Title: Can Surfin' Safari ever appear in Stereo?
Post by: branaa09 on January 10, 2015, 06:06:00 AM
So we know that the Surfin U.S.A Album and on can be all Stereo. What about the Surfin' Safari album? What Session Masters are missing? We have the backing track sessions and Overdub Sessions for Summertime Blues,  Heads I Win Tails I Lose has just Overdub Sessions for Vocals, We have almost all the Tracking Sessions for Little Girl (Your My Miss America) except the vocals sessions, we have the master takes for the Cuckoo Clock and County Fair Backing Tracks as well as the 2nd Vocal and instrument Overdub Sessions for those two songs, but that's it. I heard a while back that Surfin' is actually a Two-Track Master, with Vocals on one side and the instruments on the other side, so that one would work. We also have the odd ball Extraction mix of 409 that works surprisingly well! I know that Surfin' Safari either was only Mono or the tape was lost in time so it would need an extraction mix. Are there any tapes that haven't appeared on the SOTs set that exist? Or do we have to have extraction mixes of Ten Little Indians, Chug a Lug, Moon Dawg and the Shift?  So maybe Craig, Andrew, Alan or Mark or some other experts can weigh in on this topic!

You're forgetting "Land Ahoy" in perfect stereo.

Re "Land Ahoy" incidentally can someone tell me what the heck "lop a stoy" is?  I keep trying to play "stoy" in Scrabble and it won't fly.

Well, in Illinois
There's a village named Stoy.
But could you be mishearing
The phrase "papa's toy"?

I always thought it was "off the stoy l'ahoy", whatever that means - well, those lyric web sites would have it that the words are "Papa's toy, l'hoy", whatever that means.

Look there, matey - http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/beachboys/landahoy.html (http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/beachboys/landahoy.html) - but I could be wrong...

In the meantime, tell your scrabble-buddies "stoy" is urban-slang for "story", like "cray" is the new "crazy", ie, "Dude jived me a mad stoy 'bout a cray mofo"

If the album were released in stereo and "Surfin'" had the vocals in one channel and the instruments in the other channel I would continue to feel as though my face were in a pie of never-ending proportion. :'(

I think we would have gotten more of an "extraction" stereo mix of "409" if the multitracks were doable in stereo. I'm guessing they're either also two-track recordings or are missing/don't exist.

The drum track being in one channel of "Land Ahoy" makes me HEAVE. OH MY GOD but I feel like they may have fixed it later on but I don't know because I have 935 officially released mixes of every song in their catalog.

Forget "off the story l'ahoy" or "lop a stoy", the real head-scratcher lyric of the song is "WE'LL LEAVE THIS SHIP AND RUN TO OSTRICH FARMS!!!"
