Title: Are there certain songs you skip over when listening to a Beach Boys album?
Post by: Lee Marshall on December 06, 2014, 03:59:09 AM
Having just come down rather roughly on 'In The Back of My Mind'...it got me to thinkin'...there are perhaps specific songs you don't really care for on some of the albums released over all these years...

Back in the vinyl days it was tough to skip a song unless it was the last track on a side.  [didn't want to unnecessarily scratch the record by lifting and replacing the needle.]  With cds and newer methods of listening it became an easy thing to do.

Ya I know the musical track for ITBOMM was/is great...it's the vocal performance Brian used which throws me off.  There are others I don't care for on other albums but it's YOUR turn.  Any cringe-worthy BBs' songs you generally avoid? ???

Only one- "Then I Kissed Her"  always hated it, cannot believe it was a 45 in the UK.

Most anything with ML bleating out the lead-really don't listen to the early material too much anymore unless it's Brian, Carl or Al up front.

I'm absolutely with you on the last one, but Pitter Patter? That's the only song I don't skip when I put on side 2 of MIU...

That would be mine, too, especially during the vinyl years. It's also hard to listen to The Beach Boys 1985 all the way through.

A fair bit of the first album, but generally, up until Summer Days, only the obvious fillers. 15B0 - Everyone's In Love; MIU - 75% of it (but not Pitter Patter, which I consider one of its saving graces); LA - HCTN; KTSA -  75% of it; 85 - 75% of it; Still Cruisin' - all of the newer stuff except for SNJ; SIP - find it hard to listen to at all but quite like Strange Things Happen; Stars and Stripes - I like 2 or 3 tracks; TWGMTR - 50 - 60%

Many of the choices mad here would also be mine...but the SOME of the songs picked here...I like very much.  For example...Like Smilin' Ed...I'm a 'Pitter Patter' fan.  Anyway...carry on.

I have songs I skip but also a song I always skip HALF of. I love the first minute of "Had to Phone Ya" but always skip the second minute. I could take or leave Brian's tag but I just HATE the "you you you you you" part so I skip just before it gets to that part.

Hey eric recently Ive found myself hardly listening to any post<love you BBs...just like you I enjoy the entire output but the hit&miss of their music from the mid 70s onward is evident. Brian had gotten so active in 76/7 and then not for the next twenty yrs...

In my opinion the Ricky / Blondie songs are very much underrated. I like Hold on dear Brother and Leaving this town a lot, because they gave a new dimension (and soul !) to the band and the instrumental work is done very good. The chord structure of Leaving this town, especcially the bass line, is very clever. Also Here she comes has a very good groove and one of my favorite drums - the change between double time and half time and the fill in´s, I love it. Nothing against Dennis, but Ricky is by far the better drummer.

Theoretically, I skip all of the Love You album, but once in a while I still put it on the player in a desperate try to understand what makes you all think it's an enjoyable work of genius. But every time it makes me go "Ugh!". :(

HCTN
Good Time
Love is a Woman
ding Dang
Hey Little Tomboy
some of the macho or schlocky DW material.

I won't even go into the eighties or late material where I skip half the songs on a cd.     why are we singing about falsies in a falsetto voice anyway?  that's just to damn weird for my brain to accommodate, even for a Beachboys song.

For the most part, I make my own alternate albums, replacing the tracks I would normally skip with out takes. On the early albums I combine the best on two albums to make one good album. Safari/USA, SG/LDC, SD2/ASL. The rest of the albums are pretty good with a little tweaking.

Is that wrong?

Of course not. I've experimented with fusing Today! and SD/SN into a 14 track album.

Of course most of us make prefered playlists.  I think the gist of the thread is which tracks do you most always skip either listening straight through a disc or in making a playlist.  This would equate to which tracks you really don't like in the BB catalogue.  Tomboys, falsies, and pat her on the butt,  are just embarrasing.  What if someone you didn't know heard you listening to this creepy stuff? :police: :police: :police: :o :o :o

I do it all the time, making CD's for my car. Curiously, my favorite ones are with the later albums. The best ones include Sunflower/Surf's Up, 15 Big Ones/Love You (my personal favorite), and try this trifecta/combination - M.I.U./L.A. Light Album/KTSA.

I don't skip talk tracks, except for "Bull Session...". I just find it boring. Same is I like all of the earlier surf instrumentals, but I can't stand Moon Dawg. Songs, "Be Still", "Ding Dang", "Mona", "When A Man Needs A Woman", "My Diane", "Male Ego".

First of all...this is NOT the 'argument' clinic...or 'abuse' for that matter...so I'm not about to challenge anyone's choices as to their "must to avoid" songs.  I would be forever-the-ass if I invited folks to post the songs they don't particularly like [or worse] and then slammed them for doing so.  Let's just say that there are songs mentioned in this thread which I just LOVE...and I can't imagine for the life of me how anyone, let alone a Beach Boys fan, wouldn't love them too.

Then there's the "real fan doesn't skip over any of the songs" point of view...and it's doubtful that any of us did...at least to start with.  EVERY time there was a new Beach Boys album...without fail...I was truly excited.  I couldn't wait to hear it...and that includes both 'That's Why God Made the Radio' and 'The 50th Anniversary Tour' albums/cds.
[and remember...it all started back in '63 when I bought Surfin Safari, Little Deuce Coupe, Surfer Girl and finally Surfin USA with my paper route money...I got 'em in that order because that was the availability factor at the store]

I think 'real fans' have time constraints...and other things to do/responsibilities.  As such decisions have to be made regarding what should be listened to and how often.  And as several folks said here they make files, cds or load their i-pads [etc] with the songs they like the best...or to create/recreate albums and unique listening experiences.

There may be some who never want to hear another NEW Beach Boys song/release ever again.  Doubtful that there are many of 'those' people here.  We all would beg for and clamor for the opportunity to hear...if not purchase every song mentioned in the thread so far.  And we would marvel at how brilliant and great most of them are...with a couple of exceptions.

There's more to come. :hat

Lately I am on an MIU, LA, KTSA, BB85, SC & SIP kick.  I used to skip MANY songs on these albums but something weird has happened where I am REALLY into these albums and totally enjoying them.
