Title: Marcia Strassman RIP Post by: guitarfool2002 on October 26, 2014, 08:07:33 PM http://variety.com/2014/tv/news/marcia-strassman-welcome-back-kotter-actress-dies-at-66-1201339759/ (http://variety.com/2014/tv/news/marcia-strassman-welcome-back-kotter-actress-dies-at-66-1201339759/)
(http://pmcvariety.files.wordpress.com/2014/10/marcia-strassman-dead.jpg?w=670&h=377&crop=1) Marcia died of cancer at age 66. For those not familiar with American TV, she is most known for her role on Welcome Back Kotter, a recurring role on MASH, and other 70's TV shows. She was also seen in films like Honey I Shrunk The Kids. But some may ask why post this in the "General Music" section. Those who I've talked with and shared with in the last 10 years or so about the classic Los Angeles radio aircheck recordings will remember a song played by The Real Don Steele on one of his 1967 broadcasts that you've probably remembered me talking about repeatedly. :) Marcia also was a recording artist, and on that great LA upstart label "Uni" from the 60's, among her releases was a single called "The Flower Children", which got some regional airplay and I believe briefly may have cracked the Boss 30 in '67...and it's the record Don Steele played on that Spring '67 aircheck. It's all but forgotten now, but is one of those trippy 1967 LA regional hits that you just never hear. And it's a really obscure footnote to Marcia's career as an actress to the point where her brief recording career around 1967 isn't even mentioned in the obits/announcements I've seen. So for all those fans of obscure 60's Sunset Strip pop/psych forgotten records, here's that single: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1F12o9j73dc (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1F12o9j73dc) RIP Title: Re: Marcia Strassman RIP Post by: guitarfool2002 on October 26, 2014, 08:12:05 PM And here is another really obscure pop/psych Uni single by Marcia, "Self Analysis", written and arranged by Michael Lloyd and produced by Kim Fowley. I'm betting you'll not hear this record too many other places apart from really obsessive 60's music collectors' and historians' 45rpm collections... :)

I like it! It's interesting, right? Not a bad tune, factoring in the pop-psych element and Kim Fowley's involvement. Marcia's brief musical career was an interesting footnote to the 67-68 LA music scene. I don't know how much airplay or sales the records got outside LA, but KHJ was playing "Flower Children" in '67. Title: Re: Marcia Strassman RIP Post by: Aum Bop Diddit on November 13, 2014, 07:59:19 PM I had that tune on some Rhino Flower Power Comp. Anyway, RIP Marcia Strassman. I had a huge crush on her back in the day, she were purty.
I always sensed she couldn't stand Gabe Kaplan for some reason. Title: Re: Marcia Strassman RIP Post by: bgas on November 13, 2014, 08:17:59 PM Hey, You forgot this one! " The Groovy World Of Jack and Jill"

And yes, "Self-Analysis" is a pretty good song, quite a title. I like the bit when it turns minor, around the line "Don't know what's wrong with me?". I like the bit when it turns minor, around the line "Don't know what's wrong with me?". I like that part too. Quite dramatic when it drops to the minor chords. Kim Fowley was involved with some interesting records, eh? Napoleon XIV and The Belfast Gipsies come to mind. And I failed to mention that I had a crush (maybe still do?) on Mrs. Kotter. I'm glad that channel Me-TV is playing re-runs of Welcome Back Kotter. |
