or she's protective of information about her.  For Diane and Ginger, I just took Marilyn and sized her up and down respectively, hence the identical brush marks.

THIS served as a guide to size... I kid you not.  Basically, I just guessed from that cover that Diane's a bit taller and Ginger is a bit shorter.  Hooray for guesswork!  Oh, and fun fact: since I drew Marilyn first, I tried making her mouth a bit more neutral like most of the boys, but she absolutely refused to look remotely like the real Marilyn.  So then I drew a smile, and suddenly she's Marilyn!  Which I guess just goes to show that Marilyn's smile is magical.

Yeah, I know Bheue's clothes look really complex next to everyone else.  I Googled Retro sci-fi outfits and that (in silver) was one of results.

I love Scooby-Doo and I love the Beach Boys. I'd really love to see such an episode. Cool work!

Just to add another Brian cartoon version, from Duck Dodgers:

Al is shorter than the shortest girl? It must be a joke.

I do have some mild jokes about Al's height, but this isn't one of them.  That's why I explained my method of guessing their heights.  Bheue is 5'2", which is coincidentally the world wide female height average, and NOT coincidentally my height.  The average for American females starts at 5'4" and goes up from there.  I drew Al at his IMDb listed height of 5'5", although some of the people in this thread seem to think that's actually being generous.  Marilyn was drawn about 5'8" (also Bruce's height), though as I explained above, I was really matching her eyebrows to Brian's colarbones and was not regarding the scale.  That's not really THAT unheard of height for a woman.  Diane is drawn two inches taller (5'10", which is also Carl's listed height), and Ginger was drawn an inch shorter (5'7").  I would still love hard data about how tall they are, but my guessing isn't unreasonable, I think.  It means they'll look Carl, Dennis, and Bruce in the eye, which is perfectly fine for a cartoon.

Al might be short *now*, due to age. But Marilyn's shorter, she doesn't look 5'8".

The number doesn't look right to me, either, but I'm just matching body parts.  And it really can't be all THAT tall since the media is always going on about how short Tom Cruise is, and he's 5'7"... which doesn't sound short to ME at all!

I think Bheue's leader should be Van Dyke Parks. Murray play the hot headed mechanic at Beach Boys HQ! And maybe Blondie and Ricky make some appearances?  ;)

5'8" for Marilyn seems too tall. I always thought she was shorter. Look at this photo:
http://www.carlwilsonfoundation.org/walk00/pix/cwfcousins1.jpg

There could be sloping ground there, but she even looks shorter here:

Next to Carnie, who I believe is 5'3" or so, she's a bit shorter. Taking into account that Carnie is wearing higher heels than Marilyn, and maybe Marilyn has shrunk a tiny bit, Marilyn is probably 5"4' or 5'5".
She doesn't appear to be dwarfed in photos of Brian, but she may very well have been wearing heels in those photos, which would give her a couple of inches at least.

That's what I said. Thanks for backing me up. Matching notwithstanding, we should stick to real heights & not make Al shorter than Marilyn. It's not respectful imo.
