Title: The BBs writing original songs (or unique versions) for commercials
Post by: CenturyDeprived on March 20, 2015, 02:20:48 PM
What's the full deal with the aborted Cool, Cool Water Coke commercial, and an unreleased song or 2 of Denny's that I recall reading were envisioned for commercials? Since it was around the same time, I wonder if they had some agent they were working with to try and get commercials going. I guess it reflects how desperate they were for cash around the time.

What other examples do we have of the BBs themselves (not other artists' cover versions) writing material specifically for a commercial, or they themselves rewriting/re-recording a preexisting song for a commercial?

I guess there's Be True to Your Bud, and the Good Vibrations Sunkist ad. Are there any others I'm missing?

-Re-recorded "This Whole World" in 1971 for Eastern Airlines.

-The Dennis song is "It's a New Day."  Was for a shampoo ad, also in 1971.

Mike rerecorded something for a cruise ad. Can't remember it off the top of my head, but does this ring any bells for anyone else?

I take it that "It's a New Day" never actually got used in the shampoo ad? Does anyone know what ad that was? If it wasn't in fact used, it would be interesting to see what song actually got used instead.

I know that some people think Soulful Old Man Sunshine sounds like a shampoo ad, which I do think is funny considering the band actually did record another song for a shampoo ad around that time. It does make me wonder if SOMS was ever intended for an ad of any kind, since it is so different from their other output at the time.

"Honda 55"... and while I know Jeff is on the Sunkist "GV", I'm not sure the rest of the band is. Are. Whatever.

Does the radio promo (the call sign I forget) count ?

Also... "And we'll have fun, fun,fun/With The Handle made by Kodak all day" - Mike &, I think Celebration.

I don't think Dennis wrote "It's A New Day" to order, more he pitched to a shampoo company. As I recall, he asked for something like a million bucks and the shampoo exec, understandably, threatened to throw him out of the skyscraper window. I think Ed can fill in the finer detail there.

And let's not forget "bring your toys to Crystal Ship" on the Ultimate Christmas cd.

There was also "Be True To Your Bud".

Edit: Next time, read the full thread, Jason.  ::)  :lol

So THAT'S what they sing! I have wondered about that off and on since 1998. Thank you.

I don't the full deal on CCW but here is what Coca-Cola told me around 2000:

"Mr. Mott, your message was shared with our Archives Department for research.  Unfortunately, they have no record of an advertising jingle being recorded or performed by Brian Wilson.  If this song was actually written for one of our commercials, we suspect it was never used.
Gina L'Heureux, Industry and Consumer Affairs, Coca-Cola”

Yer right, memories do fade, here's what I remember them telling me about 1998-9:

>>   Mr. Bgas we shared your email with our Archives Department.  Unfortunately, they informed us they had been in receipt of an advertising jingle recorded/performed by Mike Love and his band ( they believe he called them America's Band), but the song was deemed horrendous and unusable and was subsequently trashed.   Rodale Mansurest, Consumer Affairs, Coca-Cola  <<

What about the song Mike Love did for that old Hyatt Regency commercial? "At the Hyatt Regency...wish you were heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeere!"

Gina must have been Rodale's replacement.  All these years I thought bgas was your first name.

In 1988 the Beach Boys apparently did a set of commercials for the Wet 'N Wild chain of U.S. water parks, to the tune of "Catch a Wave."  The local one was Emerald Pointe water park in Greensboro, NC, and the commercial went "Catch a wave at Emerald Pointe today."  I clearly remember hearing it on the radio, and it was Al -- not Mike -- who handled the lead vocal.

Not the BB, but here's a weird as it gets (but still pretty beautiful) commercial Van Dyke Parks did for Datsun. I dare someone to justify putting it in their SMiLE mix.
