Title: "We Got Love" studio version finally getting official release!
Post by: Jim V. on December 03, 2014, 08:34:55 PM
So, I was snoopin' around on Acoustic Sounds website since they are doing those SACD Beach Boys releases or whatever. Anyways, when I clicked on Holland, look what I found... (http://store.acousticsounds.com/index.cfm?get=detail&Title_ID=95597)

Our Analogue Productions reissue brings back "We Got Love," a single eliminated from original U.S. copies of the album. Now added as a bonus track!

Kinda cool. I personally don't care all that much about it, but I'm sure there'll be some pretty happy people around here after hearing that.

VERY good spot.

So separate mono and stereo 200gm LPs for each of the releases where applicable plus SACDs; $30 each over 10 albums… looking at heading for $900 dollars (Surfin' Safari mono only so $870) the lot, if you're collecting… and only one bonus track among them? Crivens!

Heck…

Sorry seeing different tales stating 10, 12 or 14 albums…

Does anybody have a lawn that needs cutting? A car that needs washing, maybe?
I don't know how to paint, but I'll pretend like I do if the outside of your house needs a few coats.

Okay 38 products in total… x $30… = $1140.

Guessing these releases will kill the Japanese ones dead in the water … possibly …

There never was a single. But if you remember the Brother discs topic of a while ago (http://smileysmile.net/board/index.php/topic,17621.0.html), you might also remember that the tracklists mentioned "We Got Love (single release)". No clue what was the reason to mention this, as chances were low that it was ever considered.... but the length of the track - 5:50 - makes one wonder if there are different versions. The album version is much shorter.

So I'm definitely buying this one. I'm very curious if this could be that "single" version.

I still don't know why they didn't put the song on the album. Was it hurt feelings over the record wanting another Brian song no matter what? I honestly think "Funky Pretty" would've made a cooler single than "Sail On Sailor" anyway.

Title: Re:
Post by: 37!ws on December 04, 2014, 08:05:11 AM
They didn't put the song on the album because Holland was rejected for not having a potential hit single. I don't know why "We Got Love" was targeted, but it was the decision. I dunno, "Funky Pretty" is just NOT radio-friendly. Not the studio version, at least!

"Funky Pretty" actually got a decent amount of AirPlay on AOR stations for a few months after HOLLAND was released.  At least in the New York market.

You're missing my point. Holland only has 9 songs. There was room for "We Got Love" AND "Sail On Sailor". I don't get why it was an either/or decision.

Not legend - fact. Halfway through the second pass, he announced he was going surfing. Blondie's vocal was recorded over his.

With "Sailor" it clocked in at 36.28. Add "WGL" to that and it's over forty minutes.

Is anything known about how We Got Love was chosen as the song to get the ax? Wonder if the record label, the group, or both were involved in the decision. And is there any documented BB reaction/fallout from that?

If you had to remove one song off the pre-SOS album, We Got Love is it. I like it, but not as much as the other songs and, of course, the very fact it was dropped has added to its popularity in some quarters...

Yeah this is amazing. So We Got Love is going to be included on the LP as well? Holland would've been one of these residues I'd avoided as I have the original, but now with this bonus track I may have to go for it.

Smiley stereo on vinyl also looks fun, plus monos for Today, SDSN and Pet Sounds. Maybe stereos for those too?!! Gulp ... it's looking like an expensive summer next year  :-\

Title: Re: \
Post by: Mikie on December 04, 2014, 10:38:08 AM
Early test pressings of Holland, made in the US and in the UK, feature the album in its original group-intended running order. Side one kicks off with "Steamboat", then the three-part Saga, followed by "We Got Love". The German distributor for Reprise records failed to implement the changed side-one line up correctly and mistakenly pressed 300-400 copies with the earlier running order. Early French and Canadian pressings of Holland still mention "We Got Love" on the sleeve, although the song is not on those albums.

