Title: When You Listen to Music, Do You...
Post by: Compost on June 04, 2006, 11:34:45 AM
It depends on the environment for me, but lately I've become a big finger-snapper, much to the annoyance of my wife (and myself in fact).

I always listen while I"m driving, so usually I have the full beat going on my left foot, sometimes on my right foot, most of the time I'm slapping the steering wheel too, and I'm always singing whatever part of the song I can pull off that day.

I've been known to do every one of those except for snapping my fingers at various times (never mastered finger snapping.)

Yeah, I do all that stuff except snap my fingers.

I pretty much do all of those, just picked up snapping recently.

I used to play air keyboard to everything, even things without any keyboard sounds in them, using the logic that if the keyboard was expensive enough it could replicate any sound anyway.

All of the above. I save fingersnapping for jazz  :afro

foot-tapper.

tends to be less annoying for everyone else.

I swivel my head kind of trance-like sometimes, but I wouldn't call it "bobbing." So I picked the last option. When music slays me, it slays me. I connect it with spirit more than body. I'm not a dancer.

All of these, but I sing the most. Gotta learn somehow....

All, but picked 'boogaloo'.

Well, depends on the music. For drum heavy tracks, I pretend I'm playing them.  For keyboard driven songs, the same thing. For electronica-pop or heavy rhythm stuff, I tend to bob my head. An singing, of course.

Air bass is my thing. Electric bass, not double bass. Fingerpicked, thumb resting on the neck (my air bass is Fender Jazz).

+1. I've stopped doing it now but I used to play air bass when putting on a new pair of trousers.

Generally,  I bob my head to music, leaving my limbs free for whatever.

All-out boogalooing is taboo, as paying other people's hospital bills is an expense I can do without.

I have been known to sway gently at classical concerts.

I need to be able to select multiples to be accurate. I do almost all of the above.

What about Marvin Gaye? His music is boring.
finger snaps for jazz. Drumming, guitar. Piano. Lip sync to the singer.

That may be your opinion, and you're perfectly entitled to voice it, but I think you'll find you're in a minority.

Of one.  ;D

Big deal. Like I said, his music is boring & everyone who likes Marvin Gaye will get the same answer from me. Majority/minority - I wouldn't give 2 figs. So there.

With that overwhelmingly negative, narcissistic, self absorbed attitude, why do you bother posting on this board? Seriously, during your time here you have not had a positive thing to say about, well, anything.

Am I supposed to like all the music? Serious question. Besides, when smb. implies that not liking Marvin Gaye is blasphemy/weird/abnormal, I answer back with same.

You obviously didn't read my posts. Go to posting history & you'll see I did write sth. nice/useful. Did I offend AGD? I never did say anything bad to anyone, nothing of this caliber like you here did ("why do you bother posting on this board?"), so I don't understand your attitude, Jay.

Why do I bother? To discuss the BBs, of course. Silly question.

a) I was being smutty, but...
b) I love Marvin Gaye, who tried to preach a bit of tolerance that
c)  you might, on occasion, put into practice.

Your love, like, dislike or lack of respect for any artist is your business, but when you make sweeping negative statements about someone clearly held in high regard, you might think about the way you phrase your response.

When I listen to music, I usually just listen and let the music wash over me.

Maybe some air guitar if nobody is around.  Depends on what I'm listening to.

If I don't know the lyrics, I just let the music wash over me.  If I do, I almost always sing along.  When it comes to BBs songs, I usually end up doing the Brian shoulder raise and Mike pointing/thumbing.  :lol

What's tolerance got to do with all this? I don't care what Marvin Gaye tried to preach, I don't listen to a song for lyrics nor do I analyze them. I like a song for melody, arr., vocal. Otherwise, I could just read a poem.
where was I negative - show it. Is Marvin Gaye above all the artists that one can't say his music is boring? I am justified to say it, heard about half of his stuff, it is not the "didn't like a couple songs & instantly wrote him off" case. So I think *you* should re-phrase your response.

Now who was negative in this thread is Jay/Ognir Rrats. I said no word to the guy, yet he shows up & gives me psychological portrait without knowing me - then asks "Why do you bother posting on this board?" & states that basically all my posts are negative as if he read them start to finish. So that's what I get for an innocent post NOT directed at him? I didn't question fellow posters why they bother posting. This whole thing could've been avoided if Jay didn't come to AGD's rescue when it *wasn't* necessary. Apparently, what I said is MUCH more insulting than things like "stupid Brianistas", "you're retards" & a- & f-words that some folk use here in reference to various posters. Where was Jay when they needed him?

If I'm driving, which I don't do much anymore, I sing like no one can hear me. It's exhilarating.

Sometimes I'll be studying and listening to music while in the university libraries. And I find myself bobbing my head. I've learned to not care if people are watching :P.

Also, sometimes if I do chores or cook or something, it's nice to have background music on and sort of dance to it.

When I listen to music, I usually just listen and let the music wash over me.
Mostly this, though, for me. Especially falling asleep to music. Listening to Sufjan or Tame Impala while falling asleep is euphoric.
