Title: Who-played-what guide? Post by: runnersdialzero on March 13, 2015, 04:52:53 PM Does such a thing exist? I know Pet Sounds has been well-chronicled in this sense (because omg pet sounds paul mccartney), but it'd be cool to get something semi-definitive in this category for their whole catalog. I continually see someone like Jon Stebbins or Mark Linett post something like "Bruce did this" or "Dennis did that" and I often had no idea prior. I'd like to see this compiled/help in its compilation partially for the sake of getting these Wrecking-Crew-Did-Everything kids to calm the fuck down, but mostly just out of interest.
Also, does it weird anyone else that there's at least one track on a Beach Boys record in which Brian, Mike, Dennis, Carl, Al and Bruce do not appear at all? That's crazy! Title: Re: Who-played-what guide? Post by: metal flake paint on March 13, 2015, 05:52:57 PM Nothing career spanning yet, but there's Jon's FAQ, the Smile sessionography, recent issues of ESQ, and online resources, namely:
http://www.beachboysarchives.com/ http://fridaynightboys300.blogspot.com.au/search?q=keep+an+eye There's plenty of session info contained in many of c-man's posts throughout the years. Of course, there's also Craig's upcoming MiC online sessionography (with expanded book edition). Title: Re: Who-played-what guide? Post by: branaa09 on March 13, 2015, 05:57:52 PM Yes we need one! I mean there are sources such as: http://www.beachboysarchives.com/
http://fridaynightboys300.blogspot.co.uk/2014/12/the-beach-boys-1964-keep-eye-on-summer.html http://recordingsunflower.blogspot.com/ The 15 Big Ones Sessionography is right on the back of the LP of the album and in the album booklet for the CD version and some of the ESQ issues contain Craig Slowinski's Sessionography for All Summer Long and the Christmas Album. Craig said that he is also in the middle of working on a Made In California Boxset Sessionography as well and this summer issue of ESQ will have full Sessionography for Summer Days! I would love to see an all album source book as well! Title: Re: Who-played-what guide? Post by: Wirestone on March 13, 2015, 06:05:07 PM Yeah, what is the story with the MIC sessionography? Any updates?
Title: Re: Who-played-what guide? Post by: c-man on March 14, 2015, 08:57:58 AM Yeah, what is the story with the MIC sessionography? Any updates? Sure - it's coming, in an online nuts-and-bolts form, and there will also be the expanded book-edition (multi-volume). Just finishing up the particulars of Volume 1, but it's essentially been done for awhile. There will also soon be revised and updated sessionographies for Pet Sounds and SMiLE online at beachboysarchives.com. I'm also going to tweak the POB/Bambu sessionographies there as well, to incorporate new details that have come to light. And upcoming issues of ESQ will feature sessionographies on the three group Caribou albums. In regards to Pet Sounds - as runner mentioned above, it has been pretty well documented over the years - but nowhere near as thoroughly or as accurately as what I have in the works. ;) Title: Re: Who-played-what guide?