The reason it was left off of Holland musta been because the song was too long. But still, 40 somethin' minutes wasn't that long. Some cite its weak production, but if you listen to a clean copy, it's pretty good. Some say it was worthy of inclusion, some not. I say there was nothing to lose. I could see maybe the reason it was left off if it were a Blondie/Ricky credited track, but Mike was also involved, so that couldn't have been it. 6 1/2 minutes of a somewhat boring song - maybe if it were cut down a few minutes.....

"We Got Love"
 Time 6:32
 Blondie Chaplin/Ricky Fataar/Mike Love

 Are you taken by surprise
 When your fellow man decides
That what you’re doin’ isn’t right
Do you listen, know you’re right

Well, you can keep on tellin’ lies
That keep you deaf from people’s cries
Well, there’s somethin’ you should see
We got love to keep us free

We got love, we got love
We got love and we gonna change our world, that’s right
We got love, we got love
We got love and we gonna change our world, that’s right

I made my home out in the city
Just to see what I could find
Though my heart was in my country
I was not there to close my eyes
Said, I’ve been tired of all the same
Must’ve been a Siren in my head
I’ve been ridin’ all my feelin’s
All this runnin’ and my temperature won’t change

Say, you reap just what you sow
The wise men all have told us so
 Trust those feelin’s deep within
How you must treat your fellow man

 Evolution isn’t strange
 Nature itself demands a change
The universe is on our side
We can’t hold back the comin’ tide

We got love, we got love
We got love and we gonna change our world, that’s right
We got love, we got love
We got love and we gonna change our world, that’s right

I made my home out in the city
Just to see what I could find
Though my heart was in my country
I was not there to close my eyes
Said, I’ve been tired of all the same
Must’ve been a Siren in my head
I’ve been ridin’ all my feelin’s
All this runnin’ and my temperature won’t change

P.S. I'll take "Funky Pretty" over "We Got Love" any day o' the week!   ;D

yes they should have kept it on there, maybe the last song on the first side or something after the California saga before Trader, maybe they were thinking that because they were going to include the fairytale record that it may have been too much to have it on there or something..

I must admit I'm a sucker for alternate track listings. I prefer the European sunflower with cottonfields tacked on the front, so this version of Holland sounds great. I just hope they are including We Got Love on the LP - not just the SACD.

Title: Re: \

If only Analogue Productions would issue Surfs Up with WIBNTLA, we'd have world peace!

Title: Re:
Post by: 37!ws on December 04, 2014, 10:51:18 AM
So according to the track list, the bonus track is "We Got Lot." I put that in the same category as the Caribou CD listing Mike Love in the credits of one song and then adding "Additional lyrics by Mike Love." :)

And for the Pet Sounds DVD (???) they list a "Bonus Tack," which itself is LISTED as a track! (track #14 = 'Bonus Tack,' track #15 = "Hang On To Your Ego")

Either nobody effing proofreads this stuff, or they're actually a...pretty shady outfit...or both.

Title: Re: \
Post by: HeyJude on December 04, 2014, 10:54:12 AM
While I realize that including "We Got Love", a song that has technically been "released" already, is far different from including a trove of outtakes, it's a bummer they couldn't try to expand these SACD reissues with more bonus tracks. Especially since this could theoretically be the last huge push for the catalog in terms of physical media.

Good synopsis, with this caveat: ALL French and Canadian copies mention WGL. Unless you have one that proves the opposite ( I've never seen either w/o it)

It's so Beach Boys to leave it off though, I guess. I still can't imagine Brian insisting on putting all those half-baked covers on 15 Big Ones, and the rest of the group knows he's sitting on "Good Timin'", "California Feelin'", and the heralded "Just An Imitation". Or that instead of doing weird covers of oldies, he could've done weird covers of songs he'd never released, like "We're Together Again" or "Where Is She?". The arguments they must've had...

I don't regard WGL as a Holland track; Holland's a fantastic album as it was eventually presented.

