it's about taking sedatives during a plane ride- and the excellent mix these sedatives make with the previous night's amphetamines. Also, it's about honkin' down the air highway.

Nice observations, this is what the twofer liner notes should have read like.

Still think "honking down the highway" is an allusion to ejaculation also, especially with Al taking it "one inch at a time" and all.

Another intriguing case is Roller Skating Child. According to Brian it is "a vision of someone that could rollerskate and would like to rollerskate". Makes perfect sense to me!

And "Love is a Woman" is about Mike Love's issues with gender identity.

I don't think Brian ever told Mike what "Love is a Woman" was about.

Anyone wanking over anything connected to Al Jardine is just wrong.

Some funny stuff in this thread  :lol

I agree that HDTH has obvious sexual connotations, Brian is a genius in making it all sound cool and laid-back.

Now a couple of questions I've always had:
  • Why would Brian write about flying in an airplane when he was so afraid of flying? He makes the whole experience sound nice and easy. Is it really about an acid trip?
  • Why was I'll bet he's nice given to Dennis for the opening lines? I think its a wonderful song that could have used some Al (sorry he has the best voice in the band). Did Brian downplay the potential of this song with the production he chose? The demo is so much cooler
  • Who thought Good time made sense in this album? Why???? Why??? I love that song but I skip it when I play Love You, it damages the flow
  • How can we convince Brian to release a box set of this album? Or play it live? He said in the Q&A he was considering it. Can we mount an online campaign? Maybe on petitions.org? This is for the benefit of mankind!

If Brian is scared to fly, he's sure not showing it with his latest Facebook posts coming home from Germany

Perhaps you can start a Kickstarter fund to pay for the Album compilation/ fund a tour( since half his crowd won't go, as they claim to hate Love You; LOSERS!!!  All of them )

Perhaps Brian was relieving stress of flying.  Maybe he was talking to Landy about the freak out in '64 and he told him to write about it.  I honestly think the laid-back feel of the song was to contrast the stress that came with flying at the time.

Or maybe I'm completely wrong about his fear of flying and his freak-out was due to other issues.

Stating/implying that Al has a better voice than the great Carl Wilson is equal parts weird and stupid.  On second thought, maybe more stupid than weird.  :)

And who has ever said Brian was afraid of flying, aside from you ? He had a breakdown on a plane in flight, true, but that was nothing to do with the act of flying. The lack of basic BB knowledge on this board dismays me sometimes.

Surely I am not the only one who wants to know if this is fact or fiction. We thrive on getting trivia clarified here so I'm asking?

As I asked on the locked thread....As I don't have this Stebbins book, what is the exact wording? Was it from a Brian interview or an opinion?

'Fear of flying' and 'not liking flying' are two different things.

As AGD says...What it was isn't what you thought it is, because it is what it is, because you claim so, because you confirm it, because you insist that it is what it is. And therefore, it ain't what it ain't.

So the wording in Jons book please. Anyone?

The link to the exact wording is provided by Cincinnati Kid in the locked thread.

It's a bit ambiguous as to whether Stebbins himself believes it.

To respond here...

I don't monitor this place 24/7: I work and contrary to popular belief, I do have a life, or something closely resembling one. Thus, if I don't respond straight away, I'm not ignoring you, unless the post and/or the poster require ignoring. Further, the currently locked thread could and should have been a PM, but of course that wouldn't have any success in trying to make me look petty or foolish (and here's a hint for the future: you're trying too hard - wait a while and I'll do it for you, with much more effect and panache).

So, had you sent me a PM with the info about Jon's book, I'd have said in (private) response what I'm saying here: thanks for that and I stand corrected. Not read that book for over four years. That said, Brian evidently got over his dislike of flying sometime after 1964, and in any event, it wouldn't automatically disqualify him from writing about the topic, nor does it in any slightest way indicate the song is actually about an acid trip.

Final observation: if you think I was being aggressive in my reply, I'm guessing you've not been reading this board that long. ;D
