Title: Brian BG on Rockin' The Man In The Boat
Post by: Steve Latshaw on December 03, 2014, 07:06:16 AM
I just listened to this track and I do not hear any BG vocals from Brian on this track.  Am I alone in this?

In all seriousness, does it really matter if Brian's voice is in there somewhere or not? It's a good song on a very touching subject and this, to me, is all that counts.

<<It's a good song on a very touching subject and this, to me, is all that counts.>>

This, for me, may be the finest description of this song I have ever heard.

Is it true that Mike didn't know at the time the meaning of the title??

If it's indeed true, then how many songs did any Beach Boy ever record not knowing what it meant?? We can add "Somewhere Near Japan" to that list!

after a show in 1981 at rupp arena in Lexington, ky me and 3 friends got past security and got to go into the lobby and dining area at the hotel attached to rupp. got to talk to mike and he told me that "rocking the man in the boat" was about female masturbation, with a sly grin on his face. so yes, he knew what the song was about.

Depends on what/who's bush you're talking about.  Present or past tense, whatever you want it to be!

So what's the consensus here about Mike knowing what the title meant?  I say OF COURSE he knew what it meant!  He's from California, ain't he?

Edit: Steve just weighed in and he got it from the horse's mouth, so there you go......

Have you heard? She's back in town
They say the man that she loved was messing around
That didn't please her
So she's starting all over again

She's got the situation well in hand
She's in no hurry for just any man
She ain't worried
She's a real sensation at taking care of what she needs

And she'll be rockin' the man in the boat (rockin' the man in the boat)
Rockin' the man in the boat (rockin' the man)
Humming and strumming the tune that she wrote
'Cause she'll be rockin' the man in the boat

Late at night she's all alone
Turn down the lights and unplug the phone
She's got the feeling
She's gonna start reeling it in

Some nights she's let me know
You know the cat's in the cradle, she's runnin' the show
Higher and higher, up and down and all around
Roller coaster out of control

And she'll be rockin' the man in the boat (rockin' the man in the boat)
Rockin' the man in the boat (rockin' the man)
Humming and strumming the tune that she wrote
'Cause she'll be rockin' the man in the boat

(Feels so good) Just like she knew it would
(Feels so fine) She's finally crossing over the line

I'm watching her day by day
Blow by blow and play by play
Telescope love
How long can I go on this way?

You know I'd love to lend a helping hand
You're such a good singer, let me join in your band
She don't need it, she's her own sensation
She don't need it, got a good vibration
She don't need it, be no imitation at taking care of what she needs

And she'll be rockin' the man in the boat (rockin' the man in the boat)
Rockin' the man in the boat (rockin' the man)
Humming and strumming the tune that she wrote
'Cause she'll be rockin' the man in the boat

Now, now, now, now
And she'll be rockin' the man in the boat (rockin' the man in the boat)
Rockin' the man in the boat (rockin' the man)
Humming and strumming the tune that she wrote
'Cause she'll be rockin' the man in the boat

(Rockin' the man in the boat) Rockin' the man in the boat
(Rockin' the man in the boat) Rockin' the man, yeah
Humming and strumming that tune that she wrote
Well, she'll be rockin' the man in the boat

Suddenly, the Looking Back With Love album became just a little bit more awesome.

I do love how Mike was perfectly okay to knowingly sing lyrics specifically about woman's privates, but the Cabinessence lyrics were in fact the ones that Mike fingered for being unacceptable and in need of explanation. Hilarious. :lol

Because, of course, he's always consistently been concerned with the appropriateness and relatability of lyrics he sings.  ::)

Depends on what/who's bush you're talking about.  Present or past tense, whatever you want it to be!

Yeah, but they just aren't as commonplace as they were a dozen years ago or so!

Custom, you're off topic - this thread is about "Rockin' The Man In The Boat" by Mike Love, not "South American" by Brian Wilson
