Title: Death of Carl's spiritual main man, John-Roger
Post by: rn57 on October 22, 2014, 08:09:43 AM
At her Facebook page, actress Sally Kirkland, a longtime member of the Movement for Spiritual Inner Awareness founded by Roger D. Hinkins (better known as John-Roger), reports that the latter has just moved on to his next plane of being, ie has died.  He spoke at Carl's memorial and was said to have inspired KTSA's Where I Belong.

So far only the, um, pride of Fleet Street has taken notice of John-Roger's passing in the mainstream media.  The article mentions some of the controversial aspects of his career, and refers to his best-known follower in the music field as "Carol Wilson."

Never heard of him till now. How involved was Carl with this group. Sounds sketchy.

Minor correction: "where I belong" is from the 85 album, not KTSA.

I only saw Carl mention John Roger once, on a PBS late night show in 1983.  I think it was in response to a caller asking if he still practiced TM.

Interesting topic. Isn't there also some 70s footage of the group posing with one Werner Erhard (of EST fame)?

Below, a photo of Carl with John-Roger aka Roger Hinkins, at an awards ceremony sponsored by MSIA, probably sometime in the mid to late '80s.

Carl also visited the White House around 1990 in the company of Sally Kirkland, on behalf of MSIA's work with a charity.  She put up a photo from that occasion on her FB page a while back, which I can't find now - but I remember that Carl's attire was right up to his customary standard of elegance.

Another obit that mentions Carl:

So what you guys are saying is that Sally Kirkland sent me a friend request to drag me into a cult with a snappy acronym?

Thought that name sounded familiar - is this the guy referred to in the WIBN pseudo-biography as Carl's spiritual adviser "John Rogers" ?

From The Daily Wail:

"The controversial group is known for its aversion to garlic, publishing specialist cook-books of garlic free Italian and French recipes for its followers." He might have- allegedly - forced some of his male followers to f***, mind you...
