Title: Creating your own imaginary Beach Boys Anthology Post by: SamMcK on October 19, 2014, 10:29:37 AM Hey guys, long time no see. ;D
Because I have way too much time on my hands sometimes, i've decided to post the track list for my own self indulgent Beach Boys box set. I sort of picture it as the first of two compilations with the second comp focusing on the years 1970-2014 + some solo highlights. I mainly used the good vibrations box set as a guideline but wanted to cram in my favourite tracks from their most acclaimed years. But anyway the main factor for this one is to try and include the vast majority of popular album tracks and singles the band released during the sixties. The aim is more to create a more stable image of a band who could be wildly inconsistent but were still able to produce countless gems including many brilliant singles and one of the greatest albums + lost albums of all time. There are 28 songs on each disc, each of them are split into different periods of the band. Pet Sounds is the most consistent/popular record by the group (not counting the SMiLE sessions) so i've placed the entire album on Disc two. I've also tried to include as many fan favourites as possible including many of the most popular SMiLE tracks using the 2011 release. I can see you put a lot of thought into it, it's the later years that are the hardest to compile I think. :)
Title: Re: Creating your own imaginary Beach Boys Anthology Post by: Dudd on October 19, 2014, 12:08:08 PM Thanks! The later years aren't easy. I'm still not satisfied with disc 5... perhaps some solo cuts should have gone on instead. How'd you tackle it?
Yours is awesome, I really like having the entire Pet Sounds on the second disc. :-D Title: Re: Creating your own imaginary Beach Boys Anthology Post by: SamMcK on October 19, 2014, 12:51:59 PM The post-1977 albums are quite hard for me to digest so I have to admit outside of the more popular tracks i'm not even familiar with a lot of that era. I have a soft spot for anything Carl sings lead on though, so I would have Keepin' The Summer Alive. The problem with a lot of the tracks like that is the production is pretty dull. The Knebworth 1980 version is pretty great though. I also am fond of Somewhere Near Japan and California Calling.
The biggest problem for me is that the dip after 1977 is just too big not counting TWGMTR + Denny and Brian's solo stuff. :-\ Title: Re: Creating your own imaginary Beach Boys Anthology Post by: ontor pertawst on October 19, 2014, 01:33:40 PM I haven't picked out my tracks, but I so picked out the cover:
