Title: Final show with everybody...
Post by: OllieBop on April 25, 2015, 06:47:06 PM
I was wondering, I know Brian only performed live sporadically with The Beach Boys from 1965-mid 90's and Carl was away in the early 80's with his solo career. As for Dennis I'm not sure as to how much he was going out live in the early 80's?

My question for you all is... when was the final show in which Brian, Dennis, Carl, Mike, Al and I guess Bruce performed and appeared together?

I guess it's 4th July 1983? But my BB's knowledge is much and far more limited than some if not nearly every one of you great people.

Someone has to know...

This has been discussed previously, and from what I remember it was a show later in the year either in Seattle or San Francisco. Someone else can correct me or elaborate further.

August 3, 1983. Pacific Amphitheater, Costa Mesa California.

I think Carl noted it in the American Band video.

In American Band, Carl noted "that summer, we played Atlantic City. It was the last Fourth of July concert with the original Beach Boys." A true statement, but 8/3/83 in Costa Mesa was the last show with all six members. Dennis' last show might have been 10/27/83 in Pomona, CA.

Dennis showed up in Pomona on September 27th 1983, but was too, ah, "disruptive" and not allowed to play. Thus his last show was the previous day (there's photographic evidence).

Are those pictures available on the net somewhere? Would love to see them.

Alas, no - one set was sold, either at auction or on eBay, with the proviso that they not be made public, and the other known photo is in the hands of a private collector, along with the ticket to that day's show that DW autographed (in fact the pic shows him doing just that).

Wondering if some of these might have been posted in the pictures thread in Media?
I know Rocker ( and others) often posts pics he finds on the internet; tho I'm sure how one would find them in the 90 odd pages/ how to search other than page by page

Any pictures from the final show?
I'll add to that "Or audio/video?"

It would be nice to be able to experience the moment in some way.

Presumably there's pro shot audio/video of the full Costa Mesa show in the valuts, since a couple of video clips were used in "American Band": namely, Dennis singing YASB and the preceding bit where Brian wraps up IJAMOT and introduces Dennis. There's also video from the same show playing under a narration bit that IIRC shows Brian on the electric piano and Dennis on the acoustic grand piano, or perhaps walking across the stage (likely HELP ME, RHONDA). And I'll bet the live versions of a couple of songs, like 409, that are sprinkled throughout the soundtrack, are also from this show.

While the Costa Mesa video footage has in-line audio and is professionally-shot, it kind of has the vibe of b-roll footage shot by a single pro camera as opposed to even a two or three-camera pro shoot or in-house video feed. I wouldn't be surprised if only some clips of the show were actually captured.

Obviously, even if only captured by a single camera in front of the stage, if they caught the full thing uncut, that would be quite interesting to see.

There are 30 seconds of footage of a different part of "It's Just a Matter of Time" from the show on YouTube, posted by a company that licenses the footage out. There were/are a few clips like this of stuff excerpted in "An American Band":

Ah, I remember that footage from An American Band! Strange how he looks like 15BO Brian with an 80s haircut.

Does this come from the Costa Mesa show?

Anyway, check out the Pro-Shot-Concert-List, linked in my signature. There is some '83 stuff.

I always wondered why they didn't let us hear more of IJAMOT. The film was trying to emphasize that Brian was healthy and active again, and writing many new songs...and all we get is a 5 second snippet?
