Title: Individual Beach Boy voices inadvertently jumping out from the harmony stack
Post by: CenturyDeprived on February 06, 2015, 10:49:49 AM
I'm sure most people who've listened to lots of BBs music have heard many moments when individual Beach Boy voices jump out from the harmony stack. Sometimes it seems like it was an inadvertent occurrence where their individual voice is very audibly recognizable, not necessarily a moment where the particular member was purposefully given a chance to shine. Maybe they just sang louder or closer to the mic at a certain point.

Here are some that come to mind:

Denny – Cherry Cherry Coupe (especially on stereo version) (at 1:28 the lyric “…coupe now”)

Denny – Don’t Back Down (alternate stereo version from Keep Your Eye on Summer) (at 1:09 the lyric “Don’t Back Down”)

Mike – Little Deuce Coupe (at 0:07 the lyric “what I gawwwwwtt”)

I know there are many, many other examples, anyone care to add some more?

On Sunflower, Brian's shrill falsetto sticks out a couple of times.

Whenever I have noticed someone jumping out of the mix, it's usually Dennis.  Surfin' USA comes to mind.

Yea me too.  Sometimes, I can't tell Al and Carl apart.

I immediately noticed a change in the harmony sound on California Girls (Bruce).

Carl-Surf's Up ("Whoa child.")

Mike-All this is That ("Jai Guru Dev, jai guru dev.")

Brian-Slip On Through ("Ooooooooh, yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah a yeah a yeah.")

Not sure about these last two. Maybe someone can confirm/correct

Brian-You Need a Mess of Help to Stand Alone ("She don't know it.")

Brian-Funky Pretty ("Funky come back, funky come back.")

You know, I was in yoga class yesterday, and the mantra the instructor gave us translated to "I am that, you are that, all you and I are that."  I went hmm!

Can't remember the mantra itself, but it wasn't used in the song.

At the end of Surf's Up, I hear Dennis pretty clearly.

Supposedly Dennis doesn't sing on this one...which part, or at what point, are you referring to?

I think I hear him say "That's why the child." I might be wrong. It's easier to hear on the vocal only version on the Get the Boot bootleg.

Brian-You Need a Mess of Help to Stand Alone ("She don't know it.")

Brian-Funky Pretty ("Funky come back, funky come back.")

I'm not 100% convinced he's singing on either one of those.

MAYBE at the end of Funky Pretty - "ooooh Funky!". Yeah that's most likely him. Other than that, and the beginning of "California Saga: California", I don't hear him on any of Holland or Carl & The Passions.

on "Our Team" Dennis' voice sticks out like a soar thumb on "We're number one...."