Woulda been great. However, I have to admit that I'm floored that even "We Got Love" is appearing. To be honest, I figured that this was amongst the least likely songs for the guys to ever (re?) release, seeing as there is probably nobody within BRI pushing for Blondie/Ricky material to be released. Although Mike did co-write it, I still assume it was never very high on anybody's priority list. I'm assuming that this is getting a green light just because it's been semi-released before.

Or maybe due to Brian's renewed relationship with Blondie last year and now Ricky. Who knows, but good to see it added to the new Holland release. I preordered my copy this afternoon.

First of all, I am in no way complaining.  Let me say that right out.  But my hopes were that these post 1969 Reprise LPs would be re-issued at some points with bonus tracks.  And there are plenty from the Holland era.  I realize that sort of thing is difficult, with inter-group politics and diminishing record sales but it would be unfortunate if this released made that sort of thing impossible, at least for now.  I'd hate to have to wait until 2023 for a Holland sessions copyright protection release.

I posted the same information over a month ago.

"We Got Love" studio version finally getting official release!l (http://smileysmile.net/board/index.php/topic,19211.msg486847.html#msg486847)

But seeing as that was over a month ago, I guess it must have gotten buried over the past month.

But regardless, this isn't really new news.

It would be good, however, to see when this is finally coming out.

I'm happy this will get a(nother) official release. Blondie and Ricky had great material and I'd love to hear more of it.

BTW this would be another one that would've been a better choice for "Stars&Stripes" than most of what was used.

Blondie and Ricky did a lot for the BB - their songs are super!! And, yes, that pedal steel intro is something else. Also the singing on the bridge (correct term?)("I made my home out in the city..." etc) is heavenly...

Only the Beach Boys could have a single mix stashed away for a song that gets kicked off an album because the album lacks a feasible single!

https://itunes.apple.com/es/album/we-got-love/id1037196829?i=1037199174

Just downloaded it this evening… taken a while but was originally happy to wait for the AP releases… then, I thought, I'm at the inlaws, the kids are in bed, what's a girl to do?!

Boy, I wish I'd done this at the time you posted it!

Like many (and as I've stated here in be past) I've always preferred the live version to the studio version, but listening right now on repeat I'm being seduced. So much in this song to not just like but to love.

Context - have only heard this song on bootlegs previously, and, I think, in JP's Newcastle store decades ago (think I heard both We Got Love and Child of Winter for the very first time in that shop… heaven!). Listening now in iTunes through earbuds… not perfect but several increments higher. On the umpteenth play now and detect the first second of the file seems to be deteriorating…

The rolling piano pre-empts River Song, and in places the song packs a near-similar power. The lead vocal (I'm assuming Blondie) is knock-out, and just goes into delirium in the fade. Some of the backig vocals are stunning - the kind of blanket of warmth that eventually got out into play on the LA album seven years later.

And that first wail of a slide guitar in the first few seconds… gorgeous.

Also some nice-sounding bongos (a phrase I never thought I'd write) and if my ears aren't mistaken a nice bass "yeah" vocal by Mike audible only towards the very end of the fade.

The only thing that mars it is the keyboard work that comes in at the chorus. Stilts it there, though it is perfect for the subsequent bridge ("made my home out in the city…").

Edit to add: actually that organ comes in subtley and effectiely at 0:12 with the slide guitar but gets goofy at 0:58, before getting subdued and gorgeous again.

Still think the live version has the edge - probably - but this studio version is suddenly up there among my favourites from that era.

We Got Love is available now on iTunes and Apple Music. It is 5:55 minutes long, but I'm not sure if it is a remastered version.

https://itunes.apple.com/es/album/we-got-love/id1037196829?i=1037199174

Lovely review, John!  Gagging for it!

As per SmilinEd,  I no longer transact with iTunes, so will have to wait for the AP vinyl or until it appears elsewhere.
