Title: what exactly is cdtd recording? Post by: billyritty on June 01, 2006, 01:46:58 AM Been reading the Stephen Desper thred and i came across this interesting technique for recording vocals but,for the life of me,i just can't get a grip on it.How do you record something using CDTD?I know it's been covered in Sthepen's book.I tried to contact Mr.Desper to buy the book but he is not answering my e-mails.Can anyone help me on this matter?

I think you're confusing this with his Spatialier technology in terms of it's the spatialier that gives things 3-D sound. The CTDT is just a stereo mic-ing technique used when you're doing staggered tracking but you want a little more cohesive stereo sound. Say you want to record a horn section, but you can only afford to hire one guy. Instead of recording him in mono 5 times playing two trumpet parts and three sax parts, you set up an XY overhead situation, like you were going to record a 5-piece horn section in stereo. You set up 5 chairs, still pretending that five people will be sitting in them at the same time. The horn player will then be recorded 5 seperate times in stereo, moving from chair to chair each time. I suppose you could even close mic each part, and then bring in the stereo composite as well.
